Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am trying to help my girlfriend buy a 2002 Boxster S. She currently has a 2001 Boxster. I found this car in Louiville which is only about 1.5 hours away. Below is the CARFAX. Given the current state of affairs with Arrogant, being leary of salespeople right now is an understatement. Unfortunately, I think I am already being fibbed to. The owner, since he has no salespeople, said it was a perfect car, purchased in a "special" PA auction ( where he says he gets all his nice P-cars) No issues, very clean, 12,000 miles, etc, etc, etc. I think he even said it was a car driven by someone at PORSCHE. After I hung up, I went to CARFAX. Below you will see the results. I called him today to "check in" and ask, just by chance, if he knew of any paint work or body damage just to see what he said. After I got the usual, " well, no, I dont think so, looks very clean......blah, blah, blah. It immediately felt like "Part 3, The Arrogant Sequel" I also then asked if it was a P-car factory car, why was it leased in New Jersey.....blah, blah, blah. Then the story changed a bit to the "special" inviatation that he and other dealers get to come to PA for an auction, had only PORSCHES. He told me he was going to call a local body shop that he uses to come out and check it out and faxx me the report. Said he would be good to have it on file anyhow ( think this should have already been his plan of action without me asking) . My gut is something is way too fishy, but she likes the car. If anyone has any ideas of 1) is it possible for a true Factory car to be leased in Jersey and wind up in a PA auction?, 2) Any way to tell the body issues? I know it could be anything from a fender repaint to a total body redo. The price, which is fairly low for the mileage and options, includes a warranty! Any help would be greatly appreciated as she is a ready-NOW BUYER!!! POST 3Original post

If you'd like, I'll run by tomorrow and look at it for you, plus take some better pictures. I'm no expert, but I will certainly look for body panel alignment, paint tone differences, etc. If I did go by, I'm simply going to tell them I'm looking at it on your behalf, if that's okay by you. Also, I have a great relationship with the local dealer (Bluegrass Porsche) and can give you the intro / hand off to the right people if you decide to get a PPI done in town before purchase. Let me know.... Mark Bos Forgot to add... Bluegrass has this cool handheld paint thickness tester. At a minimum, I'm sure they would check to see if any panels had been painted for free.

POST 4 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Mark I would LOVE you to do that. My girl REALLY wants that car. I will send you a PM THANKS!

POST 6Original post

Well... The car doesn't look too bad, but not sure I'd pay 33k for it. Just a little rough in my opinion for a 2002 w/ 12K. Body lines (gaps) all appear to line up and the hood looks like it should be adjusted a little bit lower. Overall the paint looks even and it has scratches in about 4-5 places. The latter pictures are close-ups I tried to take of the scratches. Interior is clean with some scratches on the painted center console area. The wear is due to seat belt buckles and another "unknown cause" wear area on the passenger side / ashtray area of the console. The passenger side climate display LCD is disfigured, or "melted", as you can see a bubble across the display (see pic). Both seats look good and not overly worn. The passenger seat looks like it had something (box, etc.) sitting in for a while recently. There was nothing in the seat when I arrived. Front and rear trunk looks good. The front has an unknown stain in the floor area (see pic) and the carpet feels stiff. Almost like something caustic spilled (bleach maybe) and discolored and ate the carpet a little bit. As for the underside, it looks pretty clean from the pictures and there is some "parking block opps" scratches underneath the nose. All just my opinion / perspective the pictures should give you a better idea. I hope that helps you and let me know if you have other questions... POST 9Original post

Bos - VERY nice of you to do that for QC_Carerra4! Great write-up and pics! Well DOne!

POST 10 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

A huge thumbs up to Bos and to RENNLIST. Bos' Private Dick work today helped me NOT buy the car my girl wanted so badly. A full repaint with 12k miles along with some other issues. As I have quickly learned in the spirit of RENNLIST, Bos volunteered, sleuthed, photographed AND posted my potential car all in the same day. Beyond impressive Thanks again to you Bos to to RENNLIST! I have already told multiple people what he did and no one can believe some I dont know from a website would go look at a car for me AND send me photos with commentary. I told them until you own a PORSCHE and join RENNLIST, you never will.

POST 11Original post

There is a paint thickness gauge that can be used to tell the thickness of paint. I have been told that a repaint will come out thicker than factory. The dealers should have this gauge.

POST 12Original post

Just walk away from it and find another car. There is always another one. Just be patient and the right one will come along.

POST 13Original post

Thanks for the compliments gang and it was really somthing I was more than happy to do. Just another complete car nut guy to the core and glad to help "pay it forward" with my fellow Rennlisters!!
