Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Personally, the intermediate is a good idea the way I see it and as Jake Raby has mentioned, it was used successfully back to the early aircooled days.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

24 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Not a liar but an honest guy. With the whole backstory..

POST 3Original post

The only indisputable evidence or proof is if the IMSB was replaced with an LN Engineering IMSB and registered with LN Engineering along with the VIN. Anything else is disputable to a large extent. Just look for a 99 with a manufacture date in 98 and you are good to go.

Good to know but where's the backstory? You're supposed to have a backstory.

POST 9 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Given what I have learned and seen on this forum the only people who can homely tell us if the 1999 996 has a problem is LN industries. They know how many have been sold and also how many failed and how many were sound when removed. That is aside from us owners. They may not want to speak up because they won’t be selling many more 1999 dual row IMSB. I read on hear recently that someone said they mentioned it was 2nd least reliable. Im hoping they surface and provide more information. Maybe even open there books and tell us how many they have sold. Either way this does them well. If the information is accurate they win with buyers and the past and possibly down the road aside from being wicked expensive there products are widely known to all as high quality. Hoping for some honest info instead of the spin slot of companies like to use. If the dual row bearing is a success and LN can install one just as reliable the it’s a win win.

That damn homely IMSB...rears it's ugly little head again

POST 18Original post

I'm not sure what your purpose of this thread is about, but assuming you are looking for a case of a 99 with a failed IMSB, I have already told you of a case I had (in one of your other IMSB threads). I have two 99's one with 177k and original IMSB and another with 70k that I found a failing dual Row IMSB on it while doing a proactive IMSB upgrade to the roller bearing. I still have the failing dual row IMSB that sounds like would be very valuable to you, that I would be willing to part with, it hold no sentimental value to me.

Yes, it's been discussed for many years on the forums that the Porsche factory dual row bearing found in early 1997-2001 Porsche 986 and 996 models has been recognized as the second most durable among the three types of intermediate shaft bearings Porsche used. The most durable was the large ceramic single row bearing found in the M97 engines and is consistently referred to as the "M97 bearing". The worst of the bunch is the single row found in 2002 - 2005 cars. Some early cars in 2001 had this bearing. If you really worry over the problem, then install the IMS Solution. The same plain bearing design found in the bullet proof Mezger engines. Regarding LN Engineering, I don't think there is some top secret thing going on here. We're not talking UFOs or global outbreak coverup. It's not just LN engineering, but many people in the service business have recognized the bearing is a problem. Some deniers will constantly beat the drum of doubt and disbelief, but most feel that Porsche should have stayed with the plain bearing. The fact that there was a class action settlement and eventually Porsche ended up eliminating the intermediate shaft altogether in the 9A1 proves the point that something needed to be done with the engine platform. Personally, the intermediate is a good idea the way I see it and as Jake Raby has mentioned, it was used successfully back to the early aircooled days. On their IMS retrofit website, LN states they sold 30,000 IMS kits since 2008. I'm sure if that's up to date information, but I wouldn't won't any other bearing in my car. I think they have the best product. LN technically doesn't offer IMS installation on your car. You need to contact an LN IMS certified installer.
