Suggestion

One thing to remember that is often misunderstood, is the lowest octane that your car will run on that will not adversely retard the timing will deliver the most horsepower and torque.

At best run some octane booster, but a the price of race gas you would be burning money literally and gain no power.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Does anyone use a "better" grade of fuel for DE events? I'm using 93 (unfortunately with ethanol). Hell, I'm not sure if there are even gas stations that sell it without additives any more. Also, any opinions on using 100+ fuel for DE events. I did a brief search, and I believe the general opinion is that my ECU is calibrated for 93, so anything over that is a no-no. Thanks in advance, -td

POST 2Original post

You can buy better fuel at most of the tracks. I don't remember at what point the octane became irrelevant in my old C2 (Cali premium is 91, so the track gas made a slight difference), but in the GT3 anything >96 is pissing money away.

POST 3Original post

Some tracks have a pump w/ both unleaded and leaded "race" gas. You can also run VP 109, which is 105 octane... But you're only going to get about 4-5 mpg if even that and the benefit is very marginal. The car has the straight line speed out of the box with any octane fuel. The tough part will be the turns. Remember, if you feel the end getting lose, don't lift, otherwise you'll start spinning in circles. [ ]

POST 4Original post

One thing to remember that is often misunderstood, is the lowest octane that your car will run on that will not adversely retard the timing will deliver the most horsepower and torque. Overly high octane fuel if not required will decrease power. The higher the octane the slower the burn. You want the quickest and most complete burn possible without having to back off the ignition timing to a point where it will burn without detonation.

POST 5Original post

The car ECU is tuned for 93, so any race gas would be a waste of money since you have 93 in your state. At best run some octane booster, but a the price of race gas you would be burning money literally and gain no power.

POST 6Original post

Please go dyno your car on 91 octane. Then perform another dyno run on 105 octane and see if there is a difference. My money is on the 105 octane.

POST 7Original post

nick49 is dead-on right. Some cars in my past ran worse on premium than on the regular they were designed for. With that said, it is probably worth bumping your octane up a couple octane numbers for a DE. The reason is to help the engine avoid pulling back timing as a result of the increased heat soak/stress during a DE which may not part of the normal operation for which it was designed. You can surf the Union 76 site to find a location near you that sells 100 octane and blend yourself (if you have 76). A ballpark approximation is that 2 gallons of 100 octane per full tank will get you 1 octane number higher. 2 gallons in a 1/2 tank will get you 95, for example. Forget octane boosters. They are a joke. Over 95 is probably not helping.

POST 8Original post

That's easy money. Actually, it has already been done, according to a Porschephile I know who works as a chemist at a Gas company. Several cars designed to run on pump premium 93 were dyno'ed at 91, 93 and 100. Timing was slightly retarded to prevent knocking when they ran on 91. There was a loss of 5 HP max at 91, and no loss/gain at 100. Bottom line, there is a negligible loss at 91, and the only effect of going 100-105 octane is to empty your pocket. Just stick to 93. BTW, another tidbit from the same chemist. All premium gas is the same. BP gas can come from a SUNOCO/Texaco/whathaveyouco refinery/storage depot, and vice versa. There are few exceptions, such as the 94 octanes.
