The real reason for the mechanical up/down spoilers on German cars is because the TUV requires physical protuberances to be covered with soft rubber in order to protect pedestrians (that's why the old whaletail has a black rubber edge - this law came out in '76 when Porsche changed from the ducktail to the whaletail).

For me, unless you are cleaning under there or are actually trying to cool off the motor, the tail should stay down.

When running track events, I manually deploy my spoiler before starting my run and it stays up until I shut down and restart or manually lower it with the switch.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I was at a poser cafe earlier and there was a C4S parked and he left the rear spolier up by hitting the rocker switch. Bit sad for me. Any other saddos here
?
Because automatically it comes down after you have been flooring it. Therfore you need to make a concious poser effort to press the rocker switch located near the fuse box to make it stand nice and errect whilst parked. like this

There are times when it looks cool to have the spoiler up. There are times when it IS cool to leave the spoiler up, such as after a run at the track to help cool the engine down. I don't think leaving it up makes me or anyone else that does it a "poser".
Or if you are just driving you're car hard. After you drive it "hard", it is suggested that, before you turn off the engine, you let it idle for 5 minutes or so AND put the spoiler up OR open the hood of the engine.
First off, if you own a C4S 911, and you like the wing up, just for asthetics, thats fine by me, but he was probable runnin' thru gears hard, OR was hittin' over a hundy for a lengthy time, and when he got to the coffee shop, he was airin' it out. Either way, he's still cool in MY book!!
Last time I checked, posing was trying to be something you're not. The only thing that comes even close to what you're trying to reference might just the term "ricer"...but even that I don't see how it applys to someone who has a factory wing up.
HEEEEE stop ragging at tip's!!!!
The new 997 turbo tip is faster than the stick version.....and they kind of drive "tip" in F1....no clutch!! Do you think I am happy that I have a tip???? NO I AM NOT
....but had to compromise because of my wife!!!
Actually Nicolaas...the 997 TT is NOT faster in the tip version, it has a faster 0-60 time because they spool up the turbos with the brakes on from a stand still....like drag racers...probably not good on the transmission to do for everyday driving and once it gets going the manual is faster. Now the PDK transmission that is coming will be faster than a manual....
Incorrect. When running track events, I manually deploy my spoiler before starting my run and it stays up until I shut down and restart or manually lower it with the switch. Even accelerating out of lower speed corners it stays deployed (I can see it in my rearview mirror). If I don't do this, it is constantly going up and down throughout the session. At the end of the session I lower it back down. This is actually better for the motor and airflow for the engine on the track.
Turbos have the spoiler switch in the dash. This is an easy upgrade for non-turbos simply requiring a factory switch and some wiring. I have mine on the dash for easier access with driving gloves on at the track.
Nicolaasdb,
Newport is partially correct. The 997 tip is faster to 60 and 100 (per Porsche) from a dead stop over the manual. From a dead stop to over 100, the manual will win. The tip gets it advantage off the line is due to a combination of power braking and gearing. It is not faster under any other situation. From even a 5 mph start, the manual will easily have the advantage. This difference is amplified on a road course where the manual easily outruns its automatic bretheren (per Porsche on the Nurburgring).
I think I have read the test about the new PDK transmission ( I guess) anyway mine doesn't have to be that fast...just loud and maybe next time I will keep my spoiler up to be a complete POSEUR!!! ( giving poser a French twist to make it a more annoying word!)
Come one if you are poser in a Porsche what the hell are you in a Yellow Lambo or a red Ferrari???
Porsches are the most understated sportscars around...okay besides the Honda Prelude look-a-like Maserati...
I don't get why people are so concerned with what other people do... Seems like there are more important things to worry about. I hate people who think I bought a Porsche to pick up chicks or want to look cool. I could care less if people see me or not. If anything I like driving with as few people on the roads as possible.
I gotta admit that I know what the original poster is talking about, although I am not sure poser is the word I would use.
A few weeks ago the wife and I pulled up to a valet at the Club House in South Coast. There was another black cab there (looked just like mine with chrome wheels and all) and the guy had the tail up. Cruising around the mall or in from the freeway I just thought it looked a little weird. I started making fun when the valet came up, saying, "Should I raise my tail as well?" Anyway, I kinda felt like a jerk cuz the owner was standing right there on his cell phone. Total "guido" as the wife put it.
For me, unless you are cleaning under there or are actually trying to cool off the motor, the tail should stay down.
Nothing wrong with the tip....these cars are soooo fast from the factory, tip or manual...they are faster than 90% of the cars on the road....enjoy what you drive....
I like the spoiler down too.....when it goes up it should have a reason!!
You right newport....and I love what I drive..don't really care if other do or don't...but like it better when they do..I love to see nice cars on the road! and can appreciate them!
I think the cars look cool both ways. I used to chuckle when I saw a parked car with the wing up but what the heck? Only a few people on this planet know it is a simple push of the button, especially in a 993. It is fun to slow down for toll booths and watch other people point to the back your car and you can read their lips "did you see that?", Then the expert in the car starts making flapping gestures with their hands. Oh yea, if you drove my car a lot in congested areas with traffic, I would have no problem with a tip. In those conditions the car is so inside the envelope of capability who cares. Then when you get out in the open you can row the box anyway.
Greetings from Nantucket= Another beautiful beachday!! The fishing was great last night!
Steve
I guess if the guy who leaves his wing up is a poser then so are all the folks who put on aero kits and don't track the car. How about putting nice wheels on the car? How about cleaning your car?
What an idiot (the OP)
I have had a couple people honk and point to the spoiler, then I press the button and you can see them point, showing their kid, bored wife or friend, SEE...
I am a poser at heart!
"What an idiot (the OP)"
Man, it was just an observation, no big deal. I thought we called each other names in school
We as humans observe what other humans do and to me it seemed a bit lame but hey at least a couple of people agree with me.
"I think the OP is the ultimate poser, trying to prove his mettle as a Porsche fanatic by making that ridiculous statement!"
oh another insult. Mitch is a nice chap isn;t he?
Sorry if you took offense to my statements. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones applies here. I have strong responses to statements like yours which was sure to offend a fair amount of folks here.
I think the moral of this thread is....labels are gay, what one likes, another may not. Don't be judgemental of anyone, P-car owner OR rice-kiddies.
Point is this -- hopefully after you have gotten to the point of owning a true exotic, all the high school **** is left to others. We should be above this.
Now, on the other-hand, if you put those wheels on your porsche that stick out 3 feet from the car, you'r a WANNABE Gangsta!!!!
Brothers know what im talking about!
Correct me if I'm wrong, because I've only owned one Porsche with a fixed wing (GT3), but haven't owners of the moveable wing had problems with the mechanism breaking eventually with all the up and down those things do? Isn't this moveable wing another thing "to go wrong" and fix down the road? Couldn't the guy just be leaving it in the up position to prevent this and in its most efficent position? Can't we all just get along...
Wow, did you guys have a bad weekend or what?
OP, welcome to the board. It's usually a pretty nice place to hang out. As for your observation, many people do stuff to and with their Porsches that I think is stupid but at the end of the day, it's their car so what the hell. Live and let live.
Jim
Here's a radical thought...
The guy forked over his cash like the rest of us. If it makes him happy, he can leave his spoiler up, paint the car pink, add a vinyl roof and put on spinners. He may, in fact, be a poseur but who really cares.
On second thought, if he had the vinyl roof I WOULD care. That's just not right.

Isn't a poser someone who purchases a sports car capable of 177+mph in a country that has as it's highest speed limit 75mph. Why pose on the highway as if you are in Germany during the week and then pose even more on the weekend as a Leman's racer in a assembly line production car?
Like you say guys we are all posers. Long live the posers. I usually pose by whipping someones *** on the motorway
, BTW my wing is most definately up when I do that.
What a lame thread ! Discussing the poser-ity (new word!) of keeping the wing up or down. Sigh.... Can't we leave something just for passion or asthetics ? And it DOES increase the down force and it IS a factory option !
Now,
Is the added downforce required ? No ..
Is the added asthetics required ? No ...
Is the power of a 996 required on street ? No ...
Some thing are pure passion, pure asthetics ... live and let live.
cheers
Sid
Naw, you have a cab. That automatically puts you at the top of the poseur list, followed by everyone who has a tip, carbon fiber, cup holders, weighs more than 2,500 lbs, sunroof, stock suspension, rear seats, air conditioning, navigation, targa top, everyone who has the Illy dash-mounted espresso maker rather than the Braun, yadda yadda yadda.
I must admit that this is a stupid thread, but like a train wreck, I can't take my eyes off it
washington dc porsche -- What's up with you? Your an angry dude. The Professor has probably logged more track miles than you have seen in your rides to Starbucks for latte with your pretty car. Get over yourself calling him out
ya gotta be kidding me. It is obvious that washington dc porsche is joking around. It's called sarcasm. Learn it. Enjoy it.
<--- see the smiley. It means that I am not being entirely serious.
In any event, LV Dell is no wilting lilly. I doubt that he needs any defenders.
Besides, he is a cab driver, he deserves all the crap he gets
<--- see the smiley, it means I am intentionally harassing Dell in good nature.
This is great entertainment. I was wondering who was going to respond
Haven't you ever hear of respecting your elders
Anyhow, yes he does deserve the crap for driving a CAB... but he promised he was looking for a GT3. He really is looking
You guys are funny. Love the site!!!!!
ALL PORSCHE DRIVERS ARE OLD FAT AND BOLD.....AND YES THEY ARE ALL POOR POSERS.....NOT ABLE TO AFFORD A FERRARI!!
this should start a whole other debate!!
Hey! The CAB was a compromise with the wife. She wanted a Boxster, I wanted a 996Coupe, so we got the 996CAB to satisfy both. Cuz when the wife is satisfied the man IS satisfied
The true sign of a poseur is how you treat your key. Do you leave it in your pocket or do you lay it on a counter with the crest side up (or with a crest key fob clearly visible)? Uh huh, I thought so . . . poseur.
No.
You actually have to be making money off of racing/tracking to truly be a non-poser. Else, it's just another hobby that anyone can take up if they had the desire to do so.
Now that's funny!
Some young secretary and clerk came into my office one day and one of them out of the blue picked up my keys and said "You have a Porsche!?" I ignored her and continued talking to the other secretary(the prey).
Personally, I think the whale tail spoilers from the old days kick the new 75mph lift ups *** any day. I almost think it is just another marketing ploy by Porsche to give the car an ugly smallish electric spoiler to make money on tequipment aero kits.
Those old "Whale Tail" spoilers do give downforce, but keep in mind that wind tunnels and modeling software have drastically improved technology. A 996 Carrera has a .30 drag coefficient versus the .39 of those big spoiler 911's of yore. Todays cars have far lower lift and far improved aerodynamics of those cars of yore. This is not olny from the bodywork, but the underbody too. If there isn't as much lift, you don't need as much downforce; so yes the spoiler doesn't need to be as large to achieve the desired effect. The spoiler only deploys when it is needed to improve stability and reducing drag at lower speeds where it is not needed. Have you noticed that the 996 spoiler deploys at a higher speed than the 964 or 993 spoilers? Why? Improved aerodynamics. The 997 spoiler deploys to a lower height than the 996 for reduced drag and still achieving the desired effect. This does not mean that those big whale tails are good to look.
Since the new spoilers don't stick out when the car's going slow the government doesn't require the ugly rubber edge (when they're up you're going fast and hopefully nowhere near pedestrians). German logic.
