I've so much frozen snow on my driveway that I can only exit the garage in my X3, so I've not yet tested the new ****.

Did you have to disconnect your battery when you changed the steering wheel so as not to trip the AirBag light?

I'd recommend to disconnect the battery as I felt it very useful to have the key involved in the install; just to be able to turn the steering wheel when accessing the torx screws on the backside of the wheel.

Yes, disconnect your battery, let it sit for a few minutes, then remove the wheel, its pretty easy...the replace, and reconnect your battery, and make sure you have your radio code if you have th estock radio....
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The **** was pretty straight forward but to get the old 4-spoke steering wheel off took me 2 trips to Sears as my original torx didn't fit in the small wholes on the back side of the wheel and my socket size ended at 21mm whereas you need a 24mm. However, finally I did it. Here is the result (before - after).
just saw your sig and realized you do have the ssk? does the shorter lever length improve the ssk-- ie, even more shorter shift? increased mechanical leverage noticeable?
Yes the wheel was pretty pricy. I was looking a long time on ebay and when I found a wheel, I tried to bid very smart in the last minute but someone bid ever smarter. I was so frustrated as tan 3-spoke wheels are really rare on ebay that I turned around and ordered a new one from Gert.
Yes, I've the B&M SSK. I've so much frozen snow on my driveway that I can only exit the garage in my X3, so I've not yet tested the new ****. However, my "dry shifting" indicated that shifting really gets firmer with the shorter length of the shift ****.
Nice upgrade. I'm about to change out my steering wheel to a Gemballa wheel. Did you have to disconnect your battery when you changed the steering wheel so as not to trip the AirBag light? Please explain your procedure.
Thanks
Norbert

Yes, I did disconnect the battery, I actually disconnected it already the night before and connected it back maybe 2 hours after the install was done. That's the easiest part of the job.
I had my laptop in the car with the great DIY post of "FlatSix911":
DIY steering wheel
I'd recommend to disconnect the battery as I felt it very useful to have the key involved in the install; just to be able to turn the steering wheel when accessing the torx screws on the backside of the wheel.
Another important point is to ensure that the front wheels are absolutely straight when you put the new steering wheel on!
So, now I finally drove my car after 3 weeks abstinence. The new shift **** optimizes the B&M SSK perfectly. Of a total 100% improvement over stock the SSK did 75% and the shift **** 25%. The top of the techart shift **** is just 1/8 inch above the top of the shifter whereas the stock **** seams to be 3/4 inch above the end of the shifter. The shorter leverage helps!
However, if I compare the complete set-up to regular BMW 3-serie shifters, I'd say I'm still 25% away. Nothing beats (at least for me) the feel of a BMW stick shift, especially the ways: 2-3, 4-5 and 5-6 are still pretty long on the 996.
Another point: the techart alu **** might be not everyones taste as it always feels cold; I don't mind.
good write up and interesting point that, no matter how much you improve the 996 shift action, still doesn't add up to bmw's. my zhp's was short, direct, yet buttery smooth. increased resistance noticeable?
