Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

It hasn't been cost-free - fuel pump, water pump, coil packs, ignition switches, MAF sensors and the like add up, but the vast majority of those were PM or replaced early during failure.
Leading evidence: 'Replace early during failure' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, the most frequently mentioned possible cause is 'sweet spot of the 911 evolution' (1 discussions; 0 report identifying it and 1 suggest it). The most frequently discussed action is 'Replace early during failure' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

Dual row IMSB replaced with LN retrofit just before I bought it, AOS, water pump, motor mounts done by me.

Suspected cause
As I've commented elsewhere here, IMHO, the 996 is likely the sweet spot of the 911 evolution.

working on replacing the IMS/RMS and cam guides next.

Suggestion
Still have some problems w/my reg/pink to correct (negligent/incompetent dealer) and some mechanical/electronic issues to fix (nothing that prevents use of the car) but it should be fine after I get these things worked out.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

So I have my 2 year anniversary with the car next month. With regular maintenance its been relatively trouble-free, especially for a 20 year old car. When I got it I was looking for an all wheel drive car to get to dialysis 50 miles away rain or shine 3x/week. I didnt realize that its all wheel drive didnt make it Jeep-like. And as it turns out Im happier for that. This car makes every other car seem . . . lesser. There are so many posts here listing troubles, but I think these cars are worth it.
Nice! I am approaching my 1 year anniversary with mine. Had the major maintenance items taken care of and now its cleaning up the cosmetic stuff, think I am going to get a new top next season.
3 seasons on my '00 C2 cab...26k mi when purchased. Dual row IMSB replaced with LN retrofit just before I bought it, AOS, water pump, motor mounts done by me. Only issues I've had are windshield washer hose coming off the barb on the pump 2x and a blown bulb.
Approaching 2 years with my 03 C4S also. Thread coming soon. Zero issues besides maintenance/wear items that are common on a 16 y/o car with 90k miles on it... None of the doom and gloom that permeates the thread counts!
I usually keep the cars I buy a very long time. 15 yrs on my 2002 Toyota MR2, 12 yrs on my 2002 Ford F250, 6 years on my 2008 BMW 335i and 3 yrs so far on my MB ML350.
Hoping to have the same experience w/the 2000 C4 Cab that I just bought 3 months ago.
Still have some problems w/my reg/pink to correct (negligent/incompetent dealer) and some mechanical/electronic issues to fix (nothing that prevents use of the car) but it should be fine after I get these things worked out.
I've plowed about 70K miles onto my '99 C4 in the 6.5 years since acquiring it; just about to roll over 100K. It hasn't been cost-free - fuel pump, water pump, coil packs, ignition switches, MAF sensors and the like add up, but the vast majority of those were PM or replaced early during failure. Only two occasions - the fuel pump and some busted wheel studs - have required the tender ministrations of flat-bed tow truck drivers.
Tell you what, I had a new top put on and I can't get the GD roof to shut properly without pulling my arm out of socket.
Hope that holds you over until the other top post.
Congrats on the happy ownership.
Yep, if you believed all you read here, every 996 is about to succumb to bore scoring, blow its engine or some other calamity. They're great cars - but they're 20 years old or more, so some will fail. That's how it is with cars. Enjoy it and don't look back!
I'm coming up to 1 year of ownership.
I have replaced and or upgraded all of the suspension. working on replacing the IMS/RMS and cam guides next.
Just hording away all the parts to do the job all in one weekend.
But I still love the car...
Not a daily driver, but there would have been less miles put on if it were - I live in a very small town and have less than a mile to get to work. Matter of fact I thought I had the only 911 in the county until I saw this:
Yep, the handling and steering on these cars is top notch.
As I've commented elsewhere here, IMHO, the 996 is likely the sweet spot of the 911 evolution. They have a much if not all of the air-cooled era's chuckability, directness and feel, but actually enhanced and improved versus the 993. They are fairly lightweight, yet have modern creature comforts.
That package really hasn't been duplicated since by Porsche or any other manufacturer I know if. And their GT1 headlights and other silliness has altogether kept the prices down, so if I crash or blow up my current 996, another can follow without breaking the bank. What's not to like?
Enjoy it in good health!
'02 C2, 178,000 on original engine (78,000 by me). Owned almost 8 years and is my DD. I've put some money into it but have driven it all over the place, through blizzards, scorching heat, etc and it has handled it all without breaking a sweat.
