Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Every morning when I start the car - anytime it's cold - my engine compartment fan comes on and stays on until the engine starts to warm up a little. Isn't it supposed to be the other way around? It doesn't come on when it's warm, and I've certainly done a lot of spirited driving. How do I check if it's hooked up properly?

POST 2Original post

What you hear is probably the secondary air blower which should start and run for about 1 - 2 minutes depending on how cold it is.

POST 3Original post

Agreed - this pumps additional O2 into your exhaust system to try and give you cleaner cold-start burn, with lower emissions. On other vehicles, such as my Landrover Discovery, the secondary blower sounds like a damn Dyson vacuum as it runs for those initial minutes on a cold day! The Porsche one is pretty tame by comparison.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Interesting - I had no idea. I thought it was a wacky engine compartment fan - thanks!
