They replaced the plugs, and swapped positions of the coil on #4 and #6. Problem solved, allegedly.

Last month I had a CEL issue that turned out to be a bad coil on the #4 cylinder.

Friday afternoon I was told there is a "mystery problem" with the number 4 cylinder which I think is interesting since they just replaced the coil on that one.

Suspected cause
I'm betting that if the engine appeared to be running fine, then it's probably a bad sensor, or a connection that has worked loose since they worked on it last.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Last month I had a CEL issue that turned out to be a bad coil on the #4 cylinder. Fixed it and went on down the road. This morning I get a flashing CEL with a "take to workshop" message. Got car flatbedded to dealer. I was told "flashing CEL is generally not a good thing at all". Any thoughts? Car was running fine. It is a 2004 with almost 5k miles.

So they put in a new coil on the #4 cylinder, they still had a misfire there. They replaced the plugs, and swapped positions of the coil on #4 and #6. Problem solved, allegedly. Yesterday driving to work and I get a new flashing CEL with take to workshop message. I have taken it back. The car drives fine, but this is now the third trip. I am not all that confident these guys know what they are doing, but I have no other alternative dealer.

Blk. Sorry to hear about the flashing CEL. Not good.
Did they give you the codes? If we could get the error codes it might help us figure out the problem a little better.
I'm sitting here pondering the "mystery error" on cylinder 4 and I'm not sure I buy it. An engine is a relatively simple thing. Your car knows what the error is, it's just a matter of how cryptic the messages are that it is sending. The only reason I can figure out for a "mystery error" is that there's nothing apparently wrong with the car that the dealer can find, even though the light came on. To me that would prompt me to check the sensors to see if they're malfunctioning.
Did you notice any misfiring when the light came on? Any thing sound or feel abnormal?
Nothing out of the ordinary at all. The car was running seemingly just fine. A few weeks back when the bad coil was on the car it was pretty evident something was amiss, but that was sending a solid check engine light that would simply go away and no error present if I turned the car off for a few minutes. Anyway, I agree the engien really is a pretty simply thing, but they seem to not know what to do. We'll see on Monday. They probably just wanted to go home for the weekend on Friday and really did not get into it in depth.
Interesting. Pity that they didn't give you the codes. I'm betting that if the engine appeared to be running fine, then it's probably a bad sensor, or a connection that has worked loose since they worked on it last.
Was the car runnig fine when the CEL ws flashing or was it running like it was before the coil was changed? Sounds like an electrical problem. I hope for your sake that it is not a short in the wiring harness.
Car is a manual. They seem to have fixed the issue. They put in some new plugs, and swaped the #4 and #6 coils and it seems to be running like a champs. I have had it back several days. I hope it is fine because I am taking an out of town trip this weekend. I'd hate to get stranded in the Texas heat on the side of the road.
The CEL came on again yesterday. What a pain. I went through this CRAP with my car and a coil. One dealer and their useless tech made me go back a couple times before I told them to stick it. Went to another dealer that I now think has excellent techs, and they diagnosed the problem in minutes. Make sure they are actually changing these parts. First bloody dealer kept telling me bad gas, couldn't replicate, blah, blah, blah. Sounds like junior is running the service center.
I had this go on till my engine blew up a couple of weeks ago. My scenario started in March 04 when the car would flash CEL me when joining traffic on the highway, I'd accelerate in 2nd, hold the RPMs at around 6 -> 6.5k RPMs and then flashing CEL. The codes were P0300 and P0302 and P0305 type codes. It was 100% repeatable, just lift at 6k+ RPMs and it would flash after a couple of seconds. I started doing HPDEs later that year and it happened 100% on track when doing point bys when I'd lift.
The dealer swapped coils, checked plugs etc. No idea.
It kept happening and eventually I got a solid CEL. Dealer time, a month later, I got the car back with a new DME and new lifters (4.5k). It still happened. In the end PCNA said they had no idea, "Wait till something diagnosible happens, we can't keep throwing parts at it".
It never was resolved and first my tip failed with a leaking front pump seal and then 200 miles later the engine blew a cylinder couple of weeks back and I'm waiting to get the car with the new engine.
Honestly there are two in Houston. One of them is terrible and no one goes there. THe other well they know everyone comes to them and they are allegedely the best one. I just do not have that much confidence at the moment, but that might just be me being paranoid.
