You can also power them from the battery and use a manual switch to exhaust humid air when your windshield fogs over due to inappropriate use of the A/C during colder months or even when you activate the rear window defog.

My goal is to use solar power to pump hot air from inside my car to the outside, thus lowering the interior car temp when in hot sunlight.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I am looking for an alternative to the totally wrong window-mounted solar fan that you have seen on TV -- it is a fan that blows hot air from inside our 911s thru a slightly lowered drivers' or passenger window. I bought one, and promptly deconstructed it. I have a solar panel mounted on the dash, supplying excellent power to a fan attached to 1 inch tubing. This blows a good amount of air, but I need to port this air out of my car. I have been searching for a "port hole" somewhere in the floorboard. Under the drivers' side, there is a 2 inch hole behind insulation. I cannot tell where this hole leads. It doesn't seem to cool my car when the tubing is connected to this hole. My goal is to use solar power to pump hot air from inside my car to the outside, thus lowering the interior car temp when in hot sunlight. Thanks for any ideas! Jim Barber '05 C4S

POST 3Original post

You could use the hole on the passenger side where the steering column would go on a RHD car. I think it's plugged/sealed with a rubber stopper and leads to the front trunk area. Just don't keep any candles in the trunk.

POST 4Original post

Heat rises...Wouldnt the port need to be higher up?? Why dont you just tilt your sunroof?? And why did you get this again????

POST 5Original post

IMO, a fan can only do so much. The problem is that all the surfaces of your interior become very hot and radiate heat constantly. The solution is to stop these surfaces from heating up in the first place, so an ugly sunshield to cover the windshield would be a more effective solution. The cabin area in our cars is small enough that when you come back to your car, simply opening both doors and the sunroof will accomplish the same thing much more effectively than a small fan.

POST 6Original post

Yup. But you're wrong about the ugly sun shade. Dell recommeneded a Porsche OEM windshield sun shade that I bought through Sunset Imports. It's a LOT sturdier than others I've seen, comes in a nice little case, AND worked like a charm while I played tennis for 3 hours this past weekend. While the car wasn't A/C cold, it definitely didn't burn the cr@p out of me when I got it. Very worthy purchase and likely not as chintzy or labor intensive as the 'solar fan'.

POST 7Original post

There are two "exhauster" ports, one on each side, at the bottom of the rear window, about mid point of the rear package shelf. You can easily fit two computer 12 volt low power brushless computer type "muffin" fans at each port to forcedly exhaust the cabin atmosphere. You can also power them from the battery and use a manual switch to exhaust humid air when your windshield fogs over due to inappropriate use of the A/C during colder months or even when you activate the rear window defog. Or you can do as I did and add a switch to disable the A/C during the winter months.
