It would be nice if there was an actual specification on setting the mounting height, but I can't seem to find anything definitive.

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

8 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I picked up a hardtop for my Cab this past summer. Drove home with it on with no issues. Used it for one track day, but noticed when I removed it, there were scratches in the paint where the seals contact, specifically at the side points just behind the side windows. After a closer inspection of the top, I noticed the rubber seal has a sort of mold seam/ridge right at this point. Has anyone else experienced this? I'm thinking about trying to gently sand these ridges to remove them. Thoughts?

POST 2Original post

Perhaps add clear paint protection film (PPF) on the body paint as well.

POST 3Original post

Your top is not adjusted properly. That should not be happening.

This. The bayonets (rear clamps) are adjustable and it sounds like they are pulling the top down too much. Remove the plastic covers over the rear mounting points preferably with a trim tool very gently, because the tabs are fragile. I'd recommend adjusting it up about 1/2 in. The shell of the top should not fit snugly against the body of the car...it should rest above the body by at least 1/2 inch and the gasket on the top will do the sealing. Here is a picture of how mine sits on my car

Understood and thanks. Actually, mine looks similar in clearance to your picture. It would be nice if there was an actual specification on setting the mounting height, but I can't seem to find anything definitive. In my case it's not the shell that is making contact, it's the gasket itself that has left marks in the paint. Looking closely at the gasket itself, there is a seam or line from molding process, that "seems" to be the culprit. Gaskets appear to be nice and soft and I've treated them with Gummipledge (seal conditioner).

POST 6Original post

There is a set of specs. in the manual, my top was making to much noise going down the road a few years ago and looked them up. after adjusting the top, the ride was much quieter.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Thanks John! Ive been looking for those specs but in the wrong place in manual. Found them and will try this. Im not sure if this picture shows the mould ridge well enough or not, but this is what is scratching the paint. Right side Left side

POST 8Original post

The only answer I know if is leading edge tape to protect the contact surfaces, I've seen this on Miata's, MG's, its kind of a removable hard-top hazard. I have the same problem with the hardtop on my jeep in a couple spots.
