Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

You must make sure the cables are adjusted correctly to avoid harshness.
Leading evidence: 'Adjust correctly' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'best mod i've ever done' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Adjust correctly' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I hated the stock porsche shift ball and replaced with a Techart Alum Ball.

Completely transforms the feel of the 996 - probably the best mod I've ever done to any car.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

We had an SSK party on Saturday at my Porsche buddy John's place in OC.
Finally got my Christmas gift B&M SSK installed - wooooooo hooooooo!
Thanks Eric Bumper Plug Guy.
Easy project, results are just stunning.

If you don't have one yet - BUY ONE!
cdodkin,
I keep hearing that over and over again. I was planning to do it to the new car when I get it. Curious, though - does it make it harder to push into gear? The concern on the 996TT forum is that it actually slows you down because of the extra effort you have to make in order to push the shifter into gear. Is it just a case of improper adjustment/installation they're experiencing?
Cheers,
Justin
Well mine's firm but not hard
So it's actually no harder to get into gear - but it has lost all the sloppiness and play that the factory shift has.
You can't believe how precise it feels until you've made the change - but when you see the plastic bushings and parts on the original shifter, and compare with the beautifully engineered parts on the B&M (or Porsche branded B&M) you understand that this was the way it should have been built at the factory.
I know it's psychological, but the whole car felt tighter after the swap on Saturday - even with the slight re-learning curve in shifting, the benefits can be appreciated instantly.
did I sell it enough?
Oh, and my wife has the B&M in her Boxster too - she's happy with the firmness!
I must be in a small minority. While the stock shifter is way too long, I find the SSK to be way too short. It really doesn't speed up shifting and is harder to use. I guess I just don't get it.
I prefer the SSK to stock, especially on the track. That said, it's not the no-brainer mod that the SSK for my B5 S4 was. In my case, that was the best mod I've ever done for any car.
Someone suggested putting the 997 shifter in the 996. That might be the perfect answer (for me).
I had mine changed about two weeks ago. The slop from the original shifter is gone and the shifts feel more precise. It does take some time to get used to but overall, it feels more like a sports car now.
I have had mine for about a month thanks to installation assistance from Mr Orton. It really helps make the car feel more like a true sports car. You must make sure the cables are adjusted correctly to avoid harshness. It also is a little harder to shift when cold out, but once the car warms up...it is good to go. I hated the stock porsche shift ball and replaced with a Techart Alum Ball. Once I had this sorted out to fit correctly with shims and correct length set screws it is perfect. This sits lower than the stock unit and really adds to the toggle Switch feel that this SSK is designed for. So far the best aftermkt addition for my 996.
i had the OEM SSK installed after one short week of ownership-- i couldn't take the sloppiness and vagueness anymore (kinda surprising, in fact). But, as others have said, pretty much transforms the car and imo is necessary to really enjoy the car. dunno if true, but my dealer told me that all 997's come with equivalent of 996 oem ssk (length of throws/action), and that the 997 oem is even shorter. definite a must mod.
