I have a 1999 and I had to use the cigarette plug.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Hello - New member. I've read through many of the old threads around getting into the frunk when the battery is dead on a 996. Mine is a 2000 which does not have the positive terminal in the fuse box (as I had dearly hoped). So in order to get the frunk opened, can I simply plug in a battery jump starter into the cigarette lighter to power the latch in order to open the frunk? Or is my only option to search for the cable release and use it?
If the cigarette lighter jump starter approach is viable, can someone please suggest a specific brand/model (a Google of them is not clear what will work for my purposes)?
Thanks!
Not exactly correct. There is an electronic component to the otherwise mechanical trunk lid. You need to open the engine compartment lid, which doesn't require any electricity, and then attach a battery to the jump points as specified in the owners manual. This is the second such post today. Let search be your friend.
Thanks for the clarity - I did search and read lots of threads on here before posting - but there was a lack of clarity on the 1999 vs 2000 vs 2001 approaches. Some mentioned a cigarette lighter approach since I lacked the positive terminal - and so my specific question was in regards to that approach. From your answer, I take that as a no and to instead pop the engine compartment and go from there. I guess I'll try and keep my 911's owners manual inside the house instead of the frunk (I don't like keeping it under the steering wheel in that flimsy holder) for future reference. Heck, I even read through the 996 FAQ - neat instructions on the custom manual cable extension, but nothing on what to do based on your year of 996. Maybe the admins, or you, could post such a helpful post in the FAQ for future new members in the same predicament. Thanks.
Could you open the engine compartment when the battery is dead?
I have a 1999 and I had to use the cigarette plug. Very easy but you have to drive to walmart and buy a cigarette plug with exposed wires.
You can open the engine lid without a battery. Check the owner's manual under "Front and Rear Hoods" - Page 92 in the MY2000 manual. And "Emergency Starting with Jumper Cables" - pages 183,184.
And you don't remember all of details!?!!! I read mine too but didn't know that the front lid wouldn't open with a dead battery until the "opportunity" arose.
I have a 2003 so not apples to apples. I relocated the emergency pull cable to the frunk so I could access it and I also wired in an access point to charge the battery without having to worry about pull cables.
Hey everyone, just wanted to throw out a couple options to avoid the hassle altogether for those that might be interested as
we have some simple solutions for getting into the frunk, or Jump starting your cars....
1- Antigravity
Batteries
has a Lithium Starter Battery that has BUILT-IN WIRELESS Jump Starting. So even if you left the ignition or lights on, or left the car in storage too long you would simply press our Wireless keyfob that comes with our Lithium Battery and it will turn on the battery and energize the car so you can open the frunk or start the car again. So it eliminates worrying about fuse panels, pull cables or access points. Additional maybe it's raining or your spouse was driving the car and knows nothing about energizing the battery,it can be done inside the safety of the car, all you do is press the key fob you left in the glove box or on your keychain and your car starts and you drive away.
You Tube
2- Another option we have, as seen in the example below is a Harness Kit made with 10Awg Silicone wire that allows you to route our Harness from your battery to the edge of the hood, then if you ever need to energize the car to open the hood, or even start the car then you simply slide our Antigravity XP-10 MICRO-START Mini Jump Starter onto the Harness and start the car or energize it.
