Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

I had to buy a whole roll, and only used a very small piece.
Leading evidence: 'Use very small piece' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Repair manual' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I would like to rule that out before tearing into the engine bay to replace all the vacuum components.

I'm out of town this weekend, but I'm happy to let you use my 2AI pump for a day or two next week for troubleshooting - I'm in La Mesa.
Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Is there anyone in the greater San Diego area, up to orange county, that may have a known working SAI pump for a 2003 996 that I could borrow as I trouble shoot an insufficient flow code? I would like to rule that out before tearing into the engine bay to replace all the vacuum components.
thank you.
Brian.
If you are having an insufficient flow problem, and the SAI pump is making noise, it's in the controls. It's basically a vacuum system that opens the valves.
It has a solenoid valve, vacuum lines, the SAI pump and then the valves that are vacuum operated. It's super simple to troubleshoot, my money is on a broken vacuum hose.
Here is some info I put together many, many years ago on the Audi A8, but it's basically the same system.

If your existing pump is turning and making noise, it's a 99% chance it's not the pump.
I built one too, and it's pretty straightforward, but definitely more expensive than the cigar hack. BTW, If anyone needs a length of resistance wire, let me know and I can send you some. I had to buy a whole roll, and only used a very small piece.
Same thing here.
If anyone locally wants to build one, I have the Nichrome wire.
Ill also send out some wire so CDS72911 doesnt have to supply everyone.
If youre local, you can take a look at my smoke machine too.
Im on my second one.
I gave my first one away and made a LOT of improvements with the second one.
my third one was built by my friend using parts I supplied on his YouTube channel.

I don't know if you have resolved this or not but I have the SAI pump removed from my car currently and would be willing to let you borrow it but I am in Colorado so if you are down to pay shipping both ways it is yours.
