Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Suggestion

A quarter of the oil stays in when you change it (8-9 of the 12 total liters), so if you change viscosities, you are mixing oils.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

My C4S is a little low on oil...they put in 15W-50 at the dealer last time I got the oil changed. I have some 0W-40 in my garage...ok to add?

POST 4Original post

Are you sure? I was pretty certain you were not supposed to mix viscosities. I could be completely misinformed/under the wrong impression.

POST 5Original post

No problem what so ever - go ahead and top off.

POST 7Original post

Oil? Did someone say oil? IT'S POPCORN TIME, KIDS!

POST 8Original post

Always been my understanding that mixing viscosities was OK. Also understand that if you inadvertently mix conventional with synthetic, it won't cause damage either, although I'd sure be careful not to do it.

POST 9Original post

Also, I think I read somewhere not to mix different brands. Viscosities ok to mix within brands for topping off. But yes, gota911, oil means it's popcorn time!!

POST 10Original post

Confucus says: If a drop of 15w50 mixes with 0w40 in the crankcase and nobody was around, would you hear it?

POST 11Original post

A quarter of the oil stays in when you change it (8-9 of the 12 total liters), so if you change viscosities, you are mixing oils.

POST 12Original post

You shouldn't mix viscosities and brands as a general rule. It will not cause any damage or concern whatsoever, however, so don't worry about it.

POST 13Original post

I just added 3/4 quart of 15/50 to my 0/40. guess I'm just rebellious

POST 14Original post

15/50 + 0/40 is it 7.5/45? or did i miss something?

POST 15Original post

Now hold on there Cowboy...only 8 posts so this IS your first rodeo Don't just come round here posting oil Bulls... unless you got lots of that there darn PCorn ...ya hear

POST 16Original post

You need to get the common denominator first...which is 200.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Ok. I get it. I guess oil is not a good thing to bring up around here. Thanks for the reassurance that mixing is ok, though. While we're on this subject of "mixing", I have a more serious question: Is it safe to mix whole milk with skim milk, or does that viscosity combination really cause the Oreo to explode upon dunking? I heard Richard Pryor burned himself up that way.
