Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

0 discussions have direct query context; 0 report a fix in that context. Other evidence may inherit the discussion’s subject.

Suggestion

The risk of a blown engine and RMS might be higher than with a BMW....but if anything goes wrong replacing any engine is going to cost you!

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

11 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

After reading the tRennlist hread on blown engines and this posting at the Porsche roadfly board: http://forums.roadfly.com/forums/por...7762919-1.html where the guy wants to file a class action law suit I am paranoid. I am about to close on a Porsche dealer CPO'd '99 cab with 30k miles and I think I am going to bag. Are the 2000 or 2001 cars supoose to be better? Was anything actually changed. This reminds me of the BMW M3 fiasco where BMW denied any wrong doing until enough owners complained. Why doesn't Porsche do the same?

POST 2Original post

Don't be a sissy. They are far and few between. You read about because people post negatives and seek assistance or likeness. They're not posting the good times. Take with a grain of salt. Blah blah blah. Did I destroy any cliches? I usually do................................

POST 3Original post

CPO'd car isn't good enough for you? All NA 996's are the same design with the exception of the GT3. Maybe you should go buy a Miata instead if an internet posting makes you that nervous.

POST 4Original post

Out of curiosity, can a '99 really have that much balance of the CPO left? I have an '00, and I think I've got ~1yr left.

POST 5Original post

You should balance the amount of info you get on a forum. Usually people don't post on rennlist unless they have a problem (otherwise they're out driving ). The 99's really arn't the abismal end of the porsche world, after all the people who post about engine problems are only a small % of 99 owners. I track mine hard and street driveit quite hard and it has been no trouble. Literally, no problems other than routine maintenance, problem's I've caused experimenting, or cheap factory plastics braking off (who needs a vanity mirror anyhow).

POST 6Original post

I've had my 99 for a lil over three years, I've had normal wear and tear problems with it- but nothing too serious. But man I still love it, it's an awesome feeling to drive it. Every time I park it where ever it's at- I look at it not once, but twice...

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am assuming that it is a standard 2 year warranty. Maybe I better confirm this.

POST 8Original post

get the september issue of excellence...full review of the 996 run

POST 9Original post

OOOOOhhh I am going to poop my pants right now....I got a 99 .......with 66K miles......I have to run to the garage and check if the engine is still in on piece after driving it today.....also have to check if I don't have a RMS... but seriously: With cars you just have to get lucky...... a PPI can help you, in the end it is also how you drive the P! The risk of a blown engine and RMS might be higher than with a BMW....but if anything goes wrong replacing any engine is going to cost you! I rather pay 15K for a new engine in a P than 11K for a new engine in a BMW!

POST 10Original post

Buy a warranty, about the only thing stopping me selling my 99 now is that it's cost me another 15k to get an 02 or better with CPO, apparently no warranty companies will cover a 996 anymore. My situation is 1) Buy a disposable 944 2) Buy a 02 996 with CPO for an extra 15k but reality is these are as likely to fail as the 99s so little point in upgrading for whats basically a new car now. 3) Sell the kids and get a GT3 which has a 'proper' engine 4) Keep the bloody thing now that it has 2 years from factory on recond DME, tranny and engine and 3 years left on the extended warranty company. I like 911s so I'll likely doing 4 although my friends say I'm nuts and should dump it and do #1.

POST 11Original post

you can't go back to a 944...I had one and they are great, but once you have driven a 911 there is no way back! (unless the 928, but this is very personal...I always loved the 928!!) it is impossible to get a 99 996 insured.....maybe a younger version...I have tried and the only company who did warrant'ied" it is now in liquidation....screwed me out of 2K!! Selling the kids...I think is the best option....and if they want a 11yr old PIA....I got one!!! will sell for 996 C4S (don't tell his mother!!!) SO #4 it is........keep on keeping on.......driving and try to become a big spender within the next 3 years.....so you can buy a newer "problem"!!!
