interesting....i replaced my cargraphic exhaust with fs supercups then with maxflos.

Plus, used maxflos can be a great deal on the used market.

The super sound is loud so I don't recommend it for everyone the TUV sound is probably the best for those that want good sound but not too loud.

I developed a rattle in the other muffler and he fixed it for $75.
I saw a video today of another user's car and I loved the sound. In fact, I used to love my car's sound since it had the fister mod when I bought it. The baffle broke on one and now it rattles, so I have been using a set of maxflos I bought on here. The problem is, they sound terrible. I almost think it has an exhuast leak or they just sound terrible as is. I wanted to fix my own modded cans, but any shop I spoke with said to scrap them because it wasn't worth the cost. I'm not sure the maxflos were worth $1,000, though. How much should it cost if I talk a shop into fixing them (approx)? Also, any other tips would be great. I just want a raspy flat 6 again!
How about picking up some used stock mufflers cheap and having them Gundoed for $200?
Btw just this week my Indy says he spends way too much time pulling crap exhaust systems and intakes off of Porsches and putting stock setups back on.
I have been thinking about this. I am a little nervous about getting a set that gets a rattle within a year or so. I'll have to keep my eye out for some clean cans on here. Anyone wanna trade for some maxflos!!
Hey Twitchett,
I think those where my maxflo's… they sounded great on my car....I wonder if it was because I had 200 Cell cats and EVOMS cold air kit. How is the rest of the car set up? Also, you could have a leak between engine and muffler. Are all your sensors still installed.on the cats?
Hey Lowpue. They were your maxflos. And, just to clarify, I do believe it has everything to do with my setup and I am not blaming you as the seller. You went above and beyond and I would buy from you again. Everything else on the car is stock. I was thinking about changing the cats next, but I am looking for a lower cost option as the moment. I didn't have a leak before, but I think I will look over the winter for any possible leaks. Perhaps I will get a video and post it this weekend so everyone can have a listen. 911s can sound very "airy" (probably not the best adjective), so I am not sure it is has a leak or just sounds like that with full mufflers installed.
Yeah....I would check out why you have a sound issue. Really curious...post a video when you get a chance. Plus, I would love to hear a comparison with fister. As you know I have gone with totally custom system....really like it but maybe a tad loud....
Here is link to a video when I had the fister mod. Hopefully it works.. it is the only video I have and it is on Instagram...

Interesting...I had no drone with Maxflos but I did have drone with the FS super cups that I had prior. So it definitely something to the fact that I had 200 Cell cats and EVOMS intake.....Drone is a funny thing for sure. My son is saving up for a 996 so once he buys one it may be worth just trying fister.
Fister mod sounds great inside and out. No drone. When cruising on the highway you can barely hear it, but it comes alive when you get on the gas. I always get positive comments on the sound at AX...

Have to agree with Twitchett on Maxiflows. I bought a used pair on Ebay took off my Fisters and repalced them with the Maxiflows, not only did they not sound as good but not long after I installed them one began to rattle and during a track event one began to whistle which startled me so much I pulled off the track right away thinking I had a major mechanical failure.
I'll be putting my Fister mods back on soon
I've come to the conclusion (after many youtube videos) that Fisters are what I want for my car. Sending my cans out in a couple weeks.
Still debating on whether some Fabspeed headers and a X-pipe will find their way on the car down the road however.
I took a video of the car with small rev, 4k rev, hold at 3k followed by a rev to 5k. In contrast to my Instagram video above, I need to get back to my modded cans. Does it sound like the maxflos are in fine working order?

So the reason I went with Maxflos vs Fister was because of weight....I guess no one cars about weight. My custom Dundon setup is even lighter in the rear.
I also pursued maxflos since they were quite a bit lighter than stock. Plus, used maxflos can be a great deal on the used market. What did you think of the sound versus my previous modded setup?
Sorry, but videos are a nearly worthless way of determining a good sound from an exhaust system. You can surely hear something you dont like and reject it, but between the unknown quality of the recording and the variable quality of the output on your smarphone or laptop or desktop, you cant tell what it is really going to sound like.
The internet isnt a replacement for driving. If it was, none of you would drive the cars, youd just read internet reviews and watch videos and claim who has a better car.
Listen to the firsthand experience of people who have invested in various exhaust solutions. Balance and weigh them based on your experience. Like many before you, you might have to spend some money to actually tell the differences.
Videos with audio are only a little useful.
I'll throw in and recommend fister if your primarily looking for a great sound. Darin was great to work with, and I've love the sound of the mufflers. Here's a short startup vid of mine:

Well, I tried posting two video URLs. They appear fine for me and then when I click save they disappear.
Let's try bitly -

OP, I know those Maxflos very well and they have potential with freeing up the system upstream. We are in the midst of creating our 996 high flow cats and headers, they should pair well with the Maxflos. If you still don't like it and want more sound, I actually gundo hacked a good buddy of mine's maxflos. If necessary I'll connect you with him and you can get some direct feddback on the change and I can guide you down that route.
As someone with Maxflos...this is something I've been thinking about for a while, but couldn't find a video or thread where anyone else has tried this! If you could share a video, it would be much appreciated!
I'm not sure if the video would be relevant to you as his car was catless at the time, but here is a flyby of the Maxflos I "gundo hacked" for him at a track day together. It was 1 3/4" if I recall.

God almighty those Maxflos are horrible. I will cross them off my list. One thing I don’t understand is that the Fister sounds the nuts. Why have two people on this thread spent money “upgrading” them?
Also as far as I am concerned listening to exhaust systems online is ALOT useful as it’s not likely we will all ever be together to sample our exhausts.
This thread saved me from getting screwed on buying a used set of Maxflos.
Just to confirm, I bought the maxflos because my exhaust developed a horrible rattle and I got these at a very fair price from a trusted member. I loved my old system, so I never considered it an upgrade (other than the weight savings). That being said, I kept my modded cans and I have decided to have them fixed over the winter.
I also agree that listening to them online does help. There are literally video channels dedicated to mic'd up exhausts and it is clear which ones sound good versus bad. Exhaust companies would have a hard time selling any products without videos.
I just wanted to clarify what I mentioned earlier about recordings of audio:
A good recording can reveal that the sound of the mufflers is not to your liking. So recordings can help you weed out bad sounding exhaust systems. But you have no guarantee that the recording isn't hiding something due to a microphone that doesn't cover the entire sound range, or the output of your computer that may not cover the sound range. You may not hear drone in an audio recording that is plain as day when you try it out directly.
So, in summary:
recorded samples are better than no samples.
Samples may reveal exhaust systems that you will certainly not like
Samples may not be accurate enough to ensure that the samples you like in recording will sound good to you in the car, on the road, in your specific situations.
There is no replacement for first hand experience.
I just fitted a Dansk switchable system and at the moment it's in sport mode all the time because I've not fitted the vacuum kit, sounds really good, it's quite an expensive kit but I got it nearly new, the description says Dansk sound/super sound, you can buy a cheaper version and get a fixed sound, you can get Dansk sound which is mild sports or super sound which is louder but mine has a switchable flap in the bypass tube to give both sounds, best noise I've heard I had a cheaper exhaust on before this !
So, after this discussion, I decided to source some clean OEM mufflers and have them modded my a custom performance exhaust shop near me. I went with the Fister style mod and it sounded glorious.. for 4,000km at which point they started to rattle furiously. I do not want to take another chance on OEM mufflers since they are all approaching an age where failure is probably imminent (both my buddies have rattling cans..) and new units are hilariously expensive.
Has anyone done the Fister mod to Maxflos? I am thinking the Maxflos will probably last and could sound really nice with a bypass pipe welded in.
Thanks!
When they start to rattle just have an exhaust shop cut them open and weld the broken part. I developed a rattle in one of my oem mufflers, so I had my exhaust guy fix the rattle and fister style mod both mufflers for $150. I developed a rattle in the other muffler and he fixed it for $75. It's definitely a cheaper alternative and they sound great.
i have an extra set of OEM that rattle....one of the things i would have loved to try but i couldn't find any info it is to git the internals of a stock muffler. from what i heard is this makes it super light and the sound is better than gundo....does anyone have info on how to do this....this could be an alternative....
Couldn't you just cut off the end of the OEM, gut it and weld it back together. I would think that would be an easy job. I had Fabspeed on mine when I bought the car and didn't care fro them, so I'm not familiar with the stock cans. Send em to me, I'll gut it for ya
I have a good welder (miller)

I have the PSE on my C4 cab and absolutely LOVE the sound! I also have a Turbo S and I HATE the sound... wish there was PSE or a gundo hack for the turbo. Too scared to invest money on a Soul and find out I don't like it any better. I find myself driving the C4 more because of the SWEET exhaust note!
interesting....i replaced my cargraphic exhaust with fs supercups then with maxflos. i did not like cargraphics and supercup was wonderful on track but was too loud and had drone with my set up. Maxflos where perfect for a good no drone set up. It's really amazing how different everyone's experience is
The super sound is loud so I don't recommend it for everyone the TUV sound is probably the best for those that want good sound but not too loud.
My ears occasionally have a dull ache after a long spirited drive. Easy to keep them quiet though just stay under 4k and you're good.
I'm just missing the headers which I'll plan to do soon.
So, to revive this thread, I decided not to go with 15-20 year old stock units this time and had my maxflos modded with the Fister-style bypass pipe. I figured since they are newer mufflers they might have a lower risk of failure. We will see...
The sound is definitely different. Deeper at all RPM's than the stock units. I think they sound better at idle, just as good at wide open throttle, but slightly less exciting when performing an aggressive downshift. It lacks the banshee characteristic my OEM Fisters had on the blip. Also, if anyone is interested in modding their Maxflos, they apparently required a little more welding work to direct the air through the bypass more effectively. In my opinion, I have yet to find anything that sounds as good as the factory PSE on my buddy's car.. but at least I have the weight saving I guess.
With all this talk about seeing the setups IRL, anyone have a car with Tubi exhausts? If the car is still in the garage when i come back from school I am interested in getting a pair.
Mufflers alone will not give you the proper sound in my experience. You need to modify both intake and exhaust to get the best results. The same goes for performance gains.
I experimented with different setups and ended up spending a lot of money. In this process of experimentation, I tried bypass pipes, KN filter and cat-less options. Did not like the results. Too much drone over 4K RPM. However, not everyone is the same. The guy who bought my bypass pipes loves them.
I am very happy with my current setup: FVD Brombacher Sport muffler "Sound version", FVD 200 Cell catalytic converter, BMC filter with the stock box, IPD plenum with GT3 Throttle body.
Sound is similar to a race car with an air cooled engine.
I have seen some video with cars using lot less mods and sounding pretty good.
There is not an easy answer and everyone is different.
However, everyone who has heard my car is very impressed with its sound.
I currently run BBE Headers, IPD Plenum, ported gt3 tb, 3.8 intake, the maxflos, along with a tune. I cannot mess with the cats due to living in CA.
The maxflos, even with this set up, still leaves more to be desired.
What exhaust components are you running? Sounds very nice.
I have a feeling that my sound was being affected by what ended up being an engine approaching failure. Sometimes it would come back from the shop running and sounding like a beautiful flat 6 symphony. Once the hot starts issues and poor idle crept back, the car just didn't sound the same. Maybe it was all in my head... either way we will see how it sounds after my rebuild. Right now I have Fister modded Maxflos.
FVD Brombacher Sport exhaust Sound Version
FVD 200 Cell sport catalytic converter.
FVD Race tune
BMC Flat filter
IPD Competition Plenum with GT3 Throttle body (82mm) and straight hose.
I don't be believe that it has anything to do with your engine failure. Every exhaust's note varies with the engine temperature and RPM. Plus there are other factors in play such as surrounding in which the vehicle is driven.
Mine typically sounds better at the cold start and when car hasn't been run for several days and generally in cold weather.
I guess air combustion is better in lower temperatures which improves the performance as well.
I have two of these cars and they have completely different setups.
They sound totally different. The one you heard has the above setup.
My other 996 has PSE hack which is a welded on bypass pipe added to the muffler (similar to fister) with EVOMS cold intake, IPD plenum and GIAC tune. Sound is different and more similar to Fister or Gundo hacks.
Ive got a (almost new, 1yr., 5k miles) set of Sgency Power mufflers; and also a set of Fabspeed exhaust tips (could provide separate), if interested. Sound clips available...aggressive under 3k rpm and under load, above, nice and quiet, no drone.
