Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I removed the bumper and found this. The other rod (what ever its call) does not have any scraping on it. Do you think this car has hit something with its bumper? When I bought the car I knew the bumper had been repainted when I had the PPI done, but was told it had not been in an accident. As far as I can tell it's the orginal bumper

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Would you say it's a "hard hit" or maybe a "roll into" being that it's the only side Crap

POST 4Original post

who knows.....sometimes it is better not to look to hard to find things....you already bought the car and now you are pissed....you can't give it back.....so keep on driving and enjoying the Porsche!! whipe the scraping away and reset your mind till before the bumper removal!

POST 5Original post

First, based on the picture I don't believe it has been in a bad accident. The picture of the part you are looking at is the "impact absorber". It is basically a shock to absorb low-speed impacts. The fact that it compressed and bounced back leads me to believe that there was a low speed impact (parking low speeds). Harder impacts would normally break the absorber and bend the frame. By the rub pattern around the center shaft it appears to be pretty uniform suggesting a straight on hit.

POST 6 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Well, when I bought the car from the Prosche dealer I went over the inspection sheet and walked around the car with the service mgt so that he could explain any questions I had. I asked about the bumper and he stated it only was repainted and was not because of an accident. What really pisses me off is you would think to look for front end damage if the bumper has been repainted. My guess is they did Oh well it could be worse, I need a beer maybe a couple

POST 7Original post

Here is a simple test - Find someone with a PST2 (or PIWIS tester) - look at the engine operating hours and then look at the air bag operating hours. If the engine hours are much longer than the airbag hours - chances are the airbag has been replaced.

POST 8 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Loren YOU ROCK Tomorrow I will be contributing to renntech. Now I have to find a person with the pst2????

POST 9Original post

The dealers have this...not many personal ones or even indies as these are exensive to purchase and maintain (requires annual updates).

POST 10Original post

There is a fellow in our club that makes code readers that read the codes from Porsches. I had a bad seat belt / airbag connector and he was able to read the code from my car's computer. It told me that the passenger seat had the faulty connection. This is a somewhat common problem. My airbag light had come on in my dash display. He was able to reset my display with his device also. However, it activated again but only after my wife sat in the passenger seat. This fellow's name is Durham Plummer. email is [email removed]

POST 11Original post

You know, I am betting that it was not a bad hit at all. After all, if it had been a bad hit, that bumper part would have been the first thing to be replaced. How does your car drive? Does it align properly? Are you wearing tires abnormally? If all "seems" well, than it is well. Know what I mean?

POST 13 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Car drives great... I did get a deal of a life time Drove 7 different 911 all different years and this one drove better than any of them. The car springs back from bumps and has great feed back while on the road. Had align done before I bought it and drives straight. Car has a minor tracking problem when I encounter certain road changes, but tires need to be replaced in the next couple thousand miles and the tread is wearing normally. Yes all seems well its just that I took the dam bumper off and now I know and when I go to sell it i a couple of years I will have to disclose this find. If I can find it anyone can Thanks for the info. I found his company that sells the Porsche Diagnostic Tool. I will call another dealer and ask what the cost would be to read the info for me or I will buy the tester.

POST 14Original post

I wouldn't even check the PS-2. You own the car and what you show in the pic looks like the previous owner bumped into something gently. While the bumper had to be repainted, the car was not damaged in any significant way or else you would see evidence of other parts being replaced including the shock absorber that you show. Try to get it out of your mind and enjoy the car. It sounds like you love it, and got a great deal. Sometimes, it's better to leave things as they are and not dig too deep (although I belive you have nothing to worry about with this issue).

POST 15Original post

From the looks of the shock absorber, the car was involved in a front end collision around 30mph... seen it before.

POST 16Original post

If that is all that happened in a 30 mph collision I would be shocked. I would expect to see evidence of a lot more being replaced or bent/damaged parts for a 30 mph collision. I bet it was more like 10-15 mph. Of course, both of us are just guessing. In any event, if the car is driving well like he says it is, then this whole discussion really is, well, irrelevant.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

OK. So I went to the dealer today an had them read the air bag and engine hours. Engine Hours: 1575 Air Bag Hours: 5473 To me this would indicate a new engine some time ago I have 50,000 miles on the car right now The dealer never stated the engine being newer? When you put a new motor in does the Odometer start at zero? I now think I can sleep at night now I now can sell the car in the future and show the buyer the info I now have. That being said I feel a lot better

POST 18Original post

Interesting. I did not know about this air bag hours. Maybe Loren knows how it is determined, unless it is the same as engine operating hours. The engine operating hours are stored in the DME. When a replacement engine goes in the DME operating hours is not set to zero. Or, in my case, I had the DME replaced when my Boxster was 8 years old. My original DME has 1,622 operating hours (I still have the original engine). When the new DME went in I had zero operating hours on an 8 year old car. The next owner of my car may wonder why I have over 60,000 miles on the odometer, but very few engine operation hours, unless they search the Porsche computer and find out the DME was replaced.

POST 19 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I know the airbag hours start from when the key is turn to acc. You how see a larger airbag hour but I don't think you would see a 4000 hour difference That makes since with the DME starting over when it is replaced but why or how could I have 5000+ hours on the air bag?

POST 20Original post

Maybe the previous owner replaced the ECU to get "tuned" and then replaced the stock ECU prior to sale? Either way, I wouldn't worry. Drive and enjoy!

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Not worried anymore. I'm going to go drive it right now... To autozone Need more wax

POST 22Original post

5,473 is a lot of hours. Your engine operating hours is about right for a car with 50k miles. Maybe the ignition key was left on for a few months. Just a joke. I really don't know. I'll have to ask Peter Smith why this air bag figure appears in it's face to be so high. Are you positive about the air bag firure? I did not know about an air bag figure until today.

POST 23 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Yes, I had the dealer give me a print out. Also just to keep things civil I went to a different porsche dealer than the one I bought it from.

POST 24Original post

Sucks that the dealer may have mislead you, but if there is no other visible damage - eg. stress cracks in the paint on the frame, visible frame damage, car tracks straight, etc. you should be o.k. As others have pointed out, it is a shock absorber and it did what it was supposed to do - never nice to whack a p-car though. In higher speed impacts they often leak so this was likely in the 10 mph area I would think. If you can get in at the back side of your bumper cover, you'll likely be able to see if was repaired.

POST 25Original post

The air bag hours are in the air bag control unit. The engine operating hours are in the DME. This is what may have happened. When you turn the key on but do not start the car, the air bag counter starts. When you turn off a running car with the key but do not remove the key the air bag counter is still going because the air bag system is operational until the key is removed. So perhaps the prior owner had a habit of not removing the key all the time after the engine was turned off and in a garage. You would usually end up with a dead battery after a while, but maybe there was a fresh battery or a maintainer. For grins, Peter checked a Cayman in the shop with 3k miles on it. The engine operating hours was 137.4. The air bag was 162.9. All just an educated guess.

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks for looking into this for me. If you do the math my air bag miles per hour are half that of the Cayman
