I used the Bosch h7 in a couple of other cars - so far no issues - the issue with premature battery fails in my 996 turned out to be bad alternator diodes - allowing the battery to drain when the car was off.

Agree - always check the "born on" date that's on the battery - you want one that is fresh - so for a purchase today, look for one that has a January 2018 date.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Although the p/n has been superseded to 99961108021 at $311 from Auto Atlanta, still not cheap
i have had my car for almost 18 years now and over that time I have replaced the battery several times. In 2013 I bought a new Bosch battery from PepBoys. About 2 years or so it was not holding a charge ell. I took the battery to PepBoys and when they tested it the test showed it had a bad cell and the gave me a new one under warranty. Then for the last 6 months or more my car has been very slow to start, particularly after the first start. I thought it might be the starter. Then a week ago it started in the garage but the battery was dead after my second start. I looked in my computer and saw the purchase in 2013 but had forgotten the warranty replacement so took the battery back to PepBoys to have it tested assuming if it was bad I would have to buy a new one as the warranty was full replacement for 36 months.
The women working at the counter looked at the sticker on the battery saying it was shipped in January 2015 and said if it was shipped in 2015 then it must have been February 2015 when I got it so it was still under warranty. I asked if they wanted to test it and she said she would if I wanted them to but why bother as they would give me a new one under the warranty. So I have a new battery marked shipped January 2018 that hold a charges and turns the car over like new.
So ffor one purchase I am now on my third battery which is covered for another 36 months. Now I would prefer that the batteries lasted a lot longer, sure. But if they have problems every 30-36 months in perpetuity and they keep giving me new batteries under warranty thats not too bad. I think I will set myself a reminder in 30 months to check the battery and maybe just get it replaced😎
I used the Bosch h7 in a couple of other cars - so far no issues - the issue with premature battery fails in my 996 turned out to be bad alternator diodes - allowing the battery to drain when the car was off. I'm using Diehard AGM in the 996. Worth checking what the battery voltage reads on the new battery after a few days parked and/or seeing if the alternator is warm to the touch after leaving the car overnight. Once I fixed the alternator - battery holds charge for 2 weeks + - no issues.
I used a Pep Boys Bosche battery to replace the 7-yr-Old original battery in my wifes BMW X3. The replacement didnt last a year.
The problem with some of these battery places is that batteries (particularly low demand items) can sit on the shelf for a long time, which is not good for the health of a battery.

Reminds me of the JC Penny "forever" battery that came in my 1st car when I was 17. Guarrantied for life to original purchaser in that car. It was a good battery, so good that I kept it when i sold the car & installed it in my next car & swapped the new car's battery into the previous car before selling it. After the 1st battery failed JC Penny had closed it's auto centers ( I wonder why) & Firestone took care of the battery warranties. I got 2 additional battery exchange just presenting the dead battery & the warranty papers with the original buyers name on it.
The Bosch batteries from PepBoys have stickers showing shipping dates. The one I took out of the car said January 2015 and the new one says January 2018. So I am not worried about them being old stock. And in this case the saleswomen did not even want to check it she just wanted to give me a new battery. OK by me.
The Pep Boys warranty on the Bosch AGM batteries is fantastic!
Same scenario happened to me last year... Left the car off of the trickle charger over the winter months and she was dead as a door nail when I went to start her up.
Drove into Pep Boys with the dead battery and drove back with a new one!
I've had a similar experience with Bosch and Pep Boys. I bought a Bosch battery with the highest warranty for my wife's (non-Porsche) car. It lasted a year. Pep Boys replaced it and that one lasted two years. They replaced that one too and the third one lasted many years. I bought a Bosch AGM from them for my 996 a few years ago and knock on wood, it's still going strong with no issues even though my car sometimes sits for two weeks or more during the winter.
Such good deals and warranties in the USA!
I've got a Bosch at the moment I have to keep it topped up by my c-tek so a replacement might be on the horizon.
@porschetech3 I haven't had time to test it but the starter problem hasn't come back so i'll keep an eye on it.
If it dies i'd like to get an Optima because my last one was still working 9+ years later! Too bad they aren't straight forward to fit into a 996...
Have seen those before but thanks for posting, being in Australia makes everything slightly more difficult to obtain though!
When the time comes ill probably invest in one and an optima.
What adapter plug in the passenger footwell? I don't have one of those. LOL However, is it switched or unswitched power? In other words, is the adapter plug live only when the car is turned on, or does it have power all the time? If power all the time (car not running), then yes, it will drain your battery...but...most cell phones draw so little power for charging I can't see that happening unless your car battery is old and weak.
No passenger footwell socket in 996...but there is in the 997 and that owner's manual says it's "hot" and recommends not leaving anything plugged in.
Note on operation The sockets and thus the connected electrical accessories function even if the ignition is switched off or the ignition key is withdrawn. If the engine is not running and the accessories are switched on, the vehicle battery will be discharged. Do not operate additional accessories for more than 5 minutes when engine is off. Maximum power consumption for both sockets together: 70 W. f Please observe the power specifications from the accessory manufacturer.
Quick search of the Optima site reveals that there is no optima battery that is a direct fit for the 996. An adaptor must be used... shame.
I'll stick to my Bosch + Ctek option until it dies the warranty is long passed
Actually @Dharn55 what model Bosch battery do you have? Mine is a 56318 which I believe is slightly smaller than the standard 996 battery - 63 A/H vs. the standard 70 or 80 A/H that is offered by Porsche:
I have them in 3 cars and they have done much better than interstate. When i go to replace one in a german car it is always a fight to find one at a local store (we have 3) that was produced in the last 3 months.

warranty fantastic born on date not so much
I bought a bosch agm battery from pepboys two weeks ago. Turns out when you order online and pick up at the store, it was $50 cheaper.
I hope this will last a long time, turns out the old battery from my 996 was a Diehard with a Nov 2005 date code, so the diehard lasted 12+ yrs.
Reviving this old thread. Anyone had issues with Bosch AGMs lately ? I've had two of them go bad. I went to pepboys and autozone (where i purchased them) and neither are selling Bosch batteries anymore - this is in the San Francisco Bay area. Literally the shelves still had Bosch labels on them but they did not have any Bosch batteries present.
A pepboys guy told me that there was a bad batch of Bosch AGMs and that they would last 6mos to a year before they went bad.
My 996 Bosch AGM eventually stopped holding any charge at all. Really had my fooled as I thought the issue was the alternator (because the battery was relatively new). Pepboys gave me a new Champion battery at no charge - they didn't even bother checking my receipt.
I have gotten 3 of these Bosch batterys like this. There is a mini pep boys service center less than a mile from my house. I click the buy online p/u in store option while charging the bad battery.
Make the mile drive to the store & I perform the switch in the parking lot so no need to return the old battery later.
Public service message: Check the battery for proper electrolite fluid level. These batteries sit in hot warehouses & some evaporation occurs. Use distilled water to top off. I use my old Brita filtered water pitcher.
Upgrade to an AGM battery. They are sealed and require no check of the fluid levels. Plus they don't off-gas so no chance for corrosion. Really is a better option.
So then maybe upgrade from the AGM to the Antigravity Lithium-Ion Battery as the next level?
By the way the Bosche is the same as the Walmart Platinum Plus models.... all made by Johnson Controls but just different re-branding lables. As an FYI.... Optimas really do suck badly. We do alot of tradeshows and they are by far the most complained about battery becuase they market them to performance cars yet they last about 2 years from the feed back we get.
Anyway our Lithiums offer 8-10 year lifespan, built in WIRELESS Jump Starting so you will never have a Dead Battery again, nor ever be locked out of the Frunk again.... and they save 30 lbs over the stock battery. Just sayin'.......

Optima's dont tolerate being left dead at all,, and they do NOT like maintainers..
you need to use a hard battery charge about once a week, and then leave them disconnected.
I'd use a Odyssey over a Optima,, smaller size, same weight as the equivalent capacity..
The Anti gravity batteries are cool tech, but I cant quite see the cost yet.. For me they need to drop about 25%..
(just my opinion of what the tech is worth in a street car, if It was a sprts race I'd be all over one.. )
Update to my post on Bosch batteries from PepBoys. I have bought them several times but over the last 5-6 years the battery in my car has gone bad every year or so. Seems to happen when the weather turns cold. This morning with the temp in the teens I went out and the car barely started. Drove it a few miles to a job site and parked it. When I came out 20 minutes later it would not start. Got a jump start and drove it to the next site, maybe 10 minutes. When I left there 15 minute's later it started up. But I am worried so I just checked with PepBoys and they no longer carry Bosch batteries. They are offering to replace it with a Champion battery which is what the now carry. Given that I bought the Bosch in 2014 and they have replaced it at least twice not too bad even if they give me the Champion.
Does anyone have any experience with the Champion?
