Probably the whole suspension is exposed to it, but i cant feel anything from the suspension, its as firm and accurate as always, and the sound does not follow the suspension movement, more the body roll.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

15 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I have a 2002 996 which recently have developed a new highly irritating noise. It started occuring after having the car in for fluid film anti corrosion treatment. The sound is like a light "zing/ding" and comes only when driving on bumps that makes the car body flex or vibrate, but not or other bumps. Its like when the body flexes it goes like " ziiiiiing ziiing zing...", like a bolt with a loose washer which hits the bolt head repeated times with lower and lower velocity. It is impossible to locate the sound. From what I hear its loud enough to be inside the car. Like inside the dashboard on the passenger side. The sound is also coming more frequently and louder.

POST 3Original post

What is a fluid film anti corrosion treatment? Did they apply this stuff to the underside of the body? Did they spray any part of the suspension? Overspray?

Also my first thought. Sound description reminds me of old western films and ricocheting bullets.

POST 5 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Fluid film is something they spray on the whole underside of the body. They removed all wheels and plastic from the underside and applied it everywhere. It is basically liquid fat based on lanolin, which is excellent against corrosion as it creeps in everywhere. Probably the whole suspension is exposed to it, but i cant feel anything from the suspension, its as firm and accurate as always, and the sound does not follow the suspension movement, more the body roll. I tried filming it and cutting it so that you may hear it, its so much noise from everywhere, the rattling stereo, studded tires, engine etc... It looks like its filmed with a potato, but my phone holder is not really stable... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XP1v...ature=youtu.be

POST 6Original post

Can it be heard in your video? I would take off all the splash panels and drive to see if there's any change.

POST 7Original post

You do know that the entire underside of the car was coated with cosmoline from the factory and the entire body is galvanized? Do you live in a location where there is lots of snow and salt? From the studded tire comment it seems that may be the case. Just a suggestion, take it back to the place where the coating was applied and have them ride along with you. They might have experienced something like this before. If you didn't have the zing sound before, and you had the coating applied and now it is there, must have something to do with the stuff that was applied.

Yes, I have cut the video to only have clips where the sound is present. Probably need high volume, heard it well on my ipad

I live in Norway, here they spray so much salt on the roads during winter that all cars corrode :/ Thought about it, but also thinking about if I should deliver it to a workshop and have them look for it as it needs an alignment anyway. But to me the sound could also be on the inside, but its so hard to place it

POST 10Original post

My hearing's not so got, but what I heard sounded like wires arcing.

POST 11Original post

I hear that too Bill (again, with noted hearing loss). Is the stereo completely turned off in the video, or just volume down to zero? Mine makes a somewhat similar crackling noise from one speaker on the passenger side, that I have to track down.

POST 12Original post

Sounds to me that something in the dash is rattling.

POST 13Original post

My guess would be that they forgot some fasteners or assembled something wrong on the fender wells or splsh shields.

POST 14Original post

Loose radiator fan? How far apart did they take the front end, to do a spray process I'd expect the front bumper cover off.. FWIW,, A good place to get tips about protecting metal is the home-built experimental aircraft realm. Planes cant rust or it doesn't end well. Linseed oil works great for blind spaces if you can tumble it to coat the inside. It hardens like cosmoline with O2

POST 15 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Took out the navigation unit today and looked and felt inside the dashboard for loose parts. Was not in there, but at least it was not in vain as I eliminated the rattling from the PCM unit. It was missing a screw om the antenna unit on the back. Also padded the whole space in there with furniture protection pads... So next thing to do is to get it jacked up and have a look under, hopefully in the next few days
