Suggestion
Second version of Tip to put in correct volume of fluid need infrarred thermometer, trans must be at exact temp range when checking level.

Suggestion
Also I recommend if the car had a checked maintenance past to just rebase and commit to the doing the whole job of replacing the fluid, the filter and all the O-rings, and the Tiptronic pan seal.

I bet $100 you will not be able to put that amount back in to the gearbox using the little fill plug on the side.

After the pan drop and clean up, new filter and reseal, just change out the oil a few more times and you will have mostly fresh fluid in the whole system.

Coverage and how to read this overview
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.
24 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

Hey all.. just picked up a 2000 996 Tiptronic not knowing the hype surrounding the IMS bearing, went to get a quote for " the solution" at a specialist shop and was quoted $5800 for the job, but that did include the RMS and AOS, still too much to invest in this caras it has a checkered past and I already paid too much for it. Ive decided to try to tackle the job myself and make this a winter project. Still have a million questions before I commit and for now I wanted to change out my tranny fluid bc I think its low on fluid. I drained the pan and the fluid was looking pretty bad and only yielded about 5 liters, this seems a little light in volume.. could the torque converter have the rest?
Thanks ahead of time, and I look forward to becoming well versed in Porsche maintenance
Your car probably has a dual row IMS bearing, though it's not guaranteed. The dual row bearing is much more robust than the single row. What is the month of manufacture? (Look for a sticker on the edge of your driver' door.) Some people say not to mess with the transmission fluid but if yours is low and looks bad you had no choice. I think there is a write-up for the fluid change on Renntech.org.
Beautiful looking car! If you decide to do the IMS you'll probably need to get the car higher than that. You need it high enough to get the transmission out from under it. I forget the exact height I needed but I posted a thread a few years ago when I did the project and went into some of the detail, I believe I documented it there.
Congrats and welcome.
What do you mean by checkered past?
$5800.00 is not a bad price for the Solution and all the work that's listed. The trans and motor need/should be dropped together with a TIP.
The tiptronic equipped car must have its engine and gearbox removed from the car in order to service the IMS. That is because the larger Mercedes gearbox is attached via an interface plate and that can only be removed with the drivetrain on the ground. You will need to have the car jacked up quite a bit more than that, but you sound capable. The quote of $5800 seems like a lot until you realize that the cost of the Solution parts is $2,000, and it involves the removal of the engine and gearbox.
As for the double row bearing being robust, hm, a month ago I removed one from a car and held the IMS bearing in my hand. It was wobbling at the center shaft. Clearly that was bad. The car also had 80,000 miles at the time, so clearly it disproved the myth that "If it hasn't happened by xx,xxx miles, it's not going to happen."
For the Tipt fluid level. I drained out 5 liters from my Tipt box too. That is all you can get out because the torque converter has the rest. I bet $100 you will not be able to put that amount back in to the gearbox using the little fill plug on the side. I was only successful in putting all the fluid back using the top fill plug (the factory fill plug).
Good luck, have fun.
89redgt, welcome to the 996 club. Welcome to the Tip realm also but first and foremost congratulations on the purchase of the new to you 996. Nice ride and great looking garage too, every time I see the epoxy flooring it reminds me to get cracking on the back burner project of two Rust-Oleum Clear shield boxes of the garage floor kits i have in my garage. I need to commit and lay them down already. Then top it off with the QuickJack Portable Car Lift from Pelican, Lol..
To answer your question yes 5 L is not the total amount of fluid contained in our cars if I'm not mistaken it is 9 L, so the rest is in the converter and small amounts in the ATF cooler & associated piping. Also I recommend if the car had a checked maintenance past to just rebase and commit to the doing the whole job of replacing the fluid, the filter and all the O-rings, and the Tiptronic pan seal.
Thanks for the reply and liink.
manufacture is 02/00.. the trans was making a low fluid clunk every once in a while and the pan gasket and output shaft area was leaking quite a bit.
We started our Porsche experience by obtaining reference material; Bentley manual and Wayne's 101 projects book, 2 Porsche service manuals on pdf (unfortunately neither have working table of contents), and read this forum and others.
996 model 911s have two different Tip transmissions, second version have to drop engine to get out ISB not sure about your first version. Body has to be raised 22-25" off ground to get out engine, remove rear bumper to get more clearance. At least one expert recommends considering leaving ISB in place because when installing new one if thin outer race is squeezed or distorted it can cause new bearing failure.
Second version of Tip to put in correct volume of fluid need infrarred thermometer, trans must be at exact temp range when checking level. Your first version tran might have same procedure consult your reference material. Also use torque wrench on most fasteners because values may be much lower than you expect and can easily strip.
Thanks for the info. Ive got the ZF transmission and read the posts about changing the fluid, looks like a pain but doable once I get all of the parts. I just ordered the 101 projects book off amazon, which should help a lot.
That's what I thought was the consensus here on the forum. 996.1 Tip can be removed without the engine, and 996.2 Tip has to be removed with the engine. Sorry I don't have time to search for the threads that state this.
ZF has a pretty good video on YouTube on changing fluid, worth a look. But yes about 5 liters come out with every drain and as stated above the level must be checked in the proper temp range and after cycling through the gears. It's fiddlie job but take your time and do it right.
After the pan drop and clean up, new filter and reseal, just change out the oil a few more times and you will have mostly fresh fluid in the whole system.
Are you sure the noise you here isnt the transmission mount?
The one on my Tip were completely shot and every so often I would get a Thunk on heavy acceleration....new mount & powerflex inserts and its completely cured.
Total cost about $150 but obviously no cure for IMS😄
