Suggestion
Some small cutting required to make them fit in the doors enclosures and the dash frames, also running new wires to the dash speakers as the focals are components.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The sound system in my new to me 2001 C4 sounds like crap. What are the weak-links in this system or does everything need to be replaced? I'm not looking for top-end sound just something that sounds decent when the top is down.
Any thoughts?
TIA
Jeff
I think you can do much better with just about any aftermarket system.
Maybe look at getting a head unit with a Nav system like the Eclipse
http://www.eclipse-web.com/avn-index.html
That's a pretty sweet unit!
Is there an amp buried somewhere in the car or does all the power come from the head unit? Also, is the general consensus that that speaker all have to go?
Thanks for the input, riad.
Jeff
Riad,
I have noticed in your pics, the hardtop seems to be a lighter grey then the rest of the car. Is that so? If so, is it intentional? I think it looks great! Just wondering if that was personal creativity, digital error or something that is standard from the factory.
I don't know if there is an amp, but I think so - in the trunk maybe? I think the speakers suck too.
I'm seriously considering the Eclipse unit, satellite, map3, nav, dvd - it's all good.
No, the hardtop is the same color, Seal Grey. It must be the pictures, I think the grey looks different depending on where the light is hitting it.

Hi,
In regard to speakers, fitting aftermarket is a right paid. Focal drop in but are expensive.
I have discovered new plate speakers from audiobahn and Infinity. They are a 6" x 4" rectangular base with a 3" or 4" mid fitted and a seperate tweeter and because they are fitted on a base you can cut the base to the tear drop shape you need and they fit straight in after cutting and you drill a couple of holes in the plate for the speaker grill screws and job done.
Make sure the ones you get are no deeper than the standard speakers for the front as there is a bar inthe way but by the rear seats go as deep as you like.
I couldn't get the Infinity's in the UK but did get the Audiobahn, they are a bit quieter (no amp yet) but definite improvement in sound quanlity.
and best of all for you guys in the states less than a $100 a pair.

If you have the Digital Sound Control panel in your dash stack (hifi, classical, pop, etc), then there is an amp on the wall of the trunk, just behind your spare tire, slightly to the passenger side of the battery.
If you are replacing it all, and currently have a CDR-220, I would be interested in buying it (dash portion only) to offset your upgrade cost. PM me.
Decided to do this in stages by myself and I've choosen the Alpine CDA-9856 as the head unit and now I've got to decide on the speakers themselves. O course I get a different answer as to what I should get (and what size they are) for each person I've asked but I'll get it nailed down soon enough.
Thanks for the help,
Jeff
I might be interested in starting with an upgrade to the speakers and the amp, but leaving the stock CDR-220 appearance (I also have the DSP panel in the center console). Is it possible to upgrade just the stock amp and speakers?
Definitely start with the speakers, they are the weakest link. A new head unit or amp won't do much with the stock speakers. I used focals, 100KPs for the dash and 5WS for the doors. Some small cutting required to make them fit in the doors enclosures and the dash frames, also running new wires to the dash speakers as the focals are components. spliced into the exisitng wires at the amp. The new speakers made an incredible difference. Next I am intalling a 6 channel JL Audio 6350 amp, but I am not really planning on replacing the head unit, I like the stock apperance in the interior.
There are numerous threads here with lots of details on how to do this, just do a search. If you would like some additional help/details let me know.
