Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Leading evidence: 'Use snap' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Fill coolant and they are done' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'm getting ready to put coolant in 996 tonight. I know I got out at least 5 gallons. No idea how much I spilled on the floor.
Instructions says that after idling and adding coolant to where car won't take anymore (relief valve flipped up), put cap back on and rev to 2k for 10 mins or until fans turns on. So basically just sit with my foot on the gas for 10mins (fans on) at 2k watching the thermostat?
Cap still on, I wait for the fans to turn on and then start revving every 30 seconds to 5k (I am thinking a quick blip at 5k). How long do I do this before I slowly (slowly) take cap off to fill again and repeat for another 5 minutes?
Any words of caution? I've done before on Boxster with no problems but I'm 5 years older, five years more forgetful.
Thanks,
David
I drove mine (with a gallon, funnel and a towel) until the coolant warning light came on, pulled over and toped off and repeated as necessary. Keeping the revs at 3K until up to temp. Worked for me...
I've gotten it close and then just driven the car for a few drive cycles with the relief valve flipped open, continuing to add more coolant as it burps air out. Once it gets to a steady-state level, then close the relief valve.
There is no way for a professional mechanic to keep your car for 2 days while they fill up your coolant, They all use the AirLift system to fill your coolant and they are done. Get one.
I used a Snap On vacuum filler. Basically uses a venturi pump to draw a vacuum on the coolant system, and then fills the system with coolant. Various companies make this tool and I cannot recommend it enough. Took all but a few minutes, you know you got the job done right, and no spilled coolant. They make universal ones and ones that require adapters. I got the adapter system to ensure I wouldn't loose vacuum during the fill.
Here is what the tool in use looks like
Here is what the adapter looks like on the tank
Just curious. Without starting car and valve open, I added 2.5 gallons tonight. What keeps more from going in?
down pouring here, rear of car away from doors so cant start yet due to fumes. Try again tomorrow.
Air pockets in the front radiators keep more fluid from going in, If you took out 5 gallons, and only put back 2.5, then there is a lot more to go back in,
Over and kind of done barring no leaks anywhere. I think I am at the point of driving around with valve open and topping off. I have probably 4.5 gallons in now. Besides the huge mess, bleeding the system really wasn't that bad.
Thanks for the help.
I used the “simple” method of adding coolant, revving engine, driving. Even raised the rear end like I did for my mid-engine race car. Drove for a couple of weeks, head cracked, coolant/oil mix in crankcase. Oops! Suggest you take seriously the suggestions to buy a vacuum system and read up on procedure.
I wouldnt say it was just reving the motor. I believe I added as much as I could. Then held the revs to 2k for a certain amount of time adding coolant as the coolant bubbles and lowered. When it wouldnt lower anymore, Then I put cap on. Valve still up. Rev to 5k every 30 seconds for 5 minutes. Took cap off, filled and repeated 5k rev every 30 seconds. I did the same on my Boxster years ago and didnt have a problem.
I just emptied again tonight. Tank leak. Ugh.
Hopefully I dont eat my words.
