It's hard for me to believe that the dimensions of the dampers changed enough between the PSS9s and the PSS10s that the PSS10 isolator wouldn't work on the PSS9.
Leading evidence: 'Replace enough between the pss9s and the pss10s' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Clean things up' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Just picked up a set of used PSS9s and going through to clean things up before I install.

Has anyone replaced the rubber isolator pictured below?

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just picked up a set of used PSS9s and going through to clean things up before I install. Has anyone replaced the rubber isolator pictured below? I found some PSS10 documentation that shows the isolator above the spring plate, so I'm thinking these were assembled incorrectly -- just wanted to confirm before I go through and put things together for final install. Striking out with The Internet on a part number, but will try Bilstein directly tomorrow. Thanks in advance!
Struck out today, so still on the hunt for that rubber isolator. Spoke with Bilstein and they said to call Pelican, ECS, etc because the parts would only be available via retail anyway. Spent some time calling around and all of the retailers said to call Bilstein, so haven't found any leads yet. Bilstein did say that if I could find a kit part number they might be able to start there to search through their old system for part numbers, but it seems that when the PSS10s came out, all of the PSS9 information was wiped from The Internets.
Anyone have a receipt lying around with a kit part number for PSS9s for a C4/C4S that I could use to kick off some sleuthing with Bilstein? The number would start with "48-".
^^^ How sad! Shame on Bilstein for not knowing their own part numbers. It's a circular piece of rubber for god's sake! Call Elephant, or Tarrett or any of the other suspension specialists and see if they can help you. Shot of that maybe try to talk to a "technical" person at Bilstein... Good Luck
I agree that it's odd/frustrating that they can't look those things up quickly but, to their credit, they have offered to dive into this more deeply via email and I will take them up on that offer. I think their call center folks are pretty slammed and spending 30 min on the phone on a wild goose chase for old part numbers would just create unnecessary hold times for others. I can appreciate their willingness to help asynchronously -- let's hope it leads to something.
I took your advice and called Elephant Racing, they also pointed me back to Bilstein, so I think this where it either succeeds or fails.
It's hard for me to believe that the dimensions of the dampers changed enough between the PSS9s and the PSS10s that the PSS10 isolator wouldn't work on the PSS9. If someone can at least track THAT part down, I think it'd be worth a try.
The problem is that "call center people" don't know anything - if they cant see it on a computer screen, it's beyond their depth. I'd think that the third party people are constrained by "liability", so they always point you back to the manufacturer. Sad you can't just get a straight answer.
I got a quick response from Bilstein -- they referenced the exploded part diagram from the installation instructions to conclude that they didn't provide an isolator with the PSS9 kit and suggested that it might be an OE part that was re-used. I think I am going to tear these down and see how they feel re-assembled without the isolator in the *wrong* place and just omit it from where the isolator would be in the PSS10 assembly. Hopefully that doesn't result in unexpected clunking.
In case anyone needs it in the future, the part number for the PSS9 spanner wrench kit is
B4-XS1-Z001A00
NOTE: Do not use the ride height values from this diagram!!! This is not for the correct application... The 205-210mm range for PSS10 is correct for PSS9. I found this out the hard way.
Nice! It's always useful to speak with "technical" staff
Most likely it's some thing the PO decided to re-use and put it in what I would consider to be the wrong place. Judging from the diagram above it looks like it would still work between the top "spring carrier/spacer" and the top mount (i.e. - area with flat surfaces above and below)
Take a look at the attached from hlins R&T set up for the C4S.
It uses the OEM insulator but between the strut mound and large spacer.
It also uses a thing plastic ring at between the spring and spacer....this is an hlins part.
Just an FYI that may help.
Great call-out. After poking around with that info, I came across
this kit from ECS
(ignore the astronomical price), but haven't been able to find the individual kit part numbers to purchase separately.
Also, while searching for threads to help with restoring the corroded aluminum parts, I came across
this thread
with a couple of great images that show the part I'm looking for in what appears to be the correct orientation.
Oh well. Will keep looking around! Thanks again for all the input.
From playing around with other coil-overs, that rubber ring mainly helps with road noise and clatter.
I've used durel rings in a pinch. They stop squeaks, but they don't dampen road noise as well.
Up side is that durel is in the teflon family of plastics, so really doesn't bind up so the coils dont
walk the rings around the tube.
I think the key is the fact that the rubber ring is supposed to be between the aluminum spacer and the top mount. I think the fact that the PO placed it above the spring led to it's failure. I would think that you could make the part out of any semi hard rubber material if you could get a roughly 8"x 8" square sheet. Good luck
