Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

(on cars newer than mine, that is how the car knows to adjust the seats to each key holder).

They use a laptop computer loaded, with Porsche's proprietary software of course, and the program has only four "slots" for keys, and the tech mentioned that the 996 can be programmed for up to four keys.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

4 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

  • Rennlist: 1 discussions

0 evidence records excluded for query context · 0 excluded by outcome qualification · 0 adjusted by outcome qualification.

0 acknowledgements have no verified action link; they do not establish a repair result.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Is there a limited amount of key copies that can be made before having to change out the ECU? I'm curious because Mercedes Benz has a limit of 8 or 10.

POST 2Original post

If I understand your question correctly, the answer is "no". For MY00 (the car I am familiar with), the car's ECU has a limit of 5 key immobilizers (or transponders) that it will register and recognize at any one time. Each of these 5 keys is recognized as distinctly different. (on cars newer than mine, that is how the car knows to adjust the seats to each key holder). Part of the service manual process for mating a new key is to eliminate any currently unused keys from the ECU's memory. This is especially important if one has lost a key. So, as far as I understand, one could keep erasing old keys and adding new ones (assuming your money holds out) for as many times as one wishes.

POST 3Original post

When I had an extra key made at an independent shop, I was able to watch the process. They use a laptop computer loaded, with Porsche's proprietary software of course, and the program has only four "slots" for keys, and the tech mentioned that the 996 can be programmed for up to four keys.

POST 4Original post

996 and 986 can each hold 4 keys, u can program them limit less times, as long as all the keys are not lost while the alarm is active, in that case the alarm ecu is toast.
