Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

Also the 996.1 X51 was never sold in the US due to not having provisions for SAI, or dual cam position sensors..(ROW cars only used 1 cam sensor on bank 1 for 996.1)
Leading evidence: 'Use 1 cam sensor' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Use 1 cam sensor' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I thought those where one time use bolt, or can they be reused?

The "very early" (97YM) m96's used M10 X 234mm head bolts that were TTY ( Torque to Yield) and were one time only use, the "later"(98up) M96's used M10 X 230mm head bolts which are NOT TTY and can be reused if you wish.

These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I have a 2001 3.4 that is toast. Looking around for short blocks the X51 (part number
996.100.951.TX)
is $5,849 and the non x51 (part number 996-100-996-TX) is $6,726. I know there are differences in the X51 package but can you use a X51 short block with regular everything else? Are there any advantages or disadvantages to doing this?
Thanks
The difference between the X51 and non-X51 short blocks from Porsche is the depth of the notches for valve reliefs in the pistons.
The X51 has a slightly deeper notch for the slightly higher lift of the camshaft/valve. You can use the X51 short block with the standard heads/cams, but not vise-versa.
The X51 short block is priced much cheaper and the reason I used this part number in my " Replacement M96 DIY Engines Under 10K" thread.

So Doc, are the reliefs significant enough to reduce compression ratio? Or is this compensated by more material elsewhere on the crown?
Asking for a friend....
Porschetech3, Thanks for the wealth of information.
When you purchase the x51 short block can a normal m96 be used as the core or do they have to be the same part number?
When buying a 3.4 x51, you can use the M96/01 M96/02 or M96/04 as a core since they are all basically the same, you cannot use M96/03 (2002-2004 3.6) or a Boxster core engine (M96/20 M96/21 ect)....
