Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Regarding this thread, my PO replaced the engine at 105k miles, because, he told me, he got tired of replacing RMSs nearly every year.

Suggestion
Obviously not chump change, but it's only 2x what it costs to change timing belts on a 944 turbo - and you have to do that every 35k miles (or else the belt will break and you're replacing bent valves).
Leading evidence: 'Replace engine at 105k miles' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm at 70,500 and about to go out of warranty.
Since there is no way that I can afford an engine replacement anytime soon, all these IMS failure threads have me debating my next move.
I need to balance out this fear with some positive numbers!!!
There is a high milage role call on renntech
Seeing the first couple posts I figure you can make it the rest of the week at least
114.5k (miles)
Smooth as silk small oil leak less than a teaspoon/month - this better not turn into a curse thread
I'm pretty sure it's Macster. I don't want to spoil his fun in posting his bad-*** millage on the M96 in his Boxter, but I will say it's 2 something.
Macster, blow the doors off this joint!!
(I'm 'only' at 52k)
We need to adjust all milages by the average percentage the speedometer is off calculating in the average speed and all. Oh wait a minute. That'l make mine less....never mind
thats a good point - we have raised that before and many will state the odometer is NOT off despite the spedo being off...... I have found that to be true though and I am thinking of rolling my odo back about 50k to be on the safe side
Tell me about it! My 08 CS lasted just 25 days before destroyed when some butthead driver on cell phone slammed into the car.
Totaled. Didn't even have plates yet.
Sincerely,
Macster.
02 Boxster 2.7l 5-speed. 227.6K miles. Original engine. Original clutch. Had to replace brake light and clutch interlock switches. They wore out.
Driver's side floor mat has big hole in it. Don't make floor mats like they used to. I was hoping for 500K miles out of mine!
Change that oil early and often people.
Then drive the car. Who you saving the miles for?
(Added 17K to my 03 Turbo since I bought it last June.)
Oh, there are other high mileage Boxsters. Some at or over 150K miles.
I know of one 996 Turbo owner who has over 250K miles on his car.
Sincerely,
Macster.
a guy at my cigar club remarked to me last week, "you drive that carrera in the winter?!".
my response was, "well, i'm not going to keep it nice for the next guy. i'm driving it until the wheels fall off."
Thanks all.
Seems like most of the "high mileagers" are right around me. That was my fear
I was hoping to see an onslaught of 150k cars, but I keep forgetting these aren't built like 930s.
99.5k
Strongly believe in - drive it as often as possible, frequent oil changes, take the 6 mile route to the 1 mile destination (warm the oil).
[when I was shopping, there were cars with 150k+, with original engines- the interior was what reflected the miles]
And here I thought the reason you didn't mount the wing was cause it wouldn't fit, Ed. Doh!!
Lol!
Maybe I'll mount your GT2 wing on top of my GT3 wing. That's make it faster, right? GT5!!!!
well, if a 996 was introduced in the u.s. in 1999, then we're coming up on 11 years of the model. to get 150K miles + for mileage, then the owner(s) would have been driving the car 15k miles+ per year. that's more annual miles than most leases currently allow and, as we know, p-cars are not used as daily driver for the most part.
so seeing 150k+ miles in a 1999 996 would be pretty unusual, imho.
I bet the odometer is accurate... the car knows how much the speedometer is off. You can monitor speed via the climate control hack (mk1s) and see "true speed" vs "indicated speed" - so the car
does
know... I guess the question is: does it want to tell us?
Regarding this thread, my PO replaced the engine at 105k miles, because, he told me, he got tired of replacing RMSs nearly every year. I think he went through 6 or 7.
Personally, I think that all the people that are getting paranoid about their IMS bearings as their cars age/mileage increases should look into the LN Engineering/Jake Raby bearing replacement. Wasn't it something like $1000? Obviously not chump change, but it's only 2x what it costs to change timing belts on a 944 turbo - and you have to do that every 35k miles (or else the belt will break and you're replacing bent valves).
Just my 2 cents.
I dont get this statement - it looks like the high milers are 30-40k above where you are???? at 10K/year thats 3-4 years.......and most likely your car is seeing about 7k/year which means you are 5-6 years away from the 110k mark?????
What's most surprising is that yours was a Tip. I thought they were immune to the issues plaguing the manual vehicles.
Mine has 82k miles on it. It's a 2002 daily driver (whenever I'm not traveling for work)
996 has same IMS & bearing - which is the big issue - regardless of manual or Tip.
It's the TTs & GT3s which have a non-M96 engine and avoid this issue.
111,000 Miles on my Daily-Driver 2000 C4 Aero w/ Manual trans.
I bought this 996 almost a year ago in Feb. 2009 w/ 72,000 miles...so in one year I've almost put 40K on this car. No issues other than a new AOS, tires, brake pads/rotors and one leaky spark-plug tube.
She's going the distance...
Interesting points.
I guess I'm just used to seeing pcars used as daily drivers around here (weather) and threw a number out there that sounded about right. 11 years x 12k / year -> 130k-ish.
The average from the numbers that have been posted is about 98k.
And I meant I was fearful after seeing many owners in the 70k-80k range.
A good friend of mine recently had the motor in his 02 C2 (6-Speed) tear up at 71k.
But hopefully all will be fine.
