Just had a 996 with replaced motor go for less on BAT.

Suspected cause
If PPI is ok, seems decent but I suspect can do better.

Suggestion
Definitely use a shop for the PPI that will check for bore scoring.

Suggestion
As I wrote above, this car isn't clean enough to be in a showroom.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have been in the market for a 996 for a little while now and believe to have found one... although from a dealership:
Background
$23,000
57k miles
4 Owners
PO drove about 20k miles from 2016 through 2019
Motor Werks in Chicago installed IMS (LN) and RMS in 2016 before selling to PO
Car comes with two sets of wheels - those pictured + stock rims - and General GMAX 235s and 275s. Per tire rack, they are summer tires, which means I'll need to get winter tires as it'll be my DD
2 sets of keys + manual
Other than this, I do not have receipts of maintenance completed, although do have a CarFax. Car seems to have been maintained although not entirely sure what work was completed. This is really all I know about the car.
3-month, 3,000 mile warranty included
If the car looks good (I have yet to see it in person), I plan on getting a PPI.
Let me know what you all think! I know we're a bit light on the background info.
Definitely use a shop for the PPI that will check for bore scoring. If it's always been a Chicago car (cold weather) combined with the model year makes the car a prime candidate for scoring
Paint looks rough from the pics, although interior looks good. Definately a PPI. Price seems a little high to me. Just had a 996 with replaced motor go for less on BAT. If PPI is ok, seems decent but I suspect can do better. Any service records? That would help.
Replacement of water pump, AOS, etc.
Get PPI
You need to contact the shop to get records of IMS install to see about additional work was done, that would normally be done when the gearbox is out, BUT not always. Don't assume anything.
You need to have a few grand ready for preventative maintenance items they may not have been done.
Things like plugs, coils, suspension, brakes add up real quick.
IMO, the price is about right.
Definitely have an indy do a PPI and go from there. Car looks okay overall, in need of polishing, I see swirls and hard water spots but that doesn't mean its a bad car. I sold a similar car for a detailing client of mine for $21.5 over the summer and that was a cab, same color, mileage, 996.2 and a good PPI.
Get a really good inspection done on this car. There are some redflags here. Can't believe a dealer would put a car with this bad of a paint in the showroom without doing any paint corrections. This tells me they just want to do a quick flip. The cheap tires on it tell me that whoever put them on did it to save money, probably to flip the car. Triple check that the IMS bearing is registered with LN. From what I remember Jake writing, some shops tend to just use the sticker that goes on the door jamb that the bearing kit comes with and then, return everything else for a refund. The battery cover is missing, why? Did they have to boost the car so many times that it went missing? As I wrote above, this car isn't clean enough to be in a showroom.
Also just notice the Wheel of Fortune and the bell in the background. Run dude run as fast as you can away from this place.
At 60k miles these cars need significant maintenance, if your not able to ascertain they have been done, be prepared for that. While a PPI is mandatory for any 996 imo, it wont reveal if the water pump, thermostat, injectors, coil packs, plugs and myriad of other preventative maintenance has been done. Obtaining records of such items being done recently would be paramount to me if contemplating a car at this mileage, good luck in your search!
Wow. I feel even better that I kept my old bearing and paperwork/qualifacation from respected local shop as documentation.
wonder how much the sticker is worth....😉
what are the other wheels? I personally wouldn't run 19's, due to factory recommendations. Exercise as much Paitence when searching as you can. If it checks all your boxes.....
Seems like a pretty decent deal to me. A good detail will take care of the current exterior roughness and a new set of tires is probably in order. Both of those are easy fixes.
As others have said, do get a good PPI to see how the rest of things look and have some money set aside for any repairs/maintenance it may need. It seems to have some nice options and if it's a color combo you want, then it's tough to say no.
The Wheel of Fortune thing is such a staple of the high volume mainstream brand dealer. I can't believe they still do stuff like this, but it must work!
I agree with all of this. PPI, paint correction, some spare cash for misc stuff, and you should be good to go (depending on PPI findings).
Price is reasonable, but try to negotiate it down a bit.
Why is the battery cover missing?
...in addition to the paint that isn't polished, the leftover oxidized shmoo all over the battery tray hints that the car may not have gotten the best ongoing care. I won't opine on the General tires - they were crap back when I used to put Generals on my Mazda pickup, but maybe that's no longer the case.
What are the details of the 3-month, 3,000 mile warranty? If it's an actual decent warranty, this might make rolling the dice incrementally less scary. Can you give it back if the motor pops, or if the oil filler and/or coolant tank fills up with intermix?
99% of dealers are all about volume, you can't pump cars out if you are spending hours doing multistep corrections on cars. This thing was probably washed with a broom and bucket of dirty water unless its some high-class dealer. I've known a few people that have worked at the 'detailing' shops for the local dealers, it ain't pretty.
The General G-Max RS actually has a pretty good reputation..especially for the price. Unless you plan to track the car, those tires will be fine to run until it's time for replacement.
Geez
You hit the nail on the head with this.
I was enamored over a used Cayenne from a dealership in Florida.
I was just about ready to pay for a PPI at the local Porsche Dealership, but then made one more round of questions, realizing that I didn't get the dealership shop Intake report, knowing the car came from an Auction.
Just about fell out of my chair, when the salesman says "We don't do that, we pay a service to inspect vehicles before purchasing at the auction."
I responded, " You didn't even change the oil, and you are expecting to get big $$$$.?"
They detailed it and did nothing.
"Thanks for your time, I will pass on this one".
First and foremost, you guys have been incredibly helpful with your timely responses bringing a wealth of knowledge to the table.
You all hit the nail right on the head - this is coming from a dealer looking for a quick flip. After persistently asking, I was given a number of receipts, mostly oil changes, IMS/RMS, a headlight bulb change, and a battery replacement. I also received a receipt for the rims and tire purchase. That being said, I still knew very little about the routine maintenance conducted (water pump, brakes, clutch, etc.), oil changes side. Within one of the receipts, I saw the name of the previous owner and did a simple court system search (legal proceedings are available to the public - and free) and was able to find out that the gentleman is going through a divorce, which is possibly the reason why he sold to the dealership.
Anyway, I found a couple reputable indies in my area and after conversing for about a week, I found one that really know they stuff. They are Porsche specialists and have designated air cooled and water cooled techs.
I received the PPI report as summarized in the following snapshot:
Had a discussion with the tech to go over the PPI. They bore scoped and found cylinder scoring (will receive pictures soon) - at this point I asked how much he would pay for it and he said less than 9k. I called back the dealership to describe what I have learned and put in an offer for 9k (hey, that's the price of a rolling chasis, am I right?). The salesguy will talk to the sales manager, although, he emphasized the fact that someone will buy it... either from the dealership or at an auction for more than 9k.
I've wanted a 911 since 2004, during my high school days. While I'm disappointed at how the condition of the car turned out, I'm glad this wasnt an impulse purchase only to have buyers remorse when a random "lifter tick" shows up and ends up leading to a $10k+ bill.
Wow, A+ buyer right here. What you did was great work - any new buyer should take note. Just dodged a bullet, or at least, some pain and five-figure repairs coming sooner than later.
