I use the "blob" method which means I drop in a blob of paint that fills in the chip and sticks out above the level of the clearcoat.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi gang, After some gentle prodding from another Rennlister, here's my new (to me) 996. This is my third Porsche with the first two being a 01 Boxster and the 2nd an 03 Boxster S. The paint was in pretty good shape when I took delivery. No dings but a couple of paint chips on the hood. Microscratches everywhere. I spent about 14 hours bringing the paint back. Also refinished all of the "hats" on the brake rotors and repainted the lug bolts. POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks everyone! It seems these days I'm quite astonished when I come across a web forum where everyone is...well... nice. Sure seems like the vast majority of them have one or two self-appointed know-it-alls who just rip on the new people. Anyway, the paintwork was a whole weekend project. I started detailing years ago and perfected it with a LOT of help from Autopia. Got a hood from the junk yard and learned how to use an orbital and DA buffer. From there, it was a matter of summoning up the nerve to go at the paint with a medium cut cleaner, yellow pad and an orbital buffer. Then the orange pad with a swirl mark remover. Then a black pad with a glaze. THEN, it was ready for wax. The shine isn't about the wax, it's about the surface prep. Anyway, I'll get some updated photos soon. Thanks again everyone! -Charles

POST 8Original post

Charles - like I said in response to your other post... very nice! The additional pics were obviously a hit! Now aren't you glad for the "gentle prodding" I offered? We really aren't ogres or trolls (well, most of us anyway) and the whole group really appreciates P-cars. Again, WELCOME!

POST 16Original post

Great looking car! What did you do to clean up the paint. It looks great.

POST 17 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Johnny, The car was in fairly good shape when I took ownership. The top had some rain spotting and there were a couple of paint chips in the hood. The car was fairly well covered with micro-scratches. You know, the ones you can see but can't feel. Anyway, I went after the paint chips first. I use the "blob" method which means I drop in a blob of paint that fills in the chip and sticks out above the level of the clearcoat. That's left to dry for a few days. I then very carefully wetsand the top of the blob down to the same level as the surrounding clear coat. It's not perfect but it looks WAY better than the chip. I used a clay bar to clean the water spots off the top. There were a few on the "tray" under the brake light as well. To take the micro-scratches out I used a medium cut cleaner from Meguire's with a yellow cut pad on an oribital buffer. I had to go over each panel twice to get them out. This took an entire day. This took out the scratches, but left swirl marks. I switched to an orange pad with a Swirl Mark Remover on a Porter-Cable Dual-Action buffer. Went over each panel with this. This takes out the swirl marks but leaves a slight haze. I then switched to a black pad and a 3M Machine Glaze on the DA buffer. I then went back and hit any scratches I missed with the same process as above. It's necessary to follow each step. No skipping. Once I had it looking like I wanted, I applied a good coat of Rejex. There was a separate process to deal with the rotor "hats." They looked like this when I pulled the wheels off: Splotchy paint, rust. This had to go. The lug bolts looked pretty much the same. Afterwards: -Charles

POST 19Original post

Charles - The hats look great! Do you have any pics "after" of the 'hats" with the wheels off? Exactly what did you do to the "hats?" Did you clean them up and then re-spray them? If so, what spray paint did you use?

POST 20Original post

Great looking car..! Nice color.. Thanks for your ideas... Red calipers would look great on your car...!!

POST 21 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hi gang, Yea, here are some more pics of the rotor "hat" refinishing project. The factory paint is very soft. I was able to sand them down to bare metal in 10 or 15 minutes with some 80 grit paper: Also sanded, primed and repainted the lug bolts: I used a primer I bought at Autozone. Nothing special. Once that dried, I used a high-temp silver. Yes, I know there's overspray on the rotor face but it doesn't really matter. One good trip around the block took that right off. I really wanted the paint line to go right to the edge of the brake pad so a bit of overspray was intentional: I didn't do a coat of clear on top because the car is a garage queen and I don't drive it in the rain anyway. It wouldn't hurt to top it with a clear, however. This is the same procedure and paint I used on my 03 Boxster S that lasted for 3 years without issue. Thanks! -Charles

POST 22Original post

That really does look great. Nice work. Hey I notice you live next to Roscoe P Coltrain - =) How old is the police car....wow.

POST 23Original post

Charles, thanks for the additional info and pics. This could be my next mod, after I install the exhaust cans modded to simulate PSE sound. Those go on today!

POST 24Original post

Like to hear more about the detailing process. No idea what the all the colors mean but end result looks really good.

POST 25Original post

really keen to hear more about the blob method for patching up pebble marks on front bumper. What grade wet and dry did you use and how do you avoid roughing up the adjoing paint nad how do you blend in the new paint with the old next to it. I hate seing all the pebble marks. Welcome and need more input.

POST 26 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Gang, The best way to learn how to touch-up paint and polish properly is to look at autopia.org. They have TONS of "how-to" articles with photos. I think you have to create an account (free) and log in to see the full forum list. Do a search there on paint touchup and you'll find some good articles. Thanks! -Charles
