My RMS was bad as well and I replaced the ims, rms, aos, clutch.

He told me after this year Porsche ran into big trouble.

Inspect all ignition parts and replace as necessary including plugs.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

It's said to be easier to drop the trans and motor as one unit, It worked for me.
Engine is coming out. We are doing the following-
Water pump which is probably fine but may as well do it while its out.
RMS
Clutch
Inspect all ignition parts and replace as necessary including plugs.
Anything else you guys can think of?
Any upgrades or all OEM?
Its a stock Carrera. I want this done once then drive it like a German bitch in heat.
If your already draining the coolant, low temp thermostat? I did the under drive pulley this winter and then the low temp thermostat to attempt to make up for the reduced water pump speed ( and the extra cooling ).
I am installing an exhaust this winter while the car hibernates and have found way too many " while I am in there with everything apart" items... She should be tuned up and ready to rip for this summer tho!
Brian, you have a manual car; therefore, there is no need to drop the engine. Maybe you meant the transmission is being dropped?
I would strongly suggest getting the IMS bearing replaced along with other known wear parts...
1. AOS
2. RMS
3. Chain guides/tensioners/solenoids (especially if the engine is coming out)
4. coil packs
5. spark plugs and seals
6. flywheel inspection (may need replacement with clutch kit)
7. Get you cylinder bores inspected when the plugs are removed!
8. drop the sump plate and inspect for debris and metal
9. may be a good time to replace the fuel injectors
10. coolant expansion tank.
I know from your other threads you think your car is lucky but you’d be nuts not to do the ims with everything out. At that point it’s basically just the cost of the part. My RMS was bad as well and I replaced the ims, rms, aos, clutch.
Some of the things mentioned will be done. It’s a 21 year old car. It will be done properly. This man had and still has access to a lot of Porsche data. More than most are aware exists. The mechanic has gone out on his own after a dozen years working for a German car repair shop that did primarily Pcars. From what I was told Porsche didn’t think they would be in production much longer after the 99. It’s a special year. Sure other years have more horsepower with plenty of weak links so I am told and many of you already know. Not the 99 cars they should be considered separate from the rest they just look they same but they are not.
The IMSB may need to be done but he has assured me they are sound in the 99 cars. He lurks here. We talked about a few things but he is a serious guy who wants to build a name for himself. Just the investment he made in his shop shows it. Several things are being done at N/C. I promised him I would reveal the entire process and get the truth out on then 99. He told me after this year Porsche ran into big trouble. The less than 1% ISMB is not accurate as a failure. As for all 996 cars the bearing amongst many other things are caused by bad driving habits and continually taking the car beyond or below its capabilities. If you overheat this engine you have blown it.
Anyway this process will be thorough. I’m not lining the pockets of business’s unless I need to. Besides removing the engine by a skilled mechanic is not a big deal.
Plus I will get some play time doing some cleaning.
Two weeks down time is the plan.
Stay tuned many images to come.
If this thread turns into some kind of fiasco I am walking away. The wannabes who probably don’t even own a car get into the mix and manipulate what’s being said. No reason to be dishonest here. I want to have fun with this venture. I don’t need some idiot who doesn’t even own a 10mm wrench picking apart what I say.
Good for you man. The best route for an exhaust is to send it to Fister get it done right and have them coat it. Thats what I did and when they came back they looked amazing when I installed them the sound was perfect. No need to waste your money on a new exhaust you already have the best.
I bought my mine from RM European. It's not a tee connector but I think we're all talking about the same part.

You can get it from Auto Atlanta as well...aluminum/stainless steel. I have one and never have to worry about that stupid plastic fitting ever again.

No the "T" connector is a three way coolant line that sits under the coolant tank. This is the AOS line and always gets broken if you look at it wrong. Good option pictured above!
VitaminC may have confused the two.
Sounds like you have no problem firing the parts cannon at the car. Since the transmission is out, why not replace the pinion bearing and the synchros?
No mechanic did not. I want it out I want
to clean it up and do a full inspection. I am not paying top dollar to have this work done. He is a friend.
Every time we talk about the IMBS he laughs so hard. He said bring them all to me. I love LN they make me so much money it to the point I feel guilty.
So is pulling the engine for a clutch job. The pinion bearing and the synchros are known problem in these transmission. Since you are replacing a bunch of things as a "preventative measure", why not do them as well? There is a magnet inside the transmission that acts as a filter but once it get fully covered with metal sludge dust (it will even if everything is OK) it should be cleaned. For that, you need to pull the housing apart and SINCE you are there, might as well change that bearing and the synchros.
The part lists that were posted should be "inspect and replace only if needed" as opposed to "replace". If $hit works and looks good, leave it alone. You can easily introduce a problem where there wasn't a problem before.
Just a word of warning. It's not super easy to put the transmission top cover back on. It's also not easy to replace these bearings. I ended up sending my gearbox to GBox, they charged $2500. It would have taken me forever to DIY it.
I know. Haven't got far enough with mine to put the cover back on but I am in the middle of making a bearing puller that, if works, will salvage the input shaft bearing and save the need to cut the bearing to remove it.
What did GBox replace for $2.5K?
