This is not a probability of success.

This is a cheaper option, leaves the plastic bushed factory shifter in place, and is fitted under the car.

Suspected cause
I finally picked up on the pictures that it was the "other" version but was curious if anyone had actually installed it/how it worked.

Suggestion
It seems like there was another part some places are pushing to replace also when you do the SSK, but I can't find it at the moment.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I just picked up a 2001 996 with an awesome short throw shifter. My friend tried it out and now he wants one. Does anyone know how I can figure out which brand my short shifter kit is?
There are at least three known brands, and a few knockoffs.
If you want the best there is......B&M. And yes, we stock it at an everyday low crazy price too.
So I think I'm right in saying that B&M make the Porsche one as well, but make it a different color.
B&M is blue (currently) and I believe that Porsche's version is black?
B&M is just awesome!!!!!!
This may be a dumb question but does the short throw install from under the car or in the interior pulling out the boot. I saw a b&M kit on ebay for relatively cheap and it did not have a shift shaft included and said it installed under the car???????
You are looking at two different items.
The usual B&M (or other) SSK installs from the top, by removing the center console in the car.
The underside version you've seen looks like this:
Just enhances the (cr@ppy) factory shifter with a shorter throw.
This is a cheaper option, leaves the plastic bushed factory shifter in place, and is fitted under the car.
Don't be fooled into thinking this is the B&M SSK that we all rave about.
The normal SSK looks like this:
Definately thanks for the info. I was looking at that short shifter on Ebay that mounts under the car and trying to figure out why it was only $125 from Brandywine. I finally picked up on the pictures that it was the "other" version but was curious if anyone had actually installed it/how it worked. I'll sticked with the tried and true version.
I am pretty sure the undercar one is much harder to install. Plus a friend who has one got stranded when a bolt popped out. Not sure on the brand on his.
On the plus side, the undercar ones are, I believe, adjustable. I would have liked that as I am in the minority here in thinking that both the stock shifter and the SSK are equally crappy. One too long; one too short.
Installing one under the car isn't appealing to me at all. I'd probably take it to my mechanic for that job. Having it adjustable sounds interesting though.
As a whole, I've read so many posts by people with them that I'm curious to try it. The stock does have pretty long throws between gears. But then there always a trade off.
What about the EVO Shift Link? Does this go hand in hand with installing the SSK or is it necessary? It seems like there was another part some places are pushing to replace also when you do the SSK, but I can't find it at the moment.
That replaces a plastic socket with a metal one. Would make a difference if the plastic one developed some play, but the plastic one seems pretty sturdy. I did not change it.
BTW guys, the B& M short shifter is a relatively easy DIY project. The first time you should plan on about 2.5 hours (+/-). Once you go through the entire procedure the first time, you would be able to do a second time it in 1.5 hours MAX. THe toughest part of the whole procedure is getting the shift **** off the OEM shifter, which is the 2nd step in the process.
If you go the DIY route, you have plenty of experienced help here on the Forum!
