I installed the thicker steering wheel on my car, using the air bag module (plastic cover) that came with the car.
Leading evidence: 'Install thicker steering wheel' (no explicit attributable resolution; this is a reported action or suggestion). Suggestion
Other wise it should be able to be done in less than 2 hours (you need to disconnect the battery for some time before you do anything...or you get the airbag light which can only be switched off at the dealer).

Counts describe captured discussions, not unique people or a diagnosis. Author identities are not reliably stored. Exact duplicate evidence is counted once across matching discussions; one discussion counts at most once per action/state. Multiple repairs reported together remain a combination. Suggestions and failed attempts do not establish a fix. Matches cover whole discussions and can include related faults, model variants and incomplete threads.

I think this was addressed in earlier posts, but I'll ask anyhow. I have the standard 3 spoke leather wheel on my '04 C4S - nice, but I'd prefer the thicker wheel. A couple of questions:
1. Will the standard airbag mechanism presently in the car work with the new thicker wheel, or do I need to purchase a new wheel with airbag setup?
2. What should I expect to pay (part(s) plus labor) for the wheel (and bag should I need it)?
3. I would have Brandywine do the work - would it make sense to buy from them, Suncoast or other for the best price?
Appreciate input! Thanks!
Phil

Which thicker wheel are you going with...Some sell the airbag with the wheeel some you can switch over. $ depends on the wheel and is it CF or just leather. It is a DIY if you're up for it. Other wise it should be able to be done in less than 2 hours (you need to disconnect the battery for some time before you do anything...or you get the airbag light which can only be switched off at the dealer).
I'm fairly certain the thicker OEM steering wheel will not work with your current airbag. I don't know if mine was the best price, but I got mine from Gert last year for around $900 including the airbag. If you have the torx tool and an hour, it's a simple DIY. You just loosen the two torx screws holding the airbag, disconnect the airbag module and horn, remove the big center screw locking down the wheel, and you're done. Be sure to disconnect the battery first and mark the position of the old wheel to the shaft before removing the wheel.
Hope this helps.
Interesting... Carnewal's site indicates it will accept the standard 3-spoke airbag.

Post back how it works out for you, as I'm considering this as well.

If you have the standard 3 spoke steering wheel for an '04, the air bag module fits perfectly on the thicker 3-spoke steering wheel. I installed the thicker steering wheel on my car, using the air bag module (plastic cover) that came with the car. I later swapped that for the leather covered air bag module.
I don't know for certain and I would say yes. Compare the two pictures on Carnewal, with the knowledge of the airbags being the same. The length of the three connecting points to the wheel circumference looks the same, minus some accounting for the thicker wheel.
For whatever that's worth...
I just grabbed my old stock 3-spoke wheel and compared it to the thicker 3-spoke steering wheel on my car. Both measure right around 14 .75" in diameter. The difference is in the 'thickness' of the grip, not the overall size of the wheel. The thicker version feels great in my opinion. It is not as thick as the BMW M3 steering wheel, which many feel is too thick.
Has anyone tried Alan Gun Leather Accessories(

)?
He can add additional layers of leather to make it thicker as well as cover the airbag. The pricing seems reasonable compared to a new wheel.
I once had him recover a 964 wheel for me and it the fit and finish was not up to par with OEM Porsche, but the result was far better than the condition the wheel had deteriorated into nonetheless. If you are on a tight budget and can't live with what you've got I would use him. If you can afford OEM that is the better route.
