Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Just about any used car on the lot can be "certified"....it must have under 50k miles on it though...
Leading evidence: 'Use car' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Check rep of the builder, i wouldnt touch a rebuilt' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Unless they can tell you who rebuilt the engine and you can check the rep of the builder, I wouldnt touch a rebuilt.

If they had problems, they way you go is to replace the entire engine.

Then you are not only getting old design, but used....now if its a Porsche remanufactured engine, then yes it will have all the updates and would be more desireable.

There is a HUGE difference.....996 engines have not been able to be rebuilt until recently because Porsche has not sold the internal parts to anyone...so unless its been recently rebuilt, no one knows what kinds of parts were used....was it rebuilt with used parts from another bad engine 996?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Most of the 99s with aero that I can find in the price range I'm looking for are in the 60-80k range for mileage. Should this sort of mileage bother me as long as it passes a good PPI?
Also anything to be aware of to look at with cars that have recently rebuilt engines? There seem to be a lot in the 60-80k range that say they have "recently rebuilt engines!". That sounds scary on one hand, and good on another hand.
So many things to research. ...
Thanks
100k original miles running strong - no drips or leaks and burns zero oil. Just get a well maintained car and don't worry about mileage so much as how it was cared for.
or do like i am doing, buy the best 996 you can. I want a 40,000-50,000 mile car with full leather, 6 speed, and in a decent color. I will pay just ounder $30,000. Then buy the Aero kit from Porsche for $4300, have it shipped and painted for another $700ish and then i have a low mile car looking the way i want. Most aero cars have wheels other then the sport design wheels. It seems if they have Turbo twists you can sell those on Ebay and buy the sport design ones and nearly come out a wash.
Good luck
BTW there was a really nice 80,000 mile ocean blue Aero 996 on traderonline.com the other day. Its in the $30,000 range, the price was $29,900 I think.
Let me ask the buyers here -
Where are you guys looking? I'm selling and went ahead and put my car (2000, CPO) on CL. I'm trying to avoid eBay, but maybe I'll crack down and do it. The big thing I was looking at doing was Autotrader, and now that I'm really getting very serious about selling, I may just drop the $70 and do it. Is there somewhere else I'm forgetting? I found my car through Panorama, but I'd like to sell in early Feb. and magazines obviously need some lead time...
Cheers,
Justin
Have you looked at the Porsche dealers? I would NOT buy a 99 without a PORSCHE warranty.....I bought an absolutely stunning 99 C4 Cab with 45k miles on it...at 60k the engine went...it had another 15k worth of repairs on top of that....its now at 123k miles and runs perfectly...but if I didnt get the CPO warranty, it would have cost me 30k...I got it for under blue book as well so I didnt pay a premium.
Well it must be a Porsche dealer, this is a Porsche warranty....maybe the dealer was not able to certify ANY cars....in my case, the certification was an easy issue and a negotiation....I found the car, then negotiated price...there was a price with CPO and a price without....I got them to basically GIVE me the warranty...got it below the price without, WITH warranty.....
Should I give any weighting advantage to used with rebuilt engines?
They have newer engine parts and an engine that has been looked at relatively recently...but an engine that had something go wrong obviously.
Newport996, I take it you must buy the porsche with them then? Chances are I'll be buying a porsche in the states and bringing it back into Canada (gobs cheaper). I imagine my local dealer won't be too friendly towards me once they find that out.
rebuilt? or remanufactured? There is a HUGE difference.....996 engines have not been able to be rebuilt until recently because Porsche has not sold the internal parts to anyone...so unless its been recently rebuilt, no one knows what kinds of parts were used....was it rebuilt with used parts from another bad engine 996? Where the parts simply fixed and the engine rebuilt? A rebuilt engine is only as good as the parts used and the engine builder, and buying a car from a lot, you dont know either....Its a risk in my opinion because you dont know if it has new and updated parts, or if they found another motor that had a differet failure, and used it for parts. Then you are not only getting old design, but used....now if its a Porsche remanufactured engine, then yes it will have all the updates and would be more desireable. Unless they can tell you who rebuilt the engine and you can check the rep of the builder, I wouldnt touch a rebuilt.
As far as I know, at least here in the states any Porsche dealer will honor the warranty.....now if that works for a car bought in the US, and serviced in canada...not sure....but I would simply ask....Call your local dealer...say you are about to move to the area from the US and wanna know if your CPO warranty is valid in Canada....will they honor it....They should...it is PCNA, NA meaning North America...Your warranty is with PCNA and the dealer gets payed to from them to fix your car....so your dealer makes money when they repair in under CPO. They should be happy to see you and happy to fix it and send a bill to PCNA.
Yeah i wouldnt touch a rebuilt M96 engine. If they had problems, they way you go is to replace the entire engine. Porsche discouted these cause they made quite a few extra engines with the reported problems f the first ones.
I would pay less for an engine that was rebuilt then one with an original. Unless the rebuild was from someone like autofarm or someplace that was well reccomended and was very clear about what was and wasnt done for the rebuild.
