Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

The above has completely changed the car for the better.
Leading evidence: 'Replace car' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'ls swap' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace car' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

You forgot to mention to also replace the MAF sensor.

Suggestion
I'm sure there are shops that would do the whole job, but I would think it's going to run north of $30k for that type of job (everything including gauges sensors etc.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Best bang for the buck is new plugs and coils.
A less restrictive exhaust helps some.
Replace the worn out control arms.
Also replace the struts. (I went with Feal coilovers and REALLY like them)
That will make it drive like new again.(or better if you upgrade to adjustable coilovers)
I think the cheapest upgrade is stripping out weight...mufflers, cats, carpets rear seats, tools and spare tire. Also, go on a diet....unfortunately that was too hard for me so I spent a fortune on 997 3.8.
Antigravity battery and remove the spare wheel/tire can shave 50 lbs of weight!
I wouldnt do anything to the engine, its a waste of money. Get a turbo instead for power.
If you replace all the wearable items probably due.
Do all the preventive maintenance.
If you pay for a shop to do work, you will be well into 5 figures.
Do that first, then think about upgrades.
Just my $.02
BTW welcome to 996 world of nobody agreeing
X-Pipe 200 Cell Cats
Dansk Mufflers
Wevo Semi Solid Engine Mounts

The above has completely changed the car for the better. It was a blast to drive when I first got it, now it is a pure raw driving experience. I feel like those mods in particular are an improvement on the experience without losing what the car is all about in the first place.
Totally agree with the suspension upgrade. It really brings the ride to a different level.
You forgot to mention to also replace the MAF sensor.
+1 for the exhaust, a 200cell cat, does not need to be x-pipe.
what kind of gains/goals are you expecting to make? I did most of the things mentioned above and if your looking for a wow factor improvement as far as hp performance... get another motor.
suspension
.. you'll feel that one. I redid sway bar bushing(power flex), control arm bushings(elephant racing "sport"), trailing arms(EPS) and coilovers(HSR). That made a
huge
difference as far as the driving experience goes. corners felt like candy and made me smile even more so then when I first smiled after getting the car lol
I'm swapping in a different motor and hoping to finally get that wow factor performance feel. After spending about $4k in what I thought would be noticeable performance stuff to the the motor. Not saying it wasn't an improvement but it just wasn't a grin on my face money spent kinda thing.
My 2cents
Lots of opinions. Does anyone know what the
first-time poster
actually has (if even a 996 person) to improve upon? Could this be like a Kentucky basketball freshman? One and done? Probably a Turbro trolling us NA folks...joking.
Eh...I think there are way too many variables for such a blanket statement - especially if you're talking DIY. I'm sure there are shops that would do the whole job, but I would think it's going to run north of $30k for that type of job (everything including gauges sensors etc. guaranteed to work properly). Granted, if it's put together properly it's going to be one beast of a car... I just don't think it'll be any sort of a bargain.
Why not both?
I'm building out my 996 C2, but I already had more money into the car than it was worth due to IMS failure, so I figure I'll just keep the car, rebuild it, have my fun, and then give it to my kids. True, sunk cost fallacy, but what else was I going to do?
