Ive seen used sets sold on eBay, they include the ignition lock cylinder and housing and ignition switch, keys and fobs, the DME, the Immobilizer, the door handle base and lock, and the glovebox and lock, basically all that needs an actual key except for the center console

If you order a new ignition cylinder "w/o stipulated lock number" it will have a different key that comes with it that will not match existing, and you will have to have two keys, or replace entire set.

If getting a brand new lock cylinder means I wont be able to use its keys to manually lock/unlock the door, then, for the sake of saving money, can I just buy a used ignition key cylinder that comes with a key and have the dealer cut a copy of such key blade, buy a new fob and have the dealership program it to start the car?

Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

Hello all, my first post. I have a 2004 Porsche 911 4s that I bought from an auction. It was stolen and once recovered the insurance company sold it at an auction and I won it. Anyway, the ignition lock cylinder was destroyed, I need to replace it and also get new keys and fob for it. I already did some research and I believe I know the part number but I also have some questions for you all since I dont trust the stealership. 1. If I get a brand new cylinder, can I have the dealership cut a copy of the original key blade and be able to use it to manually lock/unlock the door as well as to use it in the new ignition lock cylinder? Based on the photos Ive seen online brand new ignition look cylinders come with two already cut blades so I am doubtful. 2. I can live without being able to manually lock/unlock the door I guess. I will have to get a new fob regardless and have the dealership program it. What do you suggest? TIA.

POST 4Original post

There are DIYs somewhere on replacing early dashboard with later ones. That should help out. I’ve seen dashboards for about $250 shipped off eBay. Search for “Boxster dashboard” and skip the 911 premium. When you remove your dashboard, I might be interested in it. Might have a project where a keyswitch hole is not necessary and the hole could be covered.

POST 5Original post

You have a full leather dash in that car. Careful you don't replace with the vinyl one.

thanks!

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

What about if I get a used set consisting of DME, Immobilizer, ignition switch, key blade and fob all removed from the same donor car? would it be just plug and play? Or I would have to have the dealership do some programming anyway?

POST 8Original post

Quotes source post: 16275931

This is going to be expensive. You'll need to replace the locking assembly, new keys, leather dash, and maybe another matching immobilizer. IMHO, this was done by a sloppy thief that knows absolutely nothing about RFID. You can't easily hard wire these cars.

POST 9Original post

The car will require opening the doors with the manual key if it sits for a week or so. There is also the lock on the glove box and console that need a key. Hopefully someone has a suggestion on how to get the ignition key to match the others.

My question is if I get one of these used sets, would it be just plug and play? assuming obviously that all the modules are the same part number as what my car currently has and assuming they were all working synchronized in the donor car before taking them off it,

POST 11Original post

Quotes source post: 16281996

If you order a new ignition lock cylinder "with stipulated lock number" you will get one that will match you existing door locks, glove box, console lid, and original keys, ect. If you order a new ignition cylinder "w/o stipulated lock number" it will have a different key that comes with it that will not match existing, and you will have to have two keys, or replace entire set.

Thank you! And I assume the dealer should be able to get me one a cylinder with stipulated lock number by my cars VIN?

POST 13Original post

If you get the lock set to match the VIN then I assume you wouldnt need a new DME/Immobilizer?

POST 14Original post

Quotes source post: 16282470

Yes, you will need proof of ownership documents (that they will probably make a copy for records), to insure you are rightful owner with VIN number.

POST 15Original post

Quotes source post: 16282484

Correct, if you have an existing key head/transponder/pill, you are set. If you have no existing key head/transponder/pill you will need one and have it programmed to the immobilizer.
