Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

While being at it, I also installed a set of 17mm spacers.
Leading evidence: 'Install set of 17mm spacers' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'dumb question' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Install set of 17mm spacers' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

You will also notice that I replaced the original exhaust tips with the Turbo like ones (Schnell).

Rick - I replaced my stock mufflers with another set of stock mufflers that had been modified to sound like PSE.

Suspected cause
So here is probably a dumb question, but I am not very mechanically inclined.

Or did you need to widen that gap or replace the bumper ?
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Here you go. Took me about 2 hours.
Was a fun little project after a long day in the office.
Overall, I've been very impressed with the quality of these exhausts.
Also notice how small they are compared to the stock units. I love the sound. Gradually builds up as you get on the gas. Not obnoxious when you drive at low rpm (i.e. your own neighborhodd
).
You will also notice that I replaced the original exhaust tips with the Turbo like ones (Schnell).
While being at it, I also installed a set of 17mm spacers. The combination of the spacers and the new tips really makes the appearance of the car more agressive.
You know, on mine, the left and right pipes and tips angle in toward the center of the bumper - my left pipe clears the cutout by only about 1/8th of an inch. Any thoughts?
Rick - I replaced my stock mufflers with another set of stock mufflers that had been modified to sound like PSE. I had the same thing happen to me when I put the first muffler back on the car. I only had 1/4" clearance between the tips and the top of the bumper cutout. I loosened the clamp and rotated tip pipe at the clamp and got the tips to drop to the correct position.
I "borrowed" one Yves pics to illustrate what you need to do. Loosen the clamp (circled) and then rotate the pipe that holds the tips. Depending upon the direction of the rotation, this will either raise or lower the tips in the opening. Hope this helps.
Spacers : 5mm F/17mm rear. Bought them from Sunset. All OEM stuff. Great quality. The last pic is actually with the spacers on. Look at the wide stance. Will try to post some more pics tomorrow.
Fabspeeds : bought them from Vividracing. Great guy to deal with ! Well below 1000$, delivered to Atlanta.
Thanks, Tim, I'll check it out - I had a local guy do the install for me, I can only imagine the ways I can screw it up once I climb under there, but I'll give it a go!
Nutbeem, your car choice shows excellent taste, I am looking at a sound upgrade for my blk 02 C4S. What do you think of the fabspeed sound? Too loud ? Are you happy with the sound?
Eric
Hey ... those schnell tips (turbo like) fit in the cutout on the lower edge of a a regular C2 rear bumper ?? Or did you need to widen that gap or replace the bumper ? I think it looks nifty !!
Sid
Ah! I had asked you (Yves) where those tips were from in another thread. Got it now.
Same Q as Sid: do they fit a regular 99-01 C2 rear bumper or did you have to do something to the bumper to fit them?
So here is probably a dumb question, but I am not very mechanically inclined. Do you need any "special" tools to do the fabspeed install or the spacers install? I have ratchet sets, etc. Is that enough?
I didn't think it was too hard to swap the mufflers without removing the bumper cover. I went from stock OEM mufflers to modded OEM mufflers, which are larger than the Fabspeed, so I would think putting the Fabspeeds in would be even easier.
I did the OEM/GHL swap and didn't use any special tools other than a car jack, stands and sockets. I didn't take the rear wheels off but in hindsight I think that it would have helped a bit.
FYI, Orient Express has a DIY on RennTech where he took the bumper off.
Yves- Could you post close-ups of the tips installed, namely from the side of the car? I want to replace my GHL tips because I find them too short from the side (pics here:
