My paint guy said it was the primer and prepping that was the key...it had to be primed and sanded a few times or it would come out bad....you may be correct about it being the rear console....i guess i just call them center consoles...I plan to do the same with my "center" console....lol...

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Alrighty, I've done a search and i don't see anyone doing this or maybe the thread was so small that it eluded me...... anyways, has anyone painted there own center console, vents, etc....... ? do you have pics? how hard was it and what kind of problems would i run into.... ? i mean wouldn't it be cheaper since we already have the core, rather then buying one? these things are not cheap, and i figured if we paint them all at once it would save a lot of money..... so i can mod something else with that money.........

POST 2Original post

Are you talking about the one around the vents and temp control screens? I remember someone painted his red against his black interior, looked really good. It was a cab. I've thought of doing mine silver to match the door handles, etc, but am too afraid to mess it up. Concerned about chipping and peeling, or scratches....

POST 3Original post

My body shop painted my center console when I did my facelift....i LOVE it.....I will actually do more when I get the chance.....

POST 4Original post

I was just chatting with Eric at Bumper Plugs about this a bit. Have you checked out his site? It's bumperplugs.com. He's got some good pictures on there and has a core exchange price. I'm planning on do it in a few weeks.

POST 5Original post

Wow, that is nice, newport! Amazing how they get the gloss on a matte plastic surface!? But isn't that called the rear console? I thought the center console was the one vertical around the AC vents? Correct me if I'm wrong please.

POST 6Original post

I think you are talking about my buddy Peter. I forgot his handle on here...but yes he painted his center console RED...to match thecar. And his car is a cab with the Evo front bumper. Very mean lookin!

POST 7Original post

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

well i guess i stand corrected... it's the rear then, but if it's in the front area how is it the rear? anyways, newport that is just too damn nice.... how mcuh did the paint guy charged you and did you end up doing the vents and the other part of your beautiful car as well? oh by the way, could i get the info on your guy that did your rear bumper.... i love what you did to your car..... absolute sex.....

POST 9Original post

Actually, prep and primer are only half of the story. If the chemical process we use is not followed (it is unique), down the road the finish will crack, spider or release from the material and peel off. We've been doing this for over eight years, and the process is a bitch to do right. It takes more material and labor than most shops would use on an entire side panel of a vehicle. Trust me. More pics on the Gallery page of our SITE .

POST 10Original post

Forget the paint.........go CF with a GT3 delete.

POST 11Original post

Yes eric, you are correct, it must be done by someone who knows what they are doing...dont think mine was done with a chemical process. Mine has been in for 2 years and its held up perfectly....My guy is Raj at Culver City Customs, formerly Venice Collison Experts...they also do the bumper conversions...and usually have some bumpers in stock for the conversion...they also do lots of 02+ facelifts as well as widebody conversions and their paint jobs are AMAZING....they do awesome work at a good price...they know Porsche's....[phone removed]...its crazy I know the number by heart....lol...

POST 12Original post

How come it is a 5 speed on the first yellow console picture?

POST 14Original post

Its a Boxster....standard 986 Boxsters came with 5 speeds, 6 speeds were only available in the Boxster S, until the 987....the 6 speed is an option on the base, still standard on the S.....

POST 15Original post

Oooo! Nice!! Is this your car, or a cataloge shot?? Seats look minty fresh!

POST 16Original post

I am currently doing mine as we speak, I will post pics when I am done. The rear console is going to be a PITA. I sanded the "matte" finish of the plastic down until it is smooth (400 grit sandpaper), then applied a black trim paint (made for the exterior so it is very durable). My car is savannah(sp?) beige, I have painted the center console and ashtray/window controls panel. I will be doing the A/C vents, ignition surround, hazard surround and the seat control panels. Trying to decide if I want to do the instrument cluster surround also. It has came out very good so far.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

hey tippy keep us up to date.....love to see how it turns out and how much the cost is... pretty sure it saves a bundle....

POST 18 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

thanks a lot newport.... appreciate it...

POST 19Original post

Yes it is mine, I fortunately bought the car this way!

POST 20Original post

yUmmm...that GT Silver and Cocoa Leather looks awesome!!!

POST 21Original post

This look very nice, so now i realy want a blackpainted centerconsole ...on bumperplugs web they say the car must from 00 and up ,isnt this mod possible to do on a 98-99 car? is there any other shop that i can buy this painted and ready ?

POST 22Original post

To my knowledge the consoles should be the same....I just bought an extra console on ebay as mine was scratched then I mentioned to my paint guy who was doing my 02+ facelift that I had one and was thinking about painting it...he said bring it in...so I did and he took care of me....

POST 23Original post

anyone have a picture of a dark colored console (a la basalt black) with graphite grey interior?

POST 24Original post

I bought some extra parts on Ebay and tried it myself. It was difficult to do, the paint and prep is expensive, and I didn't do a very good job. I ended up not putting any of the stuff in my car, so it collects dust in the basement. I wish I had gotten Eric to do it, and I may still. I did most of the interior parts so I wound up spending as much as I would have with Eric I'm sure. I repainted this lower console 4 times. I finally got the shine I was after, but there is a run on the top right side that I just couldn't live with.

POST 25 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

well from the pic i can't see what 's wrong with it.......

POST 26Original post

So how does porsche do it from the factory? is the plastic colored?

POST 27Original post

It's not a good picture, but you wouldn't want it in your car. After seeing that black one in this thread, I think I would rather have that than Arctic Silver. I didn't think it would look good to do body color on a black car until I saw that picture. Not sure about the upper console or other trim pieces, but the lower one looks pretty sweet. I have a ton of interior parts to practice with or ship them off to Eric

POST 29Original post

There is a covering that sand paper just eats right off. I have no idea what the covering is. It's actually easier to paint one of the old Boxster charcoal gray consoles than the newer ones with soft touch feel.

POST 30 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

if i get the boxster one... how much prepping is needed?
