The material I'm using isn't "powder coated" for aesthetics, but it's certainly industrial grade.

I'm lucky that my back garage has no ceiling, so I can use the exposed trusses.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Anybody got an idea of what the hardtop weighs? I was going to buy a hoist off of eBay ($199-ouch), but ended up making my own, out of a winch, PVC (2 1/2"), and ratchet straps, for about $35. It's more unwieldy, but I'm not sure about the weight. I'll take some pix, plus new car pix and bio due as soon as I get a minute. thanks!

POST 3 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks Dell. I couldn't imagine it weighing more than one hundred. It's just so out of balance.

POST 4Original post

Welcome FYI ...... I don't remember where I found the info on the wieght (somewhere on the Porsche website) and I didn't beleive it so I physically carried my bathroom scale down to the garage, weighed myself, then myself with the top and subtracting the 2. And it was exactly as PCNA reported.......74#

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Sounds like a lot of work I'm quite proud of engineering an alternative, just by looking at the one for sale on eBay. Supposedly, that one would allow for "indefinite suspension", but I'm a little leery about that, without a safety strap. I'm lucky that my back garage has no ceiling, so I can use the exposed trusses. I even added two vertical supports, to help bear the weight.

POST 6Original post

Hi Bill As I am thinking of doing one myself it would really help with a few pics. Thanks

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Will do! Probably tomorrow, though.

POST 8Original post

Here in Ca, a hardtop is a total waste of money. I am sure it will protect the softtop from snow and salt attacks though. As for hoist, make sure it's can stop securely. You don't want the hard top dropping on the car or your noggins even with the padding inside. I'd opt for a commercial grade one.

POST 9Original post

I agree, for this I'd spend the extra $150 to save myself from possibly thousands in damages if it fell.

POST 10Original post

when you can just stick the hardtop in the closet?

POST 11Original post

Yeah, and if you keep it polished like Gary does, it can "double" as a mirror!

POST 12Original post

NOt for a complete hijack, but, would Porsche Exclusive put a sunroof in your hardtop? Just thinking that one cold, but sunny winter days, having a bit of glass overhead might be nice.

POST 13Original post

I'm sure Porsche exclusive would not, but an aftermarket sunroof shop could probably accomplish this fairly easily.

POST 14 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

"Commercial" top hoist or not, I would never trust one of these alone. I have safety straps holding the top in place to the rafters as well. The winch that I bought at the Harbor Freight Store has many times more capacity than the marketed one, and the pvc will have a "crush" strength (not exactly applicable due to the minimal amount of deflection, but I digress), that is well over 1000 lbs./lin. ft. The material I'm using isn't "powder coated" for aesthetics, but it's certainly industrial grade. My home grown model is definitely stronger than what I've seen advertised on eBay. Of course, care should always be taken when suspending any item (bike, snow blower, etc.) overhead! I do like the "top in the closet", LOL!

This is a source reference. Confirm exact model applicability in the original material.
