Read evidence and context
Explicit resolution reports before identified causes, performed actions and suggestions. Within each level, matching component labels precede direct query mentions and inherited thread context; successful versus unsuccessful discussion counts, owner confirmations and independent discussion support determine order. This is not a probability of success.

How long does it take for the oil, figuring moderate ambient outside temperature for the oil to reach operating temperature ie: after start up and running easy, when is it "safe to HIT IT?
Leading evidence: 'Run on a 5*c day' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Across 1 matching discussions, The most frequently discussed action is 'Run easy' (1 discussions). For that action, 0 discussions report a resolution and 0 report an unsuccessful attempt. No action has an explicit, attributable resolution report under the current rules. These are forum reports and suggestions, not a confirmed diagnosis.

I use 5 more minutes after getting temps to 80ish before exceeding 5k rpms for any duration.

Great, Looks like 8 - 10 minutes of run time should do it

Its probably better to use mileage instead of time, but if I recall correctly, there was highway mileage involved.
These are separate views of the same evidence. Frequency alone does not establish a fix, and these counts must not be added together.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

The oil takes a little bit more time to reach full operating temperature, say like about 10-15 minutes of drive time after the water temp hits 180. Just take it easy the first few miles.
+1. Found an image from a previous post, sorry I cannot give credit, buts its a Rennlister who plotted his temps. Its probably better to use mileage instead of time, but if I recall correctly, there was highway mileage involved. The point, however, is more about correlating oil and water temps.
You are probably safe to hit it when oil temps are 100-120F, but I stay away from +6000 RPMs until Im well past 150F. Thats just me. The BMW tachometer variable redline doesnt wait for full operating temps, and neither do drag racers.
Daniel-You are correct.
Most in 996 world seem to be getting on the same page relevant to operating time to temp. Baz mentions after the dial says 180ish, expect to need additional minutes for engine case and cylinder temps to equalize for 1 thru 6 (6 staying coldest longest). I also observe oil pressure drop when needle comes alive to run up to 4K rpm. I use 5 more minutes after getting temps to 80ish before exceeding 5k rpms for any duration. On my engine I plugged in my Durametric and ran on a 5*C day. Kept rpm under 3200 and did 45 mph for near 5 minutes-water temp temp up to 79*C, oil temp 70*C. Next 5 minutes at 55-75 mph and temps up to 80*C and 84*C. Did same thing last month on a 29*C day and times were reduced to 4 and 4. Stock, not low temp, thermostat and my crossover line is close to the one posted by Mike...thanks for that...just shifted slightly up.
So, to sum up my rule of thumb: 5 minutes babying below 3200. 5 minutes more to drive it like a Porsche. 5 minutes after that to drive it like a race car at redline.
