Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Its not so bad....
DETROIT Toyota Motor issued its second large recall in two months on Thursday to fix a problem with accelerator pedals that can get stuck, causing vehicles to speed up unintentionally.
Toyota said that it did not yet have a solution but in the meantime instructed drivers who experience a stuck pedal to brake with firm and steady pressure. The recall covers 2.3 million cars and trucks from model years 2005 through 2010 and is separate from a November recall of 4.2 million vehicles that was the largest in Toyotas history. About 1.7 million vehicles are included in both recalls, including its best-selling model, the Camry........

I know someone who experienced this issue in a Lexus IS-350 sedan. Even firm, steady braking wouldn't stop the car. The push button ignition button wouldn't shut off the engine. They finally threw the car into "Park" when it hit almost 90 m.p.h. on the highway. That stopped it, and it was eventually replaced by Lexus.

and LOL - if you ever drove one you would understand, they are completely disconnected from the road and make you feel like vomiting from the body roll... most of the drivers are on the verge of throwing up !!
Good one, Ed.
If I owned a VW dealer, I'd line up outside the Toyota dealers with some new VW TDIs as a free loaner car.
But seriously Toyota has some issues, technical and PR.
For example, if you're driving the car and want to turn it off you have to hold the goofy "Start button" for like 5 or 10 seconds.
Think about that CHP officer and his family last year....
I think Toyota's reliability has slipped as of late, quality declining as a company grows is not unheard of in most ventures...
There's virtually no car made in which the engine is capable of completely over powering the braking system, I would not believe a 2nd hand story about a car being thrown into park at 90mph. Neutral would've been the smarter move there, by the way. In that hypothetical scenario however, you'd either lock the driven tires, or more likely break the locking pin, and the car would continue on after some jolts in the drivetrain for a second or two.
I think we also have to make some allowances for what gets reported and what does not. At 15 million units a year, Toyota is the planet's biggest carmaker. Moreover, it's Japanese, at a time when domestic makers are in pretty dire straits. I'll grant you that the number of cars affected here is huge, but the fact is that there are countless recalls and service actions active for every car maker you can imagine, every year. What made this a story was that it was Toyota, just like what made the philandering golfer episode a story was that it was Tiger Woods.
no one's IMS caused anyone to speed out of control and kill someone ala' Audi 5000s
years later the Audi issue turned out to be likely caused by the position of the gas pedal in relationship to the driver's body centerline - it's tough to know for sure but making a product of SO many people who basicaly go thru life in "DUH" mode has to be a challenge.
lowest common denomenator theory
You have to admire Toyota for manning up. The brake comment is lame but this is what you want to hear:
"Hanson added that all of the vehicles involved in the latest recall contain a gas pedal system that comes from a single supplier. He declined to identify the supplier or say whether Toyota would continue doing business with the supplier.
"Responsibility for this in the end is ours," he said."
I own an 06 Tacoma in part because of their attitude toward their customers. Few if any other car companies would do this either:

Agreed. And thus the nanny state.
What killed those people was panic. No car made can overcome its own brakes from a standing start. Typical passenger car brakes have equivalent horsepower that's multiples of an engine's, commonly four figures.
What hurt Audi in all of that wasn't an engineering failure so much as it was their own arrogance. They were very foolishly dismissive about the whole thing, directly blaming drivers. Not how you play the PR game. They handled the 'flying TT' situation much more deftly.
