I just did this on my 2004 and used a kit and bought the unit from cai-store.com.

And, yes, the dremel was used with the small cone shaped stone to remove just a very little bit of material from the inside corners just behind the very front of the kit to enable the head unit to slide (still VERY snug) the last inch or so into the Metra kit, but I suspect it varies slightly depending on the head unit manufacturer.

I was already replacing an older aftermarket single-din, so I unfortunately have zero helpful information regarding integration of the oem system with an aftermarket head unit.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The final result was still not perfect as there was a slight gap (about 1/16th of an inch) at the top of the double DIN radio.
Has anyone used this kit to add a double DIN head unit to a Bose equipped 996.

My HU is failing and Im looking to upgrade. I have a 2003 C4S.
I have used that kit...do not expect a perfect fit and be ready to use a dremmel tool to shave off some areas....here is my write up:

I used the Suncoast kit in my 03 C4S. Are you going to put in a new Amp too? If not you'll need to deal with a signal converter to bypass the Most system.
You will need to either convert the signal from a new head unit to the Most system. There are adapters, that is what I did. Or remove the Bose Amp and use a new Amp.
You can use the factory Bose speakers.
But you will need to decide which option to choose for an Amp.
There is a lot of info on double din installs on this forum. I went with the adapter. I purchased one on Amazon and it works for me.
I have a metra 95-9601 for sale in marketplace if you are interested for a 996 if interested.

edit:updated with right model number
Another 2 thumbs up for the Suncoast Kit. It was more expensive than the Metro, but fit much better. I purchased the Metro Kit and ended up then also purchasing the Suncoast kit since I was unhappy with the quality of the Metra kit. The final result was still not perfect as there was a slight gap (about 1/16th of an inch) at the top of the double DIN radio.
Since the double DIN unit should have plenty of power for my old ears, I was thinking I would just bypass the factory amp. Has anyone done this? Are there kits for this?
Thanks
Yes, I went full speed cheapskate and used that exact installation kit with this android double-din head unit in my 01' about 6 months ago.

The dremel cutting disk was also utilized to trim other plastic necessary to fit a double-din. I'm unfortunately closer to a butcher than a surgeon, and I found it was a very simple process. I'm fine with the results and fitment.
I just did this on my 2004 and used a kit and bought the unit from cai-store.com. I would highly recommend them for their great products and support during the project.
Just to I know what to purchase, would one of these be correct?

I can't comment on the units in those links. I ended up buying everything from CAI-Store.com because they build you a custom plug and play harness that has the converter built in. I would call them and ask for Rod. He'll tell you if those would work. I talked to him the other day. My units been installed for a while. I had to remove it for something and broke the surround he originally sent me, totally my fault. He shipped me another no charge. I called them 5-6 times during the install and they were super helpful.
