Reported cause
The GT-2 has the exact same engine as the 996TT with X-50 package, the extra 15-20hp that the GT2 has over the X-50TT is due to the fact that they removed the AWD system wich reduces mechanical drag and frees up some HP..
Leading evidence: 'fact' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'fact' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Run more boost' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Suggestion
The engine does have upgraded K24 turbo running more boost, but also different manifolds and intercoolers.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hi folks,
I was just wondering, what is the difference between the GT2 and the Turbo? Both have blowers, right? Is it RWD vs AWD ? or more?
Then apart from the NA vs blowers, what the difference between the GT2 and GT3?
And no, I don't have any $$$ for them, but just curious to learn more about the cars.
Also what about the engine block/design in them? All same?
Thanks
Sid
both based on the porsche GT1 block.
996TT is AWD while the 996GT2 is RWD
GT2 has K24 Turbos, 996TT has K16's GT2 runs higher boost (the exception is the 996TT with X50 power package which gives the turbo some more power and the GT2's turbos).
GT2 is lighter more track oriented and has a different bodykit.
Turbos had optional PCCB's (ceramic brakes) and GT2 i believe came with them standard
there's a bunch more smaller differences but the key thing to remember on the GT2 over the turbo is: lighter, more powerful, rear wheel drive, different bodykit (aerodynamics), and very...very....very..........VERY FAST
correct me if i'm wrong on some of this.
If I had to rate the following porsches, (996 or 997 based, take your pick)
GT1, GT2, GT3, Carrera GT, Twin-Turbo
How would you sort them in terms of the fastest car to slowest car ? I'm guessing the track-only GT1 would be the fastest, but not sure ...
All stock... regardless of 996/997 variants they would stack up like this
GT1, Carrera GT, GT2, Twin-Turbo, GT3
the GT3 and the TT i hear are very close in a drag stock from what I hear...with the TT pulling ahead once you pass a certain speed.
GT2's and GT3's (996 versions) Do not have Sunroofs, PASM, or traction control.
In a straigt line race between a stock GT3 and a stock TT, it is definately a drivers race, on the track the GT3 shines. The 996 GT2 is the fastest production 911 made.
The GT-2 has the exact same engine as the 996TT with X-50 package, the extra 15-20hp that the GT2 has over the X-50TT is due to the fact that they removed the AWD system wich reduces mechanical drag and frees up some HP.. the car is also a bit lighter (no back seats, less luxury, etc) the GT-2 is a very fast car..
I don't think this is right. We are talking flywheel HP, not HP to the wheels. Once you depress the clutch the AWD system is irrelevant. There must be something else. Different boost levels perhaps?
thats the same I believed until a sales person from a Pcar dealer convinced me. He said that is just a marketing thing, the cars have the same flywheel HP but the GT2 feels faster because it is lighter and has less drag so Porsche feels free to ad more hp...

saleman's pitch
as accurate as to their being no differences between a 996 Turbo engine and a 996 GT2 engine?
From Porsche PET Catalogue:
Porsche lists the 996 Turbo at 309kw.
Porsche lists the 2001-2004 996 GT2 at 340kw.
Porsche lists the 2005 996 GT2 at 360kw.
As far as I know, the PET Catalogue is not a publication of the marketing department.
Also, Porsche lists different part numbers for replacement engines for each version, including the Turbo X50. (in other words, the Turbo X50 replacement engine is a different part number than the GT2 engine replacement. Porsche even has a M code (M101) for "Engine Parts 996 GT2".
996 Turbo is M96.70
996 Turbo X50 is M96.70E X50
996 GT2 is M96.70S M101
The GT2 has more hp than a X50 Turbo. The cars might share Turbos and intercoolers, but the GT2's extra hp has nothing to do with weather its 2wd or AWD. The driveline loss is completely irrelevant to hp coming out of the engine. Porsche salespeople are oftentimes the least informed when it comes to these cars.
You guys might be right, I am just saying what the salesguy told me, he owns 2 911's and he raced 944's for a while, he seemed knowledgeable. He made it sound like it was a marketing thing, the part number is irrelevant, they can call their parts differently but still be the same as any other part. I agree 100% that an AWD car will not lose BHP, but it will definitely lose WHP. He basically said that the GT-2 is a TT X50 without the AWD, better suspension, less luxury,etc.... but who knows he migh be wrong
M.E.,
This salesman was most likely speaking in generalities, simplifying the description of the GT2 into what he probably felt were terms you would readily identify and understand.
I'll bet if you called him and asked him if the GT2 has different pistons and cylinders, different tranny, different gas tank and fuel pump, different oil pumps, different mufflers, different intercoolers, different clutch and pressure plate, no electronic traction aids, GT3 related suspension, etc, etc, etc., he might say, "Well, yes, actually it does".
but the GT2 has more hp than the TT x50....so how can it be the same? If that was the case then everyone would buy x50 TT's, and remove the front driveline....and save like 60k....
GT3's do have sunroofs, in fact they are standard in the US. Please don't discuss this on the GT3 board. There are a lot of people who feel they should not. There are many arguement posts over this.
The GT2 does not have a sunroof. The GT2 also lacks much of the standard equipement of a regular turbo including rears seats and bose or hi-fi stereos. Yes, the GT2 is RWD instead of 4WD like the regular turbo, but it has a beefed up gearbox with a limited slip. The engine does have upgraded K24 turbo running more boost, but also different manifolds and intercoolers. The X50 upgrade for the regular turbo includes the larger K24 turbos and manifolds, but not the intercoolers.
The suspension is far upgraded from the regular. The threaded coilovers are the stiffest suspension to come from the factory, 30% stiffer than the GT3. It does have adjustable sway bars like the GT3, but also solid metal bushings. Wheels were hollow spoke turbo twist wheels (02') or GT3-style (03-04') that are 8.5" with with 235 tires in front and 12.0" with 315 tires out back.
Last, the GT2 was the first Porsche with PCCBs standard. The brakes, that were later an option on the turbo, have 13.8" discs with 6-piston calipers up front and 13.0" 4-piston rears
Go back and read my post again. It says GT3's (996 Versions) like the one I own did not come to the states with sunroofs.
X50TT and GT2 intercoolers are the same.
He also might have been saying that to SELL you a TT, knowing you probably woul not buy a GT2....He tells you, "To be honest, a TT with X50 is the same as a GT2, so thats the one to buy....."...I take what salespeople tell me with a grain of salt because there is always a motive.....
LOL ! I'm not buying a new Porsche anytime soon - I've already got more car (996 C2) to keep me VERY happy. I was really curious to understand the GT1,GT2, GT3, GT lineage and the competitions they participate in.
Come to think of it - this is a very good discussion
