Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Reported cause
Talked to the tech and he stated that it was the bolts that connect the trans to the shaft.
Leading evidence: 'bolts' (1 discussions report identifying this cause; no attributable repair resolution). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'bolts' (1 discussions; 1 report identifying it and 0 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Check intermediate shaft seal' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I was not very involved with the repair...generally over it - (just make it work!), tow truck picked it up and I retrieved it later the next day at the dealer with out any more of an explanation that it was the shifter cable that broke.

They cleaned the bottom of the bell housing, added some dye to the oil and asked me to drive it for 300 miles or so.

Being that the RMS was replaced weeks before and they removed the bolts when the trans was out.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I took my '00 C2 Coupe into the shop today to remove a screw in my tyre. While the car was on the lift I noticed a slight oil deposit underneath and the mechanic said that it is the RMS. I don't have a spot on the driveway as yet.
The first RMS was replaced at 48K miles, the next at 55K miles and now the car just turned 61K. It is horrifying that my car needs a new seal every 5K miles ... I just don't expect that from Porsche. What should I do? Should I ask the dealer to try replacing the seal again (it is under warranty)? Or should I demand a more thorough investigation? I don't see how the dealer will give a 2 year warranty if they can't fix it for sure this time ...
I had three RMS's replaced in the first 8 mos. of ownership as well, (new car). I was told: "that's what a warranty is for". Later I would be glad that it was not my shifter cable three times...that leaves you on the side of the road.
how often is the car driven? stored cars often have rms.
i think you get a new engine after 3 or is it on the 3rd fix? have the alignment checked out. if it's out of spec, it's automatically new engine time.
Did they show you the cable???
I had the service mgt tell me the same thing after stranded on the side off the road. Twice. 100 miles away each time.
Talked to the tech and he stated that it was the bolts that connect the trans to the shaft.
It seems that the mgt was helping out the tech by not stating the correct problem. If he had the tech would not have been paid. Being that the RMS was replaced weeks before and they removed the bolts when the trans was out.
Both prior RMS (and the Intermediate shaft seal, cam cover leaks, etc) have been done at Stevens Creek Porsche.
Today, I took it to CT Automotive in Campbell to get a screw out of my tyre ... and that's when we noticed the leak (when the car was on the lift)
I was not very involved with the repair...generally over it - (just make it work!), tow truck picked it up and I retrieved it later the next day at the dealer with out any more of an explanation that it was the shifter cable that broke. I did have the car in to the dealer about 8k miles earlier for the "R&R shift cable bracket recal W557". I don't have enough of an understanding of the issue to know if they are related.
My last RMS replacement was 06/20/05 at 6144 miles, so I don't think that the issues are related.
As simple as it is to screw up the install, that might be your problem. A dealer that has the worng install tool, experience, training, etc., and it will leak when installed inproperly over time.
But to have this problem not once in the first 48K and then 3 times in 12K makes me thing they have either botched the install and/or not used the newest seal.
Update:
I took the car in last week, and the tech says that there might not be a "leak"; only a little bit of "seepage". They cleaned the bottom of the bell housing, added some dye to the oil and asked me to drive it for 300 miles or so.
I just looked under the car today and the area is still relatively clean ! So things are looking good (for now, at least)
Obviously not every indie gives 2 years warranty on his work. Mine only 1 year and 12k miles - I might need to change him out - just got my RMS replaced (1st time at 33k miles).
If you aren't satisfied with Stevens Creek, try Michael Stead in Walnut Creek. I realize it's a long drive, but I went there when I lived in SF and now I'm in Fremont and I still go there. I trust Eric in the service dept. After having so many probs with BMW (the worst!!) and Mercedes dealers in the Bay Area, these guys are such a pleasure to deal with.
