Suggestion

It's actually running into the headlight receptacle, but you can snag it and pull it out so that the wire loop at the end can be grasped.....then pull on it and the front trunk lid will pop up.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

right front fender, seen when you pull the headlight cluster out. It has an eyelet ring so that you can pull on it. I did not want to pull on it and have the engine drop on me or something. Thought I ask the experts first. I was changing the city light bulb in the headlamp cluster and once removed (headlight), you can see that galvanized looking cable coming from the front. I thought perhaps it was to open the gas tank flap, but the manual says the pull cord is on the right front door frame once the door is opened. Just very curious. BTW its an '01 996 coupe (w/ PSE-best money spent)

POST 2Original post

I believe that is the cable which unlatches the front hood. Useful if your battery every dies...

POST 4Original post

Hmm....I haven't seen that one but don't you have to open the hood anyway to get the headlight cluster out? That seems kinda pointless. Is the pull ring accessible from somewhere else without removing the lights?

POST 6Original post

Wait until you find out where the emergency release for the engine compartment lid is....

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

How do you get access to it if you have to remove the headlight and before that, you have to open the front hood? Doesn't make sence

POST 10Original post

You have to hook it with a thin wire; it's not supposed to be easy to get at.

POST 13Original post

The engine emergency cable release is in under the left taillight. It also must be snagged from underneath to open the engine compartment. The fuel filler door emergency release is in the front of the passenger door opening. The front cable release is not supposed to be easy to get at.

POST 14Original post

Do you guys have any tips on how exactly to get at this from the wheel well? I went down to my garage to put in my new Optima, and discovered that my car had been broken into (attempted). The passenger side window was all torqued, and now I have a couple of nice creases in the door frame. Needless to say I wasn't real happy. Anyway, I got bored waiting for the cops to file my police report, so went about replacing my battery. The problem is, I guess in my state of mind this wasn't a great idea because I closed my hood with no battery in the car. I really need to get in so I can at least get my car alarmed and locked again. Can someone give me quick instructions? What do I need to do, remove the passenger or drivers side wheel well and then what? Thanks all

POST 15Original post

Take the left front wheel off. Pull of the 3 or 4 plastic fasteners holding on the wheel well liner. Find the emergency release cable under headlight assembly. Pull the cable sideways to trip the latch.

POST 16Original post

EVEN EASIER. GET YOUR NEW BATTERY GET SOME JUMPER CABLES OPEN YOUR FUSE BOX PULL THE RED TAB WITH THE GOLD BAND OUT PUT THE RED CABLE TO THE TAB PUT THE BLACK CABLE TO THE DOOR HINGE PUSH THE FRONT TRUNK RELEASE BUTTON. DONT TRY TO START THE CAR THAT WAY YOU WILL BLOW 20 FUSES BUT YOU CAN POWER THE FRONT LATCH THAT WAY DO IT QUICK AS YOU CAN INCASE YOU LEFT THE + LEAD TOUCHING SOMEHTING UNDER HOOD

POST 17Original post

Thanks for all the help guys. Got some wire, hooked it up to my fuse box, the battery, and the door latch and BINGO, open door. Works even without a battery in it, and I didn't need a radio code either. Cool. Now time to catch those damn theives...

POST 18Original post

For future reference.....my cable broke (99 996 is a mechanical release, not electronic) and I ended up taking off BOTH wheels chasing down that elusive cable. It's in the PASSENGER side headlight, but you can see it if you take off the right front wheel, take out the plastic keepers in the wheel well lining, and peel back the lining. Look up at the headlight...over on the left side of it at the back...and you'll see a silver braided cable. With a flashlight, the cable is easy to spot. It's actually running into the headlight receptacle, but you can snag it and pull it out so that the wire loop at the end can be grasped.....then pull on it and the front trunk lid will pop up. I rerouted mine to come out the front in the area of the right front radiator...then attached a zip tie to it and stuffed the cable back under the rubber lining. Only the black zip tie hangs down...doesn't attract attention...all you have to do is pull the zip tie, the cable drops down and you don't have to disassemble your wheel well.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
