Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Suspected cause
I was a complete novice when I had to do this on my Tiptronic and I took probably an hour to do.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I'll try and get the car on a lift tomorrow to check, but the tip has a totally different sensor. It's also the sensor for the little led's on the dash that say what gear I'm in, and those work fine. Maybe the linkage is out of whack? Who knows, trying not to spend $400.
If its the switch its really easy to fix....unfortunately you have to take out the central console but there are plenty of guides on how to do that.
Once youve got to the switch its easy to open it up and clean the copper contacts and bend them so they touch more easily. I was a complete novice when I had to do this on my Tiptronic and I took probably an hour to do.

its the switch. take center console out and its on the driver side. Take the switch box out and bend the contacts. Search on the 996 turbo section. It shouldn't take for than an hour
The switch that's $400 is the one that sits on the side of the automatic transmission and tells the computer what gear you're in.
I'll be taking the console off today and seeing if I can fix the switch that's there.
Victory!

Be careful, it has two Phillips mounting screws, one is easy to see, the other is hidden behind one of the electrical plugs.
Here's a pic of the contacts that have to touch for the back up lights to come on. And yes, I cleaned it up a bunch more before putting it back together.
