Why something so simple like the old reliable manual hood cable mechanisms were changed over to electric actuators is beyond me.

I must admit the Anti-Gravity jumper sounds like a powerful and reliable unit and probably worth the cost, it's most likely a exception to what I have witnessed in the past.

PT3, I think the OP's first question concerns using a lithium jump box connected to the retractable connector in the fuse box, which is isolated to the frunk mechanism alone.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Yes, it worked on the frunk (on someone else's car), but I've jumped everything from 944T race cars, to big V8 trucks with it.

So, I hear all the problems in getting the frunk open should the battery go dead. I'm thinking about buying one of those small lithium ion car boosters to keep in the cabin should the battery go dead and I need to open frunk at fuse box then jumper car. I hate carrying around extra stuff....So then I have a thought. Would a 9volt battery properly attached to alligator clips have enough power to pop the frunk? Anyone have a frunk solenoid they could try direct? Do you think this approach would damage anything? Thoughts?

POST 2Original post

The 9v battery will operate a frunk solenoid if that's the only "work" it is tasked to do. The problem with using this as a means to open the frunk on a car with a dead battery is there will be many more "consumers" fighting for the juice of the 9v battery , and not enough juice left to operate the frunk solenoid. It will take about 20amps of current to feed all the consumers and memories (ROM and all interior lighting before it powers down)and still have enough power to operate the frunk solenoid. Something about the power of a battery powered 12v drill would do it, you could put a cig lighter plug on the 12v drill battery and charge it once in a while, then if needed, plug it into the lighter to give enough juice to pop the frunk..

POST 3Original post

I know this one does NOT work for opening the frunk due to the "intelligent" built-in protections: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06W2LRQNR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06W2LRQNR/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_asin_title_o01_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1 Bought it a couple years ago, so not sure if you'll have better success with newer models. Works great for everything else.

POST 4Original post

Is something wrong with your emergency frunk cable? Jump starts are better from the engine should your battery die.

PT3, I think the OP's first question concerns using a lithium jump box connected to the retractable connector in the fuse box, which is isolated to the frunk mechanism alone. While a standard battery charger won't do the trick, I'm betting the device he's talking about will. You're absolutely correct re the inadequacy of something as meager as a 9v battery, even connected directly to that lug.

POST 6Original post

The OP didn't actually ask a question about the Lithium jump box, his question was about if a 9v would do the job. Maybe the answer I gave was TMI, but I didn't want to just say ,NO...lol I've never been a fan of any of the small jump boxes, ever since they came out way before the lithium ones and the techs have spent hundreds/thousands of $$$ on them and the dealerships/shops have also bought many of them, alot of times they didn't do the job, and last about a year if that long. I have always had a REAL battery(with custom made jump cables permanently attached) that I kept maintained that would last for 5-7 years and when the "little jump boxes" failed, they always come to borrow my real battery jumper, it never failed to jump a car. Car Salesmen and the other Techs would bitch and moan about it being too heavy to tote out to jump off a car, but would eventually come with pie on their face to ask to borrow it. Personally I would never buy any of the jump boxes, just a real good set of jumper cables, and expect to pay more than 50 bucks for a decent set (at least a 4 gauge) and keep one in every car. If I were worried about getting into the frunk, I would make sure to locate the emergency cable and have it accessible.

POST 7Original post

Doc, you might want to have a look at the newer lithium jump packs like one from a forum sponsor like Anti-Gravity. I've had their one since they came out, maybe 11-12 years ago. Yes, it worked on the frunk (on someone else's car), but I've jumped everything from 944T race cars, to big V8 trucks with it. It even bailed me out in a hurricane when power was out to keep phones charged for communication and entertainment. Charge it once, maybe twice a year depending on usage. My reliable little friend, sadly, finally passed away this past summer. After a touching goodbye, I contacted Anti-Gravity and got a new one. Whole kit with charger, booster, all the adaptors to charge nearly anything all fits in a tidy little case in glovebox. FYI, I also have a full size battery in the garage charged and ready as well, but I can't say enough good about the little cup start kit.

I've had an anti gravity portable jumper for years, and have used it to jump many things, including a BMW boxer motorcycle. My brother has used his to open the frunk. I will say call them if you want to jump a Harley Davidson, they will tell you which to get but it basically takes the largest one to do it.

I watched a video on YouTube about routing the manual release cable behind the rear bumper skin. Works great. Don't even need to remove the rear wheels. I've read so many threads about people unsuccessfully trying to use the fuse box 12V connect or the electric actuators are defective. Why something so simple like the old reliable manual hood cable mechanisms were changed over to electric actuators is beyond me. I know people will respond with ... "It's because of the security systems and remote release convenience!"

POST 10Original post

Don't you have to remove the wheel well cover to get to it?

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 16302097

Nope, driver's side rear wheel on my 996 doesn't have the liner that blocks the exhaust and so it's just about removing a few fasteners on the rear bumper skin and pulling back the bumper skin. I routing the manual cable through a little port behind the rear tail light. Pretty straight forward.

POST 12Original post

Isn't that the engine lid release, not the frunk?

POST 13Original post

Quotes source post: 16302182

Yes. Then there is a proper + jump terminal in the engine compartment if the battery is dead. I also have my front "frunk" manual release cable in an easy to reach access point. Some people put it in the tow hook port and connect it with fishing line to the tow hook cap. Not me.

Not a Dumb Idea at all......and it HAS been tested by me. First thanks for the Positive comments by some of the Rennlisters on here, we appreciate it. Now about the 9v Battery for the Frunk, as Porschetech stated the 9v will be drawn on by a number of other electrical systems in the Car, but on each of my testes it did NOT WORK. And the reason is because I found the Current necessary to engage the Frunk switch was showing between 4 to 9 amps on each attempt and the 9v battery in its tiny form factor did not have the capacity to flip the switch and unlock the frunk. It just too small to put out higher current. So the reason I tried this was because the first day of owning my Porsche I locked myself out of the frunk!.... I put one of our older versions of the Lithium Starter Batteries in my CAr and forgot to turn the battery on, then after realizing it tried to open the frunk and couldn't. So I freaked out thinking I had done something wrong then came across tons of threads of others being locked out of the frunk. So I tried the 9v thing... then tried some other stuff like power to the cig lighter socket (don't do that because wiring is to small in gauge size). So I settled on a Harness kit that would work with our MICRO-START mini Jump Starters or most the other brands. Then we also developed the Battery with Wireless built-in Jump Starting to eliminate this problem all together. So this jump Starting Harness allows you to just plug a mini Lithium Jump Starter into it and then your car will have full energy to flip the Frunk Switch or Jump Start the Car. Below is the series of photo of it connected then ran behind the plastic up to the corner of the hood where it can be tucked away... https://antigravitybatteries.com/pro...s-msa10b-long/ Then of course we have the Battery with WIRELESS Built-In Jump Starting also... here >> https://antigravitybatteries.com/pro...tive/ag-h6-rs/

POST 16 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

So, the idea here was to have something in the car, about the size of a cassette case that could be used to open the frunk without having to remove wheel well covers, or the bumper plug etc. I remember my 1988 mustang had a nylon cable velcroed to the trunk floor to open the power release for the fuel door. Simple and because it was there, it would never be necessary. I will be moving the emergency release to the bumper plug...
