Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

After that, I cleaned all the carpet, headliner, and never had the smell again.

The PO of my Cayenne used a flowery, sickly sweet air freshener that made me gag.

Clean the carpets (and maybe the head liner), clean and condition the leather, ozone treatment, etc.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Just bought a 99. Replaced the cabin air filter when I noticed a barn smell. Its not as bad now, but I still notice occasionally and it bothers me. Any suggestions how to completely get rid of the smell?
When I got my 964 it smelled like cig smoke inside. I took it to the Porsche dealer and they did a full interior detail plus left an ozone machine sit inside overnight. Car has smelled like leather and every other 964 I've been in for five years now with no hint of the prior odors returning. I would go that route.
I imagine a decent detailer could help you as well. Clean the carpets (and maybe the head liner), clean and condition the leather, ozone treatment, etc.
The PO of my Cayenne used a flowery, sickly sweet air freshener that made me gag. I bought a four pack of these and so far have only used one. It was a big help but I think I'm going to use a second one to get rid of some residual smell.
Ozone machine will get it out quickly. Or you could just always drive with all windows open and park in the sun with the windows open as opportunity allows and it will be gone in a month.
You can grab a Meguiar's Odor Eliminator pretty cheap. It's worth a try if you have them locally, I've seen them in Wal Mart and they are like $10. Its pretty simple, pop the tab and lock it and leave it with the car running and vents recirculating. After that let it air out for a while. If that doesn't work try Ozone.
Those little ozone canisters do work well for a while, as a band aid fix. Nothing short of a complete deep cleaning is going to get that odor out of your car for good, though. I'm talking seats out clean.
Might want to double check around the interior and ductwork. "Barn smell" sounds like "mouse nest" to me.
Maybe one of those inexpensive USB bore scopes? You can get them on Amazon for $10-15.
yep....I bought a commercial unit for my VRBO house. Works wonders. Friends with animals have borrowed it as well

I bought a used car that had nasty cigarette smell in it and nothing in the parts store would work to remove the smell. I had to open up the vents and clean out the duct tubing with strong cleaner. Apparently, the cigarette smoke had coated the duct work. It was oily. After that, I cleaned all the carpet, headliner, and never had the smell again.
Good luck!
