Coverage and how to read this overview

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

14 eligible posts · 0 unverified posts · 1 discussions match the subject in their title or opening post.

POST 1 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

I hear a crackling/clicking noise from the passinger side of the soft top. The sound is sporadic, not continuous, and is during normal driving, not during operation of the roof or when car is idle. Not real loud, but annoying. No noise when the roof is down or when the hard top is on, so it's definitely something related to the soft top. Anyone experience this? Thanks. GBG

POST 2Original post

I haven't had that experience. I would bring it to the dealer to see if they can determine the cause before the chance it would get worse.

POST 3Original post

There are a ton of TSBs for the soft-top, so definitely bring it to the dealer and see what he can tell you.

POST 4Original post

Sporatic sounds are hard to diagnoise. If there is a road that always makes the sound happen, have someone else drive and try to locate the problem yourself. Put your hand on different spots to see if the sound goes away. It maybe the flocking panel rubbing against the windshield header if the sound is coming from the front. The flocking panel is a piece of plastic under the canvass to make the front portion of the softtop hard. It may be warped. Or, the top may just needs some adjustment and lube.

Thanks guys. A trip to the dealer it is. GBG

POST 6Original post

I have the same thing on the driver's side. Trip to dealer didn't help. The sound goes away when you push on the window. Very annoying.

POST 7 / ORIGINAL POSTEROriginal post

C4Leon: Damn, that wasn't what I wanted to hear. Pushing on the window is not exatly the technical fix we were looking for, eh? My sound is on the passenger side, so I can't push on the window even if I wanted to. Did the dealer have any clue at to the cause? It would be a real bummer if this sound is here to stay (I'll get used to it, but, ****, for this $$ why should I have to? )

POST 8Original post

If the noise is from the glass rattling against the top frame, the door strke plate can be adjusted to ensure a better seal. Also, the window regulator may need to be replaced. To diagnoise this, have a passenger push the glass to see if noise goes away.

POST 9Original post

I've had multiple creaks and rattles from my top. I've tried opening the top a few inches then closing. It's helped a majority of the time. My best solution is to max out great driving music.

POST 11Original post

I hear something similar now and again. Almost sounds like the rubber seals for the window. Is there a procedure to lubricate or condition the rubber seals at all ? On my NSX, the dealer used to put what looked like vasaline on the Targa roof seals. SOmetimes it sounds like there is a tacky side to the roof lining that is touching the fabric roof? Is there also a cab roof mechanism lubrication interval and procedure ? Thanks

POST 12Original post

rattling and crackling and sqweeking, and moaning go hand in hand with a cab!.....just drive with the top down and enjoy the sounds of all others around you!!

POST 13Original post

Porsche uses and recommends Krytox by Dupont. You can find it here: Krytox Costs about $20 for a small tube.

POST 14Original post

Krytox ? Serious ? Thats a vacuum grease we use in engineering for o-ring lubrication :-) I have a tube in my tool box...
