Since you have a 99, there was a TSB back then of erroneous activation of the "low coolant warning" when no low coolant issue was present.

The car runs great whether it's flashing or not...never over heats, no other running issues.

Suggestion

Its unlikely thats the cause of your light issue, but if the coolant is quite old, or you dont know how long its been, a coolant flush (using a vacuum system to remove all 5.5-6 gallons) might be a good thing to do anyway at some point, just for preventative maintenance.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

On occasion I have a flashing light on the upper end of the temperature guage of my 1999 996 C. Sometimes it's red sometimes it's green. The flash rate is about 1-2 seconds. There is no consistency of occurrence, sometimes it could be a week or more between flashing, rarely more than every 2 or 3 times it's driven. I don't have an owners manual, or service manual, but I do have a copy of '101 projects for Porsche 996'. Thanks, George

POST 2Original post

Durametric. _ Ignore flashing lights on a 911 at your own peril.. Remember most of them mean something happened,, not that its going to happen. Overheating is death on a AL engine. I know there are at least 2 modes on that light,, 1 is low coolant (Not emergency)

POST 3Original post

If it is the Temp gauge warning light - it could be low coolant level or the engine compartment blower failure. Here is a link to a PDF owners manual (although a little difficult to negotiate) https://www.manualslib.com/manual/13...uge&selected=7

POST 4Original post

Four functions of the coolant warning light: 1. Engine coolant level too low -- light flashes slowly (0.5 Hz) 2. Engine compartment temperature too high -- light flashes slowly (0.5 Hz) (engine compartment blower might be faulty) 3. Engine coolant temperature too high -- light is lit; pointer on the right 4. Temperature sensor at water outlet faulty -- light flashes rapidly (1 Hz) ; pointer on the right Note: The temperature warning in point three is indicated if the conditions "engine coolant temperature too high" and "engine coolant level too low" are present simultaneously.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thank you to every one who answered my query about the flashing light on the temp guage. The temp stays normal at just past 180 all the time, unless lots of idle in 90 + days, even then it rarely rises past the 0 in 180 on the guage. The coolant level is full and the water / coolant circulates fairly well when viewing with the coolant cap off. The coolant looks old but is good according to Indi shop that has done the maintenance for 4 years for the prior owner. It's time for a coolant flush / fill so Im hoping it's just old weak coolant, and will remedy itself when I change it. I have noticed lately that the fan comes on immediately on start up with a cold engine (overnight) and runs for 2 -3 minutes then shuts off until motor is hot and it's needed for cooling. It just started doing this but the light flashing was occuring before the fan got into the act. It's the slow flash, abd when I park and return later the light rarely comes on again. I checked wiring and cleaned and treated wire harnesses with Audio grade connector treatment. The car runs great whether it's flashing or not...never over heats, no other running issues. Maybe it's a dying sensor, can't reconcile it with any symptoms mentioned in the replies...so I will dig a bit deeper, or educate myself more thoroughly on all potential causes...so I'm no longer taunted by an idiot light that is better informed than me. Thx again!

POST 6Original post

You may just have a bad coolant level sensor. A replacement is only about $30. It's a little tricky getting to it but you should be able to loosen the coolant overflow tank enough to get your hand underneath it without taking it out completely. Weak coolant would not trigger it.

POST 7Original post

Since you have a 99, there was a TSB back then of erroneous activation of the "low coolant warning" when no low coolant issue was present. The fix was to install a "new redesigned" coolant tank. The old design is no longer available, so if you have the original tank, it could be your issue..

This is normal behavior for a 99. You can keep temp down a bit by having the AC button depressed whenever your speed is 40mph or less, especially in very hot weather. When was the last time your coolant was replaced? Its unlikely thats the cause of your light issue, but if the coolant is quite old, or you dont know how long its been, a coolant flush (using a vacuum system to remove all 5.5-6 gallons) might be a good thing to do anyway at some point, just for preventative maintenance.
