This is a 3.8 airbox which used a mechanical flap to open and close the small air outlet but I am not sure how to hook up the vacuum hose to open and close the flap.

Used an orange cap on the small air outlet to plug air flow.

they usually sell it 45$ used when the 997 guys go the evo route.

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

Ok, finally found a 997 air box on eBay for $25 + 15 ship. Came off a 997 with 100 miles. Also note the C4S bumper from eBay for $400. Pictures shot with the new iPhone4.
wow, that is much nicer than the stock 996 airbox!
Any performance changes? plus or minus? Is this airbox "mechanically" the same as the 996 one?
Would this void my warranty if I installed it?
I really like the look of this!
and I'm also impressed with the 4G quality of pics!
Very nice Mod, now if I can convince either my Bro-in-law in LA or my neightbor friend to upgrade their 997 airbox so that I can have their OEM one, that would be awesome
Thanks for sharing the pics...
Suncoast:
997-110-923-01 AIR CLEANER 377.89 (not in stock)
The intake to the air box is larger than 996. Vents on bottom of box use an open screen, very tight, will not let in water. OEM uses perforated plastic. Used an orange cap on the small air outlet to plug air flow. It seems a little throatier, and more responsive but cant be sure. This is a 3.8 airbox which used a mechanical flap to open and close the small air outlet but I am not sure how to hook up the vacuum hose to open and close the flap. With the orange cap it is always closed.
Just wondering - it says 3.8 on the airbox right?
If so I personally wouldn't want it on...just doesn't seem right - kinda like putting on 'eyelids' to make the 996 headlights look like 997's....
I'm proud of my headlights AND my airbox!
LOL
Ok, I will have to agree. I want to keep all upgrades to OEM Porsche and MKII 996. But the 997 airbox has much better air flow and looks cleaner. If anyone knows the part number for a 3.6 airbox badge let me know, I would love to switch it out.

After:
cmon, whatever, if you're that self conscious you'll need more than a 3.6 badge to fix your insecurities. These cars aren't classics, drive em, enjoy em, but don't be ridiculous with the "I want to keep all upgrades to OEM Porsche and MKII 996" stuff
I'm more interested in substantiation o the "much better airflow" statement. Has anyone, anyone ever dynoed these before and after?
... and maybe even define "better". Intakes are tuned for volume, flow, pressure and temperature. I'm always suspicious of words like "better" when it comes to mods.
It does look pretty, though, no doubt about it.
haha actually no coffee at all here! Quit coffee when I quit smoking.
I didn't mean it harshly at all, no intonation on the internet! I did not mean to sound like I was speaking about him specifically either. Most 997 parts are interchangeable w/ 996 parts, some may even be improved beyond cosmetics, so by all means go ahead and use them if you want to is all I'm saying, and don't let anyone else's opinions on "correctness" dictate your decisions.
I've always been fatigued by "purist" attitudes especially when misapplied to volume production, massively depreciating, technologically advanced cars. In a collectible, sure I want it correct, original and straight. My driver? I want it fast, loud, shiny and reliable.
And I don't care if someone has a 3.8 airbox or a 3.6 airbox. but if I change the badge on my 3.8 airbox to a 3.6, now I really have to do some gymnastics. All I've done now is change the name of the actual part to something else which it is not. It
IS
a 3.8 airbox. It's
NOT
a 3.6 airbox. "This is my 3.6 996. I put on a 997 3.8 airbox, but since I felt like I was somehow misleading the throngs of admirers who peek under my engine lid every weekend, I changed the badge to 3.6"
It's patently ridiculous. 99.99% of the population will deem you fit for commitment to a mental institution upon hearing that statement or any variation thereof.
I agree that there won't be too many collectible 996s, other than the TT and the GT3. But I'd say yours is a pretty harsh judgment all the same. 996 production never got much over 20,000 units a year worldwide. I've actually been very impressed with the depreciation, compared to a lot of cars with such a high initial price. And mine, at least, is practically primitive technologically, compared to modern cars. As you wouldn't judge someone for updating a 996 (a time-honoured Porsche tradition going back to the 356, by the way), so I wouldn't judge someone who decided to treat theirs as special. Just sayin'.
OK, Tks, Marc.
Although I like the look, it's tough for me to justify the cost (+300.00) for something no one ever sees. Wonder how he found of a sub-$100 complete box especially on E-b. Lucky him.
The 3.8 airbox does take a little more compartment room. Not much though.
I notice it doesn't have the flat seal to prevent hot engine gasses at lower rpms getting into the intake. I'm not even sure of the differences in external air pressures compairing the open bottom of the engine and the top spoiler area before and after spoiler raising. If the pressure is higher on the bottom at any periods its going to promote hot air into the intake. But like I care after running an offenhauser single plane intake and 4 barrel with no air filter housing or filter on a hot rod.
I would be concered about how the alternator has less space around it. This could lead to earlier failure of the diode stacks from extra heat exposure. But then if cooler air flow is in that area then maybe the alternator will stay cooler. Eh I don't know.
Cool mod. You know there are places online or at trophy shops you could have a different plate made for the 997 box
Just make sure you get into some understanding of which adhesive to use for that hot spot in there. I'm not sure common trophy styles of glue will stand up to engine compartment heats.
