Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So I'm soon to be a 996 911 Owner and giving a lot of thought to the IMS issue: searched the Sticky and the Forum after hearing about this "no warning", unknown odds potential catastrophe, when I hear about the IMS Guardian. What a great idea: an early warning system to avoid blowing up your engine! First surprise I had was that all 996s hadn't already been fitted with this sensor. Second HUGE surprise was that they stopped making them a few years ago due to insufficient demand !!!??? Can someone explain how that could logically happen? Were the units found not give an alert in time? Too many false positives? Priced in excess of an engine replacement? Too many Porsche owners genetically predisposed against insurance? I wonder how many would need to join a group buy to make it worthwhile to do a production run? Oh Well.......

POST 2Original post

Best thing you can do is have a thorough PPI which includes checks for bore scoring. if you are worried about IMS failure have that addressed as soon as you buy the car. Install the IMS solution and resolve that issue once and for all. After that, check your oil filter for metal debris at every oil change, have your oil analyzed, change your oil regularly with the right oil (DT40, Motul, etc), dont warm up the engine before driving (start the engine and drive and, until warm, don't lug the engine. Keep rpms around 3k), and realize there are other failures with this engine other than IMS. Al that aside, these can be great cars. I have two if them!

POST 3Original post

I think the warning system was close to $600. So you are paying $600 for something to tell you when you need to spend $3000 on something. Just spend the $3000 if you are worried about it.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Quotes source posts: 16362907, 16363024

You guys are missing the point. Odds are any given engine has, as near as I can tell from the literature, only a 10-20% chance of failing from a bad IMS. I'll spend $600 any day to avoid a $15,000+ engine replacement that probably won't happen. And in the remote chance it warns me of a problem, and triggers my need to spend $3000, my savings are $11,400+ over the repairing the blown engine. In the more likely chance that my IMS does NOT fail, I've saved $2400 over what you guys recommend. I'm beginning to think the demise of the "Guardian" relates to a high concentration of owners with either a penchant for gambling or no other alternatives to spend their money....but I'm probably wrong

POST 5Original post

The Guardian detected metal in the oil. Metal can come from other parts of the engine....not just the IMSB. You are correct that it comes down to risk tolerance. Rather than worry about it, many people elect to proactively replace the bearing. With these engines, something will eventually fail. It is really a matter of how much and on what do you spend your money on preventative maintenance.

POST 12Original post

Sounds like they worked pretty well, as even Jake endorsed The Guardian. https://rennlist.com/forums/996-foru...rdian-but.html

POST 13Original post

The system worked well. They functioned well, and they saved engines from completely being destroyed from being driven too long with a failure that had no symptoms. Over time, the cheap, knock off IMS kits made the IMSG a thing of the past. The system cost the same as some cheap IMS kits, and people just started believing the lies told by those suppliers, and buying the cheap kit, rather than fitting the IMSG. This meant the demand for the unit was reduced... Then the distributors stopped submitting POs for them. Once the inventory we had was out of stock, no more were made. The employee I had making them in house was moved to another one of my businesses. Also, during all this we were using a certain Porsche seat heater switch to make the 996 version of the IMSG fit into the dash in a very clean manner. When we started the IMSG production, I bought every switch in the world, knowing what would happen when someone figured out what I was doing.. We ran out of those switches in 2016, and now they are discontinued. Without that switch, the system doesn't integrate into the dash, and the whole wiring harness is changed if you try to use another switch for the "press to test" warning, and etc. These things killed the IMSG, so you can stop the conspiracy theory nonsense, and wondering..

POST 14Original post

Bring it back, Jake! I want one! What switch did you use?

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 16364233

My facility is now an engine factory. All the areas where we did this type of production are now reallocated for additional engine clean rooms, and etc. A lot has changed here in the last 9 years, and aside from the switch that is required to make this work no longer being available, the cost to produce the kit would even be higher than before. I have zero intentions of bringing any other products to market at Flat 6 outside of our complete engines. We have one focus, we have one product, and this is what makes it the best that can be bought.

POST 17Original post

Another thing to consider is, if there is enough metal in the oil to set off the Guardian, then the engine will no-longer pass a pre-qualification for an non-sealed IMSB install. To ensure a quality IMSB install, it makes better sense to pro-actively replace the IMSB before it starts to fail, no matter how early it can be detected.

POST 18Original post

Many products over the years meet similar fate,, especially if there is a "trend" to push it.. and with any electronic gadget,, the risk is if you get the volume high enough, big competitors will jump in the pool and competing with Bosche or Delphi if they decided to play isn't a win.. I'm actually surprised Porsche hasn't done some signal analysis to detect some of the internal problems,, Or Bosche, since its not just IMS its balance shafts, tubo bearings etc.. at commodity production levels you'd think it would be in there.. Remember back when Knock sensors were expensive and a new thing? LOL

POST 19Original post

The manufacturers are too busy giving out Unicorns and Rainbows.. Thats why coolant temp gauges are fake these days. Its all good, the world isn't blowing up around you (even though it really is). No one wants to know there's a problem, they can't "handle the stress".

POST 28Original post

So the wait is at 12 months right now? My 996 runs good, but Ive been talking to the wife about an FSI rebuild anyway. I already have HRE wheels and will have 5K in the aero once its done. I may as well get the engine in best shape so I can just enjoy it. Heck I may take the 996 on the One Lap one day or Power Tour and show everyone what they are missing.

POST 29Original post

Quotes source post: 16364946

Beyond 12 months. I shut down orders again till we get caught back up to the standard 12 month wait. Currently we are at 16 months. I am just adding names to the non- committal wait list, we add these in chronological order and pick the next one the list when a job is finished.

POST 30Original post

Quotes source post: 16364946

I got lucky and got a spot that was around 11 months out because someone didnt commit and dropped out. I woulda had to have put my name on the wait list otherwise. I agree with ya tho. If you have the wheels and the aero, might as well go all out. Seems like itd be your forever car.

POST 31Original post

To the OP: Study science and engineering, and then "critical thinking". You might not immediately "get it", but It helps to cut through the hype, pictures, and claims.

POST 32Original post

Because outside of this forum it's not a real concern... nor an issue. Look at the sticky thread for how many cars DON'T have either of these "imminent" issues, and you'll see why. Like with most forums of all types, the outliers/exceptions are blown extremely out of proportion into something they aren't, which causes confusion and issues like this. Yes, an extremely small amount of cars have this issue, but most don't, even according to the 996 nerds (like me) here. I have 94,3xx miles on my 03 C4S, done now 4 2-day HPDE events with it, original IMS/RMS on a Tip and haven't lost an ounce of sleep about it. It gives me serious doubt most of the time into the capability or regiment of "DIY'ers" or how the cars is being serviced when I see threads about serious exceptions to how my car runs and performs and other people locally I know with a 996 variant. I pay to have mine done and it shows. But, if you find a model you want and just can't deal, pay the extra $2k and fix it and move on with life... or just get a 997.2. Really not a big deal. Or hell get a Turbo and have a nice 996 with a Mezger! The more I drive my 996 the more I kind of want to stay with a model, and just move to a Turbo...

POST 33Original post

Quotes source post: 16365470

The grammar of that sentence is already hard enough to read -- but are you trying to say "it can't happen to me" because you maintain your car well? I wish you continued enjoyment and continued good nights of sleep, but I think those with larger sample sizes and/or negative outcomes might take issue with your confidence that your mechanic's (or your own DIY?) skills somehow make your car immune to a failure.

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
